A while ago I noticed a lot of cars & pickups with various shades of shiny grey paint.  At the time, it seemed like an unusual colour as most grey vehicles were quite pale.  I wasn't really sure if I liked it, but it's grown on me.  The darker greys look better, kind of like wet clay.

I actually swore I would not get a grey car. There are too many of them. But, this was- well it wasn't a deal because that would mean something lower than MSRP- fairly priced because it was a special order that the original buyer backed out of.
I was also pretty sour on buying a new car at all; but when a 2016 4Runner with 198,000 miles is being sold for 34,000 and there are a total of 7 new cars on a lot that usually has 100-150, the market is truly messed up and it changes your position.

Congrats!!!!

We ordered our maverick in dark grey. Didn't want to pay for the extra colors, will be easier to keep clean than white or black or silver... I hope.

I saw a grey Accord and a grey Chrysler 300 in Atlanta yesterday. Very nice, especially the 300. Yes, grey is still monochrome, but It's good that we're moving away from the boring black/white/silver options.

Edit: and another vote here for photos!

Nice, congrats!  I still miss my 4Runner a bit.  Nice car.  Loved how it looked.  Hard to justify when doing the mileage I was doing, but had the pandemic hit while I still owned it, I would have never gotten rid of it I don't think.

I seriously considered the new Bronco, but became more and more disappointed the more I looked. Really ended up deciding that in two years it will be a great vehicle, but right now with normal launch problems compounded by supply chain issues and with ridiculous wait times and/or dealer markups, its a hard pass.

The 4Runner does everything a Bronco would, and with proven reliability.

And it's much quieter, with a real roof and all.

A 4Runner gets you 95% of the off road performance of a Wrangler or Bronco, with much much better on road dynamics.  Seems like a no brainer unless you lived at MOAB or something.

It does 100% of the offroading I am likely to do- which is get to trailheads and occasionally snatch a side by side back to the road- which is also more offroading than 95% of Wrangler owners will ever do.

If I did live near Moab or was interested in hardcore wheeling- I'd never start with a new or stock vehicle to begin with.

Yeah, a newer or stock vehicle is sketchy on actual off road trails. RZRs are where it's at, IMO. The performance per dollar is great and you aren't worried about breaking your daily driver. Old Jeeps might be cheaper but not as capable without a lot of work put into them.

How so?   Grand Cherokee is a out the same size, can tow more and go off-road just as far... While being more comfortable, better handling, and better mpg

Yeah. Sure.

You're the most needlessly and baselessly confrontational person I've ever met. No, I don't trust your motives.

The GC is a unibody SUV that's much more comfort oriented and significantly less capable off road. That's not a bad thing; you'll notice I also own a Durango, which os basically a GV without a 2-speed transfer case. Its a good car. Its not what I wanted.

How is it significantly less capable off-road?  Where will it go that a JGC won't?

Less clearance, and more vulnerable bits exposed on the underneath. Less suspension travel as well. The GCs that go off road are either raised or beaters.

Besides, I didn't want one.

Depending on the option packages... JGC with air suspension has much more ground clearance and you can also get full skid plates and rock rails from factory

JGC is a fragile jacked up car. You have to realign the suspension every time you take it off the pavement. This is a fact.

I cannot imagine a scenario where I would buy another vehicle with air suspension under any circumstances.

And yes, if I got a Trailhawk with all the Mopar dealer add-ons, I'd also be paying $70,000.

But you're missing the point: I still wouldn't want it. If I were to buy a Jeep, I'd buy a Wrangler. Actually, I'd buy a Grand Wagoneer from the AMC era. There is simply nothing about the GC that appeals to me.

Well for the record a Trailhawk isn't needed for underbody skid plates and air suspension, but even a fully loaded Trailhawk MSRP is only ~$50k

So, 1000 miles into it;

I'm not really seeng this "lack of refinement" that's been mentioned. The suspension is well sorted; not harsh on normal roads and very forgiving on heavy washboarded dirt roads. Steering feedback is middle-of-the-road, but honestly better than I expected from a vehicle like this. The big thing eveybody mentions about these is that its perhaps the last 5-speed automatic being sold. I'm sure this is a part of why its mileage numbers are on the low side (plus the lack of stop/start which is actually a godsend), but as far as driving and throttle response goes, there is no reason to complain. The upside is that when choosing gears manually, things make much more sense, and you don't have to tip through 4 gears to feel a difference.

The interior is perfectly comfortable; the seats are some of the best I've sat in. No, it not leather; its some sort of leather textured plastic feeling synthetic with a silly name, but sturdy and breathable. The interior surfaces are likewise non-luxurious, but well put together. If refinement means leather covered instrument panels and fake wood, I'm not missing much. The only thing I miss is automatic climate control.

The first low-level off road experience went just fine- some deeply rutted muddy two-track on the way to a campsite. It probably could have been done, with some effort, in 2WD; but I used the opportunity to play with the multi-terrain system and take the hard line when I didn't need to; all worked well without incident.

I loved the polyurethane seat material that I had in my 4Runner.  The Japanese polyurethane stuff is better than a lot of automotive grade leather IMO.  Much more durable, but also softer.

I love how they call fake leather in some of the luxury nameplates -> vegan leather.  You got vegan leather in your 4Runner man.

I think the GX460 and the 4Runner is basically the same thing, the biggest difference is probably the V8 instead of the V6  engine.  The GX definitely needs a big more clearance due to the unneeded "looks" items though..

99% sure it's made by Kyowa.  Their polyurethanes are next level compared to everyone else.  I remember when I first got my hands on it back in like 2010 when I worked in interiors, I knew it was going to explode.  Way better than anything the Germans were using, and light years ahead of any TPO or PVC based material.  They do some cool processes with different backings on it too.  It was really, really pricey for being a synthetic, but still much cheaper than real leather.  And none of the patterning around defect kind of issues you get with real leather.

But does it smell like leather?

Major problem. Probably a deal breaker.

The cupholder in the center console is an odd size- doesn't fit any of my coffee cups perfectly. There's a removable rubber liner for for smaller cups, so it really has two sizes.

The small size is slightly too small for everything and the big size is too big. Then; I found a coffee cup that fits perfectly! Great success! Fits perfectly in the cupholder with the rubber liner in.

Except now, I take the cup out and the liner comes with it! My disappointment is immeasurable.

all cupholders in the northeast U.S. should be sized with reference to Dunkin beverage cups. Small, medium, and large designated spots.  My wife always gets a medium coffee from Dunkin when all she drinks is a small amount because the small cup doesn't fit right.

You have a 3D printer. Take some measurements, model some cylinders, and get printing.

My XJ has two different sized cupholders in the center console, and one has a handle cut out. It fits everything.

That was my first thought- but it might be best to leave it removable for cleaning. I'm making one with a slightly larger ID on the printer; it'll have to be a prototype because all I have is blue PLA. If it works well, I'll get some in smoke grey.

Coat the bottom of your cup in a silicone based lubricant.

I had this same problem.  I carried the rubber liner into the house and sat my coffee mug next to the sink with the liner stuck on all the time.

If this complaint was on a Tesla group, people would be up in arms calling Soup a heathen and how dare he challenge Elon Musk's genius in designing the cup holder to perfection, and it's the fault of the cup, not the cup holder that failed to conform to the cup holder's shape..

I feel like those rubber inserts get lost and found again over the years. I have one with the insert in, and one out, and find that fits most cups fine. The rubber insert will fit most store bought coffees, no insert fits the insulated mug I use the most.

I'm hoping that the upcoming 6th gen will have a significantly improved interior. I've been ready to replace my 2010 for like 5 years.

I know one has been in the works for awhile.  Any idea if it's on the same platform at the Land Cruiser and new Tundra?  If it's just a shrunk down Tundra platform, with the same twin turbo V6 + hybrid and 10-speed auto, that'll be great.

My understanding is it's on the same platform, though most doubt that it'll get the same engine.  That said, with the land cruiser discontinued in NA as a Toyota, that gives them some room to move the 4Runner upmarket a bit IMO.

Isn't Sequoia the more Land Cruiser/LX North America equivalent for Toyota whereas the 4Runner is the Land Cruiser Prado/GX NA equivalent?  It wouldn't make a lot of sense since the GX and 4Runner are already close enough in price, to make it more expensive would cannibalize each other's sales.

The LX was the Land Cruiser Amazon, and the GX is the Land Cruiser Prado. The Sequoia is NA only and is based on the Tundra pickup platform; less expensive but larger than the Land Cruiser.

The big difference is the Sequoia is a much better tow vehicle.

Yeah, but i mean they basically fit in the same category more or less.  Sequoia is definitely more "Merican"..

Definitely- As far as I know only sold in NA, and for the most part, well adapted to what buyers said they wanted in a large SUV.

The Sequoia is a different market I think, more akin to a Suburban ... more passenger space and towing etc.  The third row in both the 4runner and LC is more for occasional use (my 4runner has no third row, and I wouldn't want one in an SUV in this size range).

As for cannibalizing the GX, I think there's a subset of people who want the Lexus/luxury badge, and aren't going to buy a mainstreamer brand.  GX is ancient, too.

The third row in the LC was as usable as any other 3rd row seat I've seen in anything smaller than a Suburban. 4Runner 3rd rows are. damned tight. (Mine does not have one)

Interesting, I haven't sat in one but for some reason thought it was tight. My main beef with the LC third row is the way they fold up to the side, and are not (easily) removable.

They're easy enough to remove; but folded up they never stayed "tight." The tie-down straps they came with were hokey.

Makes me wonder how tight the 3rd row in older RAV4s was.  They aren't large vehicles.  Mine has a nice covered storage well where the 3rd row would have been if so equipped.
