***Ultra rare 500E 6.0 AMG at the S-Class of Bavaria Club meet***

Attended the S-Class of Bavaria Club again. The guys here are all MB nuts and also arrive in non-S-Class MBs.

They had a professional team there to quote the value of the member cars. And one of the members showed up with this! I knew it was a 500E but he corrected me and said it's a 500E 6.0 AMG - one of the few 500Es taken by AMG and bored out to 6 liters. It's the same engine found in my dad's 1989 500SL. The AMG records are sketchy and it is assumed that only 25 to 50 of these 500E 6.0 AMGs were made - this is one of them. Damn!  :mrcool:

One of my favorites from the meet - and the car is for sale. This is an early-model 500SEL with ALL OPTIONS including the rare hydropneumatic suspension option. I absolutely love the color and the green velour interior. Velour needs to make a comeback! That's my dad's '89 500SL next to it.

Sitting behind the wheel of a 420SE W140 S-Class while the 500SEL W126 is being examined to determine its value.

500SEC C126 and 300SE W126. The red 300SE is owned by a gentleman in his early 90s. He had some trouble turning his neck so I parked his car with the rear facing the scrubs. Man, it felt good maneuvering that old W126 again. I'd forgotten the quirks this car had - namely that you have to press the gas pedal down about 30% of the way before it starts to respond. This was a feature on all W126s to allow chauffeurs to accelerate smoothly so that the rear passengers "wouldn't feel a thing".

From left to right: 300SE, 420SE and 500SEL.

"Business Blondie" and her 2018 BMW i3S is an honorary member of the club. Her brother owns the silver SL280 R129 next to it. This is an early '280 with the inline-6, not V6.

Nothing special, but it's been awhile since I've seen an R170 SLK! This is an SLK200 Kompressor. The owner of this car also has an R171 SLK55 AMG and an R172 SLC43 AMG. I know for a fact that all CarSpinners viewing this post will pick this car over all others here because it has a manual transmission!  :tounge:

Aw hell, some more pics of that gorgeous 500SEL being examined to determine its value. Absolutely gorgeous.

Some random pics...

Those AMG hammers are awesome.  I'd love one some day.  Same for the 500SEL.  I'd love to experience that hydraulic suspension.  I don't think American-import SEL's ever got it, just the air springs.

I know it's small and insignificant, but I remember using a grey market import MB nav system like the one pictured in the S420.  This was around 1996 or 1997 (I think) and navigation units were still an oddity.  It didn't display a map, only arrows, turn by turn directions, and crude depictions of intersections, off ramps, etc.

I hope your dad isn't thinking of offloading his SL  ;)

Was the 500SEL also available with the skyblue/babyblue exerior paint with dark blue leather?

Perhaps you guys got the hydropneumatic suspension on the facelifted W126 in the form of the top model 560SEL, but don't quote me on that. Or MB dumped this feature for the US market after the W116, where it was only standard and available on the mighty 450SEL 6.9.

The W140 owner told me that his car has an original navigation system from the era - the one with simple arrows and street names. But he uses that Garmin (?) to get around because let's face it - it's simply better.

That car is for sale. If I had the garage space....
What price range would they be asking?  Just curious.

Possible.  Maybe it was available on the rear only, but I'm fairly sure we never got the full four corner hydraulic option on the 500 and 560 SEL.

For sure.  It was only somewhat useful then.  It's positively ancient now - like trying to use a C64 to get on to Google.

Though, the HU in my dad's E320 went and replacing it with one of those Nav units might look good.  Can't seem to find the model number though.

Is your dad's E320 a W124, W210 or W211? I remember the navigation on my dad's 2002 E320 W211 was called APS-50 and was the most basic navigation system available on the car. It's totally primitive by today's standards but it did its job. Updates of the system were done by inserting a CD with the newest maps into the CD-Player. My god, this is stone age technology now!

Old infotainment systems are by far the biggest blight on late model luxury cars. I can accept older interior motifs but old tech is such a turn off.

The navigation in the Land Cruiser is CD based and very AOL 4.0 looking. Some people have hacked the system to run Apple Car Play and other modern stuff.

I usually turn it off; which is what I do for the new cars too, so its all the same I guess.
Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

Agreed. If you own a car from that era with a primitive navigation system, you're better off using your smartphone.

In that respect, the current system on MBs (MBUX) and other modern cars is ideal with quick and efficient WiFi software updates.
