I don't think anybody on earth is cross shopping it with an Accord, you know?

But someone might with Porsches or Maseratis or something.

U still need to be able to see out of a car to drive it. I don't think any car is good enough to overcome that.........

Or other supercars with low clearance, low headroom, poor rear visibility and funky shifters.
Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

Small diesel engines sound like school buses/submission/sadness. Absolutely crushes me every time I see a proper poseur class car with a "18" or "20" + d engine designation on the trunk. What's the point???

Is the diesel circlejerk still a thing? I never understood the enthusiast obsession over them. They seem like the opposite of what a driving enthusiast would want in their car (low rpm, slow to rev, narrow powerband).

It definitely is. I think most American diesel enthusiasts have no actual experience with diesels

Totally true. Future father in law had his heart set on a diesel X5. Took some convincing but got him to order a Chevy SS instead. :erjerbs:

People really don't comprehend the difference in road size. I felt more at ease on the interstates with the moving truck from NY to NC than I do in the C4 on a b road. .

 Yup.

Towards the end of my stay in Germany I was ok taking the Voyager anywhere, but man the first few trips on the Autobahn were right-lane-only trips, and then white-knuckle brief jaunts into the left lane after a while....

Doing the math, at 50 MPG i spent about the same per mile here as i would have in the Civic or wifey's car. And to be totally honest it didn't feel underpowered.

Highway speeds were more like 70-80 rather than the 80-90 i do at home.... which is exactly in line with the average power difference

eek!

Apparently there was a rush to restart the race after a crash during lap1 and a marshall had to dodge some Autos...

Probably got caught on debris??  The article talking about the incident said the marshal was cleaning up stuff.

Average American spent $9,500 last year on transportation. I don't know if that counts depreciation but that seems crazy high. Even factoring that in worry and I spend half of that each. With the cars I want us to get we'd only add another $1000 or so each a year. That seems insane to me. $800/mo for a car with a median monthly income of $2,500 a month before taxes? Seems like a broken system

Wife and I saw someone driving a new vehicle and did some quick mental math:
A $36k vehicle (minivan or SUV) financed over 3 years= $1k/month just in payments!!!
Will

MrH

People aren't buying $36k vehicles with no money down and financing over 3 years for the most part.  People not putting money down are taking longer loans than that, and those that are financing for 3 years are putting money down

You'd add $1000/year for a new car?  How does that work?

You're missing fuel and insurance too in that number.  You're also comparing average spent and median income.  Apples to oranges.

I used to have an underling that made about 20% less than I did, had two kids and drove a new Evoque.

Her monthly note was literally the total purchase price of my car.

Haven't you had a not small number of some pretty significant car repairs, though?

I've replaced a couple engines, one after the idiots at Georgia Subaru didn't diagnose a head leak which made it keep overheating.

That's 3 months of payments on each car (3yrs apart) at that hypothetical $1000/month payment above.

I've done the math before and with purchase price, repairs, and an occasional rental car I come in around $150/month on car costs (not including gas/insurance/regular oil changes).  (I do a lot of the repairwork myself)

Meh.  I'm more surprised by how people overspend on houses and vacations than I am on cars.  There are so many damn near mansions around here, and there's no way everyone is making the kind of money to comfortably afford them.

True!!

Vacations are great though- if you're not going into debt for them.
Will

MrH

Families that are dropping $10k+ every year on vacations blows my mind.  I know they aren't making a huge amount of money.  That's $800+ a month just for vacation.  At least a car is an asset, albeit a depreciating one.  You own something at the end.
