Title: (Really Crappy) Pics of Subaru Red Rocks Meet...56k go pound sand!
Post by: S204STi on March 25, 2007, 03:12:22 PM
So this sunday the 25th there was a big Subaru meet down at Red Rocks park, which is SW of Denver.? I forgot our digital, but my phone has a grainer cam built in.? Here are the pics, try to hide your disdain for my photography.

Overall, there were 225 cars in the morning before I left at noon.? I figure that was the high point of the event.

Funny sticker found on a Cobalt SS.? Owner seemed kinda arrogant though, like he wanted to stand out in a crowd of Scoobs.

I have some more I may post up if I get some motivation,? have to text my email address one at a time...

Nice.  And red really looks good on the hawkeye WRXs.  I post a pic I've posted many times before:

I had it as my sig for a while, when I was sure that I was getting a WRX.

I like that red one raza, slick looking car. The prancing moose is hilarious, I want one for my girlfriends Sentra. The cobalt sticker is funny, but it comes off a little arrogant also.

This car's owner is on RS25.com.  I've seen it before.  And you've just confirmed why I'm finally going to join a Subaru club.  That looks really cool.

Did you see any H6 swaps in any of the Imprezas?  This looks like a huge meet.  Is it a NASIOC meet?

This is making me want to get home and drive my car even more now.  Damn college!

It was organized by awdpirates.net, which as far as I can tell was a spinoff of NASIOC much like CarSPIN is a spinoff of C/D.  However I read about it in the Rocky Mountain Impreza Club  forum on NASIOC.

No, there were no H6 swaps but I did see two SVXs and there was even a very rare RX with an EJ25 swap, and one of the lifted GLs also had an EJ22 swap.

BTW, I finally worked up the courage for a full-throttle launch (we're talking redline + slip left foot off the pedel suddenly).

The results are amazing.  First off, you don't just chirp all four tires, you HOWL them for a full second before that thing takes off.  Because the rev limit is actually just past redline I hit 60 just as I was coming out of second gear.  Didn't bother timing it, but it was pretty quick.  Wife was impressed at least!

Oh, and no I don't plan to make a habit of it, just wanted to get it out of my system.

If you didn't live so far away, I think it would be fun to go rally crossing at some point.  There's no sense in having a car like that to keep it clean.

You live in western PA right?  I lived in Blairsville for 6months when I went to WyoTech.  Complete dump.  But there are some fun roads around there.

That's probably why he underestimated his 0-60 time by a full second. That does say "under 5.1 seconds", not "6.1", right? The photograph isn't high-res but that font looks like a "5". Stupid sticker though, you'd think he was driving a 600 Lambo or something. "Warning" indeed. It's the redneck variant of the ricer.

The SC'ed Cobalts are quick though; my Mustang is a lot faster but I sometimes drink with a guy who owns an RX-8 and he was surprised by one he couldn't shake all the way to 110 mph. He started to pull away after that, which leads me to think it must take a looong time for the Cobalt to hit 140+.

Until you hit 3rd gear then it's bye bye WRX! (stock for stock at least, I'm sure there were several dozen modded WRX at that meet.  Seems like a big tuning base)

I would imagine that some of the cars at an event like that could hand a new Z06 its ass until about 120 mph.  Some of those cars are insane.

I noticed though that some of the heavily modified ones don't run very smoothly at idle, and they are raucously loud in an irritating way.  Seems that there are a lot of Scoobiphiles who think the rorty fart-cans work.  I prefer the smoother-sounding Prodrive and Borla stuff, because it lets out the low, rumbly boxer sound without the high-pitch noises some other cans let out.

Not really remotely related (well, remotely, 'cause it's Subies!), but I was home this weekend (got to see my car for the first time in a week an a half!- cant drive it tohuhg :( ) and my grandma parked her '05 Forester right next to it.  Popping both hoods, it's funny how similar the motors look, even 12 years apart!

I really like the steering wheels and center stack of new subies, btw.

Two things about that:

First, your g-ma has an EJ253, IIRC in her Forester.  You have an EJ22E.  I thought hers was a DOHC engine, but Wikipedia is saying differently.  Yours is a SOHC, but believe it or not, most of the displacement differences in a Subaru engine can be attributed to the piston heads and the length of the rods.  Other than that, the bore on most of the cylinders are very similar from EJ18 all the way up to EJ25.  When I get back, I'll show you what I mean when I get to rip apart the old engine, but the block on every car from 1989 until now except for the Loyale, Justy, XT (using the old EA82 engine), and H6 models is very similar.

What does this mean to you?  Probably nothing...or you can steal the heads with the camshafts from your grandma's Forester, put them on your car, and boom, you suddenly have a far better breathing car.  That would be a little mean to give your grandma your old SOHC cams, but it really can be done from what I've read and researched.

Second thing, a wise man once said that Subarus are like legos--you can pretty much pick and choose what you want from newer cars and put them on older ones and it will work.  From what I understand, that includes dashboards.  ;)

On that note of corruption, I can't wait until I can go to something like that.  I was afraid that everyone in our local Subaru club would have WRXs, STis, and SVXs, but it looks like everyone has a little bit of everything at these events.  That would make me feel more comfortable showing up to something like that.  Thanks Roy!

Hehe oooooh that'd be a cruel trick to play on a 70-something year old lady.  She just got the car three days ago!  (traded in -03 and '01 Foresters for this one, actually).  Not a bad idea though...

Side benefit of me not being able to drive my car:  dad couldn't stand pulling up with an exhaust that sounded like an angry lawnmower, so he patched some of the holes in it

I've chucked a Camry into a hard corner and I've done the same with my car and its stock suspension (it's crap, trust me).  With the Camry (a 1995), it felt like the thing was going to flip.  It understeered and dived so much that I thought the front bumper was going to dig into the pavement.

My car, OTOH, was decent and chuckable.  It still rolled more than a dead Wimmer in his grave finding out that his grand children bought Camries would, but it felt so controllable.  On that note, and noting that both the WRX and new Camry are far better cars than my own at this point, I would say that if you put the WRX and the Camry on, say, Leguna Seca, the Camry would get murdered.  I've never been a fan of brutal acceleration over crisp handling, but I think that the Camry and WRX are far different cars, and the WRX would make for a much moren enjoyable experience when the roads got twisty.

Interesting, I didn't realize that the Cobalt was so underrated.

Also not surprised that the V6 camry is that fast, if they're anything like the Maxima/Altima they would certainly give a WRX a run for its money.

My bad then.
That's really good.

I lose 28hp through drivetrain losses, and 0.8 lbs/ft of torque.  Not to be a dyno-junky, just saying.

Like 565 said, cars are beginning to catch up to the WRX.  Just 6 years ago nothing built for less than 35,000 could keep up with it, now there are quite a few that will.

That's why next week will be a great week, indeed, as the more powerful WRX will be making its permiere.

But it's not all about straightline speed. Chuck one of those in a corner and you'll go understeering off the road whereas the WRX will do a four wheel drift true to its rally roots. :praise:

Sorry my friend, but...

That's alot of torque.

Here is an SS dyno for comparision, more HP, but less torque.

That's it, I'm joining the Subaru Club back home.  I've been contemplating it for about a year now, and I'm finally going to do it.  Thanks.

Personally, I couldn't stand the Ion, but I'd take a supercharged Cobalt... as long as I didn't have to pay for it.  :P

Not with 200 supercharged horsepower...I put that much down at the wheels.
WRX's are notoriously slow on the highway.  Just look at your quarter mile times and traps.

*edit* excellent someone posted the numbers for me! thanks 565

The 06's larger engine largely does away with that.? My top-gear acceleration on the freeway is great, and if I really need to scoot a simple downshift will put me in go-straight-to-jail category in a hurry.? Maybe it is a matter of contrasts, because I am coming from a 130hp car...

No doubts it is an improvement, but it still won't keep up with the cobalt on the highway.  As mentioned earlier the quarter mile numbers prove that.  565 posted 2007 figures for both cars, taken from C&D.

Quarter miles times measure standing starts, not acceleration at cruising speed where gearing and available torque play more of a role.  A 50-70mph time would be a better reflection of highway acceleration.

But check out the trap speed and how the Cobalt is quicker to speeds above 100mph.

Still a measurement from a standstill, not at cruising.  Personally i don't do a lot of stop and go on the freeway, (of course I also don't live in california lol).

Lookit, I'm not trying to sound like a fanboy, I am just saying that magazine racing doesn't give you the big picture.  I could give a sweet jesus how quick a cobalt SS is to 100mph, that's just not relevant to me, and I don't think it's the best measure of real world driving.  that's why some car mags have introduced the 30-50 etc top gear accel tests.

That doesn't matter.  If you look at the trap speeds in conjunction with the time, you notice the WRX is fast initially then loses all steam most likely post 60mph.  While the Cobalt has a hard time getting going but when it hooks up it screams.  You would still lose the 50-70 race because traction at that point is not an issue for the cobalt, which is why the WRX is faster in the slower speeds (duh)  :)

I know you don't care how fast the cobalt is to 100, but it notes that it is also fast from 50-70 where traction is not an issue.

The top gear acceleration tests to me were odd considering how many cars have different ratios and all.  Or you can't even perform the test in an automatic.

I guess I am trying to say that comparing the Cobalt SS to the WRX and then saying that the WRX is "slow" on the highway is a bit absurd because anyone who wants meaningful acceleration can have it in any car with a downshift.

I'm going to update that thread (in "the garage") once it stops raining (on our 5th day straight of rain, forcast puts us at this coming Thursday for our first peak at the sun, which will be like 9 days straight :( ).  So far my traction is better with the suspension and summer tires in the rain, than with snow tires on dry!  I REALLY need to push it hard in second gear to lose traction straight-line, which is pretty amazing in wet.  I can't wait for dry....  :D

pics will be coming once I can get outside also!

Cool, it must have stiffer rear springs to keep that weight on the front.  :ohyeah:
