I'd like to put on some beefier tires on my truck.  I've always bought OEM tires from the dealership for my cars - I don't know much about tires.  I want something roughly 34" tall and with moderately better AT performance than stock.  Only limiting factor (I think) is wheel size - stock wheels are 8.5 wide.  Any ideas?

You want to put 34s on the G?
Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

What was the OEM size?  Were they also 34"?

Quick googling says 275/60-18, which is about 27.5 inches.

Tire Rack shows a 2010 G550 as having a 265/60-018 tire which is 30.5 inch diameter. A 285/70-18 would put him at 33.7 inches. He might be able to go bigger but he would have to check his clearance if he wants a wider tire. He could go up to 12.5 inch wide tires on an 8.5 inch wide wheel but it  might rub.

I have 30" tires on my Jeep. That is big enough to roll through 99% of pot holes.

That's correct.

I'm going to fit 50mm wheel spacers + a 2.5 inch spring lift which should give me enough clearance.

That would be a good choice. I am currently running Toyo Open Country A/T II tires on my truck and they have been pretty good. I have also heard good things about the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W tires.

The 285/70-18 size that I mentioned earlier doesn't have much of a selection.

Apparently wheel diameter is 7.5 not 8.5

Are you going to recalibrate your speedometer or just make a mental note that you'll be traveling about 10% faster than whatever it reads?

Recalibrate, or just put a sticky on the dash with common road speeds and their converted values

The widest tire recommended for a 7.5in wide wheel is 295mm or 11.5in.

The BF Goodrich K02 is pretty well regarded being a good AT + minor off-roading street tire. Looks good too
