Families that are dropping $10k+ every year on vacations blows my mind.  I know they aren't making a huge amount of money.  That's $800+ a month just for vacation.  At least a car is an asset, albeit a depreciating one.  You own something at the end.

YOLO-
Most of our good photos and memories are vacations. Day to day life who cares?...

But yes, MUST keep it in perspective and budget properly for trips.

People are fucking retarded with money. I could never figure out how the hell people making $100,000 a year were rolling in $60,000 cars every three years, doing $50,000 in home renos every five years, and spending $10,000 a year on vacations.

Then I learned all about HELOCs. "200 grand at 3.5%? Fuck it, whatever!"

Average American spent $9,500 last year on transportation. I don't know if that counts depreciation but that seems crazy high. Even factoring that in worry and I spend half of that each. With the cars I want us to get we'd only add another $1000 or so each a year. That seems insane to me. $800/mo for a car with a median monthly income of $2,500 a month before taxes? Seems like a broken system

I would guess that figure also includes fuel, which I roughly calculated at ~$140/mo or $1680/yr for an "average" driver (this wildly varies in practice of course)

You'd add $1000/year for a new car?  How does that work?

You're missing fuel and insurance too in that number.  You're also comparing average spent and median income.  Apples to oranges.
My number includes fuel.

Monthly payment: $200 (actual is 150)
Fuel: 1500 miles * $2/gallon / 30 MPG = $100
Insurance = $100
Maintenance: varies (wifey's car is zero maintenance outside of consumables, I'm getting an engine replaced as we speak), let's average to  $100
Depreciation: I would say our cars probably lose... 80 a month?

So $580 a month, $7000 or so a year, but again I don't think they included depreciation so it's more like $6000 for us

Plus she got a factor in the average American car is 12 years old, which is too old to finance. And I bet a lot of people are running liability insurance only two. I figure our insurance is average for the country so you can knock another 200 to 300 off of ours as well. So I don't know where the hell people are paying 9500 year, unless there are a ton of people with for figure car notes and insurance bills bringing up the average period and yeah we're comparing mean to median, but we have to look at the information we have. You can still make some reasonable conclusions.

Most people are paying more than $200 a month for a car.

I still don't get how you figure a new car only adds $1000/year.

Not brand new, just newer. Looking to get cars for ~15-20K which will put our payments up around 250.

Random thought, pictures don't do it justice but the OG Twingo is a great design. Simple and cheap but still stylish

OG Clio looks great too as does the new one.

The overhang itself isn't any worse than the W-bodies and i'm sure some other cars like the new Maxima and Dart (the dart is horrendous here).  It's just the way the front end graphics/styling is done and that the rear overhang is so short that makes it stand out.

Picked up the France rental and they tried to give me another Cactus. Raised a stink and they gave me this:

That's right, brown manual diesel wagon (Ok not really brown)

Pretty nice, way better than the Cactus. Feels kind of big though. Kind of wish I got a B segment car. Averaged 51 MPG at 85-90 for like 150 miles. Feels quick enough. Really wanted a Clio though

The second video is interesting to me- never seen a tow truck lift a car like that before. I Assume that they could only do this with cars which have roll cages installed....

I don't even get what's going on here. Dude either has proof that allegations are false, or doesn't. If it's false is the dealership just trying to scam money off someone who has a lot??

MrH

After seeing the Smoking Tire of the one drive on youtube of the CL55 AMG, I looked online.  Sure enough, they're really cheap used.  This one is just down the street from me:

http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?zip=45342&endYear=2017&modelCode1=CL_CLASS&showcaseOwnerId=69568033&makeCode1=MB&startYear=1981&firstRecord=0&searchRadius=25&mmt=%5BMB%5B%5D%5BCL_CLASS%5B%5D%5D%5D&listingId=434686454&Log=0

That's a big body Mercedes coupe with 493 hp in great shape for <$16k.  The reason they're so cheap?  The active body control suspension costs $11k to replace, and fails on a regular basis.  The guy on the smoking tire did a full custom airbag setup and spent way too much making custom mounts and everything.

Looks like you could do a coilover swap pretty cheap.  Problem is, there aren't any sway bars.  You'd need to completely swap a W220 front and rear sub frame to put on sway bars.  You could probably do the whole thing for $3k + a whole lot of time.  If I had $20k for a project car and all the time in the world, I'd do that in a heart beat.

You don't need sway bars, just increase the spring rate and control it with double adjustable shocks so it isn't too harsh. That, or you could probably custom install a splined sway bar.
2020 BMW 330i, 1969 El Camino, 2017 Bolt EV

MrH

Guys are running them without sway bars and it's supposedly still pretty good.  W220 subframe and sway bars would be cheap though and I think they bolt right up.

That's a bad ass car for the money.

I'm not a big fan of sway bars any more. Shock technology has gotten to the point where stiff springs still ride nicely, and giant sway bars are heavy + put a lot of stress on the bolts + rock the car a lot on uneven bumps.

Edit: also, stiffer springs help with brake dive and accel squat

I wish that ABC system on that one near me was totally shot and the thing was slumped over to one side   You could get that for <$10k then I bet.

That might be the craziest depreciation I've ever seen.
