What's everyone's thoughts on the R53 Mini Cooper S?  They're dropping to really reasonable prices, they're fun as hell to drive.  I can't imagine they're going to depreciate much more.  Seems like they wouldn't be a bad buy to have around as a grocery getter.

Want.

Saw a few Discovery Sports downtown today. It's so nice. Maybe I'll get that right out of school (my brother and I are planning to split a lease anyway) and wait on a sporty "winter" car. Just keep driving the Z4 daily and take the Discovery when it's snowing or below 40F or so.

Wouldn't your brother also want to use it when it's snowy?  Seems like it would sit, and then you would both be fighting over it

Nah, his daily is AWD. He's got an S4, looking into getting another one or an S6. If there's enough snow that his car can't get through, he'll work from home. The SUV's appeal for him is the utility, for the weekends.

He isn't adding a whole lot of utility by getting a Discovery Sport.  Those are pretty small.

It's a midsize SUV. It can hold a hell of a lot more than his S4. Must I remind you of how I had to transport the chairs because they wouldn't go in his car?

Hmm, a barebones RR Sport isn't that expensive...and still well equipped, and nearly a second faster to 60 than the Discovery.

A Disco Sport will be about the same size inside as a Ford Escape, if not smaller. But will be more expensive for no reason at all.....

If you're going to get a damn RR, get an Evoque, at least. The Disco Sport (at least in pics) looks cheap and nasty inside and out.

The Evoque is the Camaro of SUVs. Can't see out of the damn thing. No windows. To me, the Discovery looks awesome.

Haven't been in it yet to check out the interior.

Also, I don't know how big an Escape is. To me all SUVs are huge, though.

Guys, you can get a Cadillac ELR with like 10k miles for under $35k now.  Someone buy one as an investment.  It's a future classic!  They barely sold any!  And that interior is my baby that I worked on for months.

Like I said on TTAC... would have been a totally different story if GM had put Alpha money into making the ELR a ~$50K 5 seat PHEV sedan. Ring tune and Brembo Brakes™ be damned... people want a store brand Tesla way more than a store brand E46 328i

MrH

The ELR was in a cost death spiral from the get go.  The volume was simply too small to amortize the tooling and equipment needed to create a vehicle with totally unique body panels and interior.

As the volume goes down, the price goes up, which makes the volume go down, etc.  The actual engineering required for the powertrain was minimal.  It was just a Volt with a pretty face.  A very expensive pretty face.

But that car will always have a special spot in my heart.

I feel like Volt II is a better base. Better range, as well as more workable batteries. The T shaped battery of the old car took up a lot of space.

MrH

Yeah, ELR was delayed a couple of times, and then they cut the product life because it started butting up against the release of the 2nd gen Volt (D2JCI platform).  They knew it'd make the ELR look even more overpriced.

what kinda weird??

I got blips when driving every now and again, which turned into "won't start sometimes" which evolved into "won't start at all".
It was a crankshaft sensor.

Yes, thank you.

It actually took 3 home visits by my indy mechanic friends to finally get the rebuilt pump installed and the brakes bled correctly. It was finally ready yesterday. All faults gone, ABS/DSC works again.

My total spend for this problem ended up being about US$900 including everything. It is money but not bad at all for V10 goodness. This problem at the dealer or even at the indy if I got a new pump would have cost in excess of US$4,000 so I am very happy. This is the first non-regular-maintenance spend I've had for the M5 in the two years I've had it so pretty good so far!

As always with an E60 M5, fingers continue crossed - forever.

Saw this ad and thought, man they have really taken the 911 out of the 911. If not for the snub nose it could pass for front engined. Gorgeous... maybe achingly so, but not weird like the old ones.

When I Googled the tagline and got back a bunch of 9/11 photos I thought "waw what terrible ad copy, who greenlighted that"
