TIL that the manual ND's don't have overdrive gears. 6th gear is 1:1, it just has a 2.866 rear end gear.

The automatic ratios are much more "normal"

I mentioned I would love a 6spd manual because buzzing at 4k RPMs at 80mph in 5th gets kinda old. Someone said the 6spd top gear is actually lower than the 5spd. (At least on the NB).

This is true. But the NB with 6 speed has a lower rear end ratio so top gear should still have better highway rpms. Also have taller stock tires which lowers highway rpm

You just need to install an aftermarket overdrive unit.

Taller rear end, but shorter top gear.

.814 x 4.1 is 3.337
.843 x 3.909 is 3.295

That's only 1% taller.

Looking at the taller NB final drive, it's 3.065.  That's about 9% taller.

The tire circumferences are all very close to the same, within 3%.  No big gain there.  If you're running 4k at highway speed in the NB8A, the NB8B will turn about 3600.  And the NB8A 10AE would only be running about 40 RPM less in 6th than the NB8A in 5th.

Very seldom does the change from 5 speed to 6 speed result in an extra, taller ratio tacked onto the 5 spd.  Normally top gear is kept about the same, the the lower gears are adjusted and made closer together.

It was warm and clear last night. Popped the top, played some music, and went comet hunting. Then Nick Drake made me feel all weepy.

The difference between models is so insane. Don't realize it when you just see cars on the road.

But then I'd love to see a real-life F150 from now and 10/20 years ago next to each other. (too lazy to google size specs and images)

I did the comparison.  For regular cab, short bed, the F150 is up about 6" in length, an inch or so in height (3 inches for 2WD), and less than half an in inch width.  Not reported is the height of the hood and bed sides has gone up quite a bit since 2000.

The width is pretty much limited for legality purposes at less than 80" and has been for decades.
Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

Half ton pickup suspension designs have also improved a bunch since that '56 Ford, which was really crude. Actually, since about '67, pickups have become more and more carlike.
Still like the old ones, though.  :ohyeah:

Yeah, no doubt a taller bigger vehicle now is safer and handles better than older smaller ones.

But we saw an old early 90s 2 door Ranger standard cab yesterday on regular stock little wheels. Looked so tiny!

Driving an old Ranger in modern traffic feels like driving a golf cart.
