Title: Windshield Ding
Post by: TurboDan on June 28, 2005, 03:05:32 PM
My father mentioned to me today that he got a nice ding in his windshield on the way home from work yesterday.  He asked me to see what tips anyone might have for what to do about it - at least so it doesn't get worse, if not to fix it aesthetically.

Thanks!

I dont see what you could do to make it get better per se, so I dont think you really can do anything short of replacing the windshield.  How bad is this ding?

Nailpolish for now, then bring it to a shop ASAP.
Nailpolish stops the crack from going across the whole windsheild, and a shop can apply epoxy with this sort of vacuum thing that gets into the cracks and dries, making the crack invisible and the windsheild stronger.
Insurance companies often have programs where the deductable for glass repair is less than your normal deductible, sometimes even free. I'd look into that also.

It can be repaired with an epoxy. We fixed a ding on my brother's Jetta that way.

I got about a 3/4" bullseye ding in my windshield a little over a year ago.  Glass company came to the house and drilled it and filled it with epoxy.  It's 80% invisible, and completely stopped expanding.  Worked great.  The guy even said a lot of the dings will be 100% invisible - it helps a lot if you fix it right away.  The more you wait, the worse the repair - I guess micro dust and dirt work their way in and don't let the epoxy stick in the fine cracks as well.  Call any glass company - I'm sure they offer the service.

Hmm the ding in our trucks widow is from top to bottom now, dead center, started as a chip and expanded in two days.

Fix that ding now footoflead.  SargeMonkey, you're screwed!  Unless you live in a no-fault glass coverage state like Mass., it's worth the $40 to save $400.  I used to live in Mass and got used to swapping windshields whenever a ding appeared - no fault, no cost, no downside.  Once I moved to NH, the insurance company porked me on rates because I had 3 windshield replacements in Mass in the previous few years, so it counted against me when they looked at my insurance loss runs.

Steenking Bastages!

Well seeing as its 33 year old glass, and the cracks stoped, we will let it stay where it is.

Update...  He called his insurance company and they actually came right out to his office's parking lot and fixed it for free.
