Title: I know I'm crazy but am I off with this?
Post by: 12,000 RPM on December 27, 2016, 11:20:10 AM
I'm googling "lowered TLX" and I come across this

Am I nuts for seeing some of this?

When I saw that photo of the slammed TLX I thought someone had taken a new Alfa Romeo Giulia and slapped the Acura beak on it.

Here's a Giulia I saw recently. Underwhelming in this color and base trim. It needs to be red and have the sport package!

The C pillar is what ties it together for me

Non Quadrofoglio Giulias look like Acuras

Part of it is the angle the photos were taken from.  In a true profile, they don't look as much alike.

That TSX photo is shot too low.

The Giulia has a lot smaller of front overhang....for obvious reasons.

It's labeled as the "Performance Luxury Sedan" on Acura's website, doesn't sound that different from what the TL/TSX were?

I think their reputation is fair.  Acura made 85% of a great car and decided that was enough.

It's an Accord for people who want a little more. I think that in and of itself makes it worth checking out... I was impressed by the Accord

It's a little posher than the Accord for sure, but more cushy luxury than sporty luxury. Not like a Lexus ES, but not like even a TL.

Is the TLX the same size as the Accord? The look smaller in person, but maybe it is just the style that makes it look that way.

It's the exact same size as the Accord.  They took the TL, which was slightly larger than the Accord, and the TSX, which was slightly smaller, and merged them into a single model that is the exact same size as the Accord.

I will say that the TLX is the first aesthetically attractive Acura since the 1st TSX and 3rd TL.

It looks good, but it's way too close to the Accord and the marketing is confusing.  Acura tries to market it as sporty and exciting but it really isn't.  Again, it's 85% of a great car.

IMO, if you're looking at a FWD TLX, you may as well get a loaded Accord.  Same chassis and engines, but the Accord at least benefits from an available 6MT, which gives it a slight edge in "sport" credibility.  The AWD-SH version of the TLX is the only one that can legitimately distinguish itself from the Accord.

You can't rationalize luxury cars over mainstream ones, ever. That's kind of the point

Plus I waffle a lot but I'm seriously considering getting an automatic car next go round. In that context the TLX stomps the Accord Sport with the 2.4. That DCT is German fast. Plus it just looks better in and out than an Accord. It's like getting a 6GC over a regular 5 series.

Depends on the car.  I have trouble springing for "premium" models that are just dressed-up versions of mainstream cars, especially when the mainstream model offers a lot of luxury content on the option sheet.

And didn't you say that the Accord is way too huge and you'd never want a car that big?

Thus making room for the Civic-sized ILX, which will be a great TSX replacement once they base it on the current Civic.

MX793 the Accord is growing on me. Chassis is really good, fits in my garage, relaxing to drive, looks good lowered. And yea, rear facing infant seat is key.

As an owner of the current Civic and having extensive seat time in the new Civic, this statement is so true it hurts.  The current Civic is a better "luxury" car than the current ILX.

The Accord looks as good as the TLX in top trim but in cheapo base trim? Nah.

And the new Civic ranges from mildly offensive to "why did you buy that" hideous. ILX won't light the world on fire but it's not ugly. Next one should be really nice though.

It looks better in all trims, but point being you can get an EX-L V6 for less than the base MSRP on a TLX, and you can get the 4 cylinder with loaded interiors for waaaaay less than the TLX. I think the sweet spot is the Sport SE: manual, 10-way adjustable heated leather seats, 19" alloys, dual climate, etc..., and all for 25K.

QuoteAnd the new Civic ranges from mildly offensive to "why did you buy that" hideous. ILX won't light the world on fire but it's not ugly. Next one should be really nice though.

No offense man but your Civic isn't anything remotely special in the looks department. I'd go as far as calling it just as ugly if not more so than the new one. It is, however, better looking than the ILX with its terrible schnoz, and I wouldn't hold out much hope for Acura's styling treatment on the new one either.

Looks wise.... everyone has their right to an opinion I guess. And a 4 banger Accord equipped like a TLX is only gonna be like $2-3K less. For me, the better looks, slicker automatic transmission, 4 wheel steering and LED headlights are definitely worth that premium. I get that shit like that doesn't matter to most people and for a wide range of people the Accord is the better buy, but that shit does matter to some people.

Again, everyone has their right to an opinion. But I think an objective case for the current Civic hatchback being the ugliest Civic ever made could be convincingly argued. There are a lot of weird details and off proportions on it.

Ehhhh........ Acura and 9th gen Civic aside, Honda still makes drivers' cars in mainstream segments with little to no sacrifice. Current Fit/Civic/Accord have great chassis tuning and segment competitive performance. Odyssey is a minivan that's fun to drive. We're well past the days of the likes of the S2000 and Integra Type R, but most of the regular offerings are as good as ever IMO.

QuoteThat left us with the Odyssey, which does not drive like a van. On the road, it's like a bulked-up Accord, and with the way I send it juking and jiving through parking lots, you'd think I was piloting a CRX. It's an impeccably balanced machine, not just given its broad range of capabilities but, yes, especially given its capabilities.

Celebrating a minivan that's "the best to drive" is like happily proclaiming your contraction of Syphilis; "the best STD to have".
It's like going to a hooker for a hug!

Won't lie, I had to drive a 2004 Odyssey around for a lil bit last year and it really wasn't bad. Thing was also quicker than I expected it to be (and I like the sound the Honda J series makes).

You know, I thought long and hard about a V6 TLX with SH-AWD for a short time, until I saw this:

http://www.consumerreports.org/car-reliability/the-most-and-least-reliable-cars-by-class/ (http://www.consumerreports.org/car-reliability/the-most-and-least-reliable-cars-by-class/)

and then this:

http://www.truedelta.com/Acura-TLX/reliability-1286 (http://www.truedelta.com/Acura-TLX/reliability-1286)

Finishing last place in reliability against the likes of the C-class, 3-series, A4, and ATS is quite a dubious "accomplishment". Apparently the main culprit here is the pointlessly complicated transmission.

I question how many of the issues are QC complaints versus actual reliability issues.  Fiesta and Focus had issues with the PowerShift DSG automatic gearbox, and that is likely why they are on the shit list.

I spend a fair bit of time on the Mustang boards and can't say I've noticed any significant trends of poor reliability.  A lot of complaints for cosmetic QC issues, though.  Poor panel alignment (trunk and hood) seems to be the biggest complaint, particularly on 2015s.  Brake squeal (particularly on PP cars) is another big one.  Rattles from the headlight switch (2015s) and clunks from the driveline (irritating but normal for the gearbox used, previous generation was the same).  Also complaints about the leather being easy to stretch or tear.  None of these affect reliability.

Yep, looking at the reliability breakdown I'm seeing mostly green, with the only reds being the transmission (probably stemming from knee jerk reactions to the ZF9, and which improved for 2016) and audio controls. Literally everything else is better or much better than average. CR is being a little clickbaity IMO.

I like the large SUV class. The Suburban/Yukon XL came in 2nd and the Expedition came in next to last. I mean are there more than 2 vehicles in that class.

Also, 8 out of 14 classes have a footnote on the leading car that it was based on 1 year of data rather than the standard 3. If 3 is the standard shouldn't the majority of vehicles follow the standard. It looks like a good way to be in first place is to have a new model without much data.

The adoption of LED headlights has pushed us past the event horizon of the full width grill. Next crop of cars will extend the grill to the wheel arches. Fret not though, the cooling aperture will be about 10in2, with the rest reserved for radar

I wonder if the one thing Tesla might actually influence other carmakers to do, in the interest of aerodynamics/fuel efficiency, is to minimize the size of the grille.

We've been moving in the complete opposite direction for the last 15 years or so with the grille outlines becoming bigger and bigger, while actually free area goes down and active shutters and other such measures are being added for the sake of making the cars more aerodynamics. A lot of new cars' faces are full of inactive areas and blank-offs! When do we reach a point where someone—other than Tesla—says "Enough's enough!" and creates something akin to the '86 Ford Taurus?

This Acura grille just doesn't suit the car at all; Toyota/Lexus have gone "full retard". We're never going to see low hoodlines like we had in the '80s ever again, too much hubbub about pedestrian safety, but I wonder what the designers might come up with if someone told them: make me something with no grille.

The Acura grilles need to be large to accommodate the dinner plate sized Acura badges.

Yeah, I don't think I'd mind the grille so much if it wasn't for the yuge, out of proportion badge in the middle.

I don't think the grill works because its very obviously just pasted on this car and nothing else has really changed.  The precision concept that this is taken from looked fantastic, imo, and the updated MDX looks decent.  I expect an Acura designed from the ground up with this language will look pretty decent.

Now, if they can actually make the car more than a fancy Accord is another story.  Acura's model release schedule is so strange that by the time a new product comes out, the next generation Honda product that its based on comes out like a year later and pretty much does the same exact stuff for 5/10k less.  The 10th gen Civic made the ILX pointless and a new Accord is right around the corner.

Yeah I kind of liked the way the Model 3 looked without a grill.

The Model S never had an active grille in the first place, they just created an inactive one because they thought it would look weird without something there. Newer Model Ses made in the last year or so don't have one:
