Title: Crack-pipe ads.
Post by: Payman on January 04, 2013, 05:45:22 PM
Really? $10,000 for an '85 Monte Carlo with 268,000 kms?

Post your "what are you smoking" car ads here!

Not quite as wacky as yours, and less miles, but I don't see a lot of people beating down the door for this one...

That Monte Carlo looks pretty damned good for 268,000 km. Although it is said that it has "never seen winter".

Maybe the guy added an extra zero; 26,800 km?

If there isn't some sort of crack involved in this truck at some stage, I'd be surprised.

268000 km doesn't seem unreasonable.  That works out to just under 10K km per year (~6200 miles), which is about right for a vehicle driven daily for roughly half the year.

Well, at least he did something with it. I did not bother posting a few ads for some early 80's Chevy half tons I found a province over that people were asking 9k-12k for that were just either being used as hunting trucks or had low mileage.

I'm curious if the seller is the one who did all of the mods or if it was a previous owner.  Seems like somebody put a lot of money in tacky accessories on that car only to sell because they wanted something with a stick-shift.

Well, according to the ad, "everything is in good conditional".  And "emission test pass guaranty!"  You can't beat that!

It says to call or text "if interesting" but I'm just not "interesting" enough to call.  But at least it's in good conditional.

That's been my experience when looking at used cars. Some even keep all of their maintenance paperwork, and it's astounding how long some of them go between oil changes.

Yeah, low miles but that means little in this case. Mis-matched paint, unoriginal top, undesirable year and colour. I wouldn't pay more than $15,000.

$10-15,000 is about where these are selling right now though: a great example might bring $20k. This is not as good as that though. Its also not badly thougth of as far as the year goes. '76 was the last convertible for a long time from Cadillac. It was also Boss Hogg's caddy, so there's that too.

A co-worker is looking for a beater/autox car and will periodically tell me about some of the cars he's checked out as candidates.  He found an early 90s Civic hatch with ~200K miles on it for sale.  Some body damage.  Driver's seat belt latch non-functional.  The owner had apparently dropped the ECU from a VTEC-equipped Integra into the car (which was running the non-VTEC 1.6L), and as a result the CEL was on and it didn't run right.  During the test drive, he noted a loud grinding sound which was likely one or more wheel bearings in need of replacement.  IIRC, the owner was asking $1500 for it.  Of course, around here people think that anything that can move under its own power is worth at least a grand.

Browsing the local craigslist, I found a 20 year old Del Sol with 150K miles on it with an asking price of $4500. (Blue book value for a flawless car is like $1600).

D:

You'd think the seller would have the common sense to unbury the car from the mound of shit on top of it before taking pictures and trying to sell the thing.

$3,500 for a Toyota Crown like that probably isn't out of line but being that we've all seen how it was stored its valued has immediately plummeted. I'd offer the guy a $1500 tops if I was interested, simply because of the pictures.

And it was built by a master horologist!  I didn't recognize the word, so I google searched it.  That's a master watch maker.  What that has to do with cars, I'm not quite sure.

And it only makes 260 hp!  Why would you go to all that effort for a pretty mediocre result?  4 speed auto, open diff, sub 300 hp?  Tacky V8 badges all over the thing.  Stock tire width and differential?

This might be the worst deal of all time.

Yes, but those are illegal street cars, heavy, hard to smog test, are too powerful for the stock chassis without major modifications, and they lacked the refinement the Lexus drivetrain offers, don't you know?

Why would a watchmaker have anything to do with cars?  Sure, movements are like engines, but they're not actually engines.

Maybe he meant horticulturalist?  But that doesn't make sense either.

I would pay $20k for it if it had an R154 5 speed swap, an LSD, wide tires to actually handle the horsepower, and suspension/chassis work (coilovers, braces, etc). Putting a V8 into a Miata and leaving everything else stock though is just retarded.

Guys building Monster Miatas were dropping late 80s/early 90s Ford 302s in which were originally only rated at 205-225 hp.

There's no reason not to go the LS route with the level of sophistication and research behind the kits and builds that everyone's done over the years. You can DIY an LS V8 Miata for around $13k (less if you do shitty hacky stuff, but again there's no reason to with the specialized pieces out there now).

Supposedly, only twenty of these travesties were built before the tooling was destroyed.  Pity they didn't destroy the tooling before ANY were built!

I had a boss once that would throw me a CAD drawing that was the equivalent of a freehand drawing on a napkin and tell everyone that the design was 90% complete. Some people are completely delusional.

There might be some truth if he said that the frame and suspension are 75% complete, but the project is more like 25% complete.
