Most people hate driving, and while I personally don't I can't blame them.

The necessary tools to make Americans better drivers (a culture of personal responsibility, well maintained roads, adequate driver's training and licensing) are never going to materialize; at least not in our current political climate. Getting killed by a distracted driver is a pretty stupid way to die. So if these tools or the option of autonomous driving can save lives, I'm for it. I'm of sound enough mind to not be paralyzed with fears of logical fallacies like slippery slopes or unrealistic timelines and proliferation rates of autonomous roads. We will not see fully autonomous cars in our lifetime... tech will get just good enough to mitigate our driving shortcomings fueled by our increasingly aging and distracted population.

Hmm, cunning plan: charge for the touchscreen & internetry wizardry package. Then charge more for the driving automation package to stop the fuckers killing themselves.

It's like "We make cigarettes, and we have another division developing & selling smoking cessation products. Bwahahaha."

Thanks to old 911s, I feel like you could leave new cars behind and never miss them.

Just get something that you can drive in the snow and to Costco and shit, a 964 Cab, and watch as cars get ever and ever shittier.  Now with touchscreen wheels and a steering wheel with a full QWERTY keyboard!  Don't want to pay attention when you're driving?  Don't!  We'll just hit the brakes for you.  #notliablewhenitfails

Found a gen1 Taurus SHO with some minimal rust for $700 in Wyoming. Sunroof and interior looks decent. Would cost maybe $1000 to ship it here?

Problem is he hasn't driven it in 6yrs. Who know what's rotted out???  Says it starts fine but I imagine every gasket bushing seal or line needs replacing.  Fun project but beyond my capability probably.....

Thinking about next cars...

My motto is never own a boring vehicle, so my initial thoughts of buying an old-ish Accord/whatever is out. Thinking I want something that can go camping/shooting/skiing/surfing, so a cool 4x4 it is. SUV > truck, I guess, because of the secure cargo area. And I already have a "truck".

Ideas so far:
- old Cherokee
- old Land Cruiser, probably a late 80's one and not an FJ-40 since I'd feel obliged to baby a classic
- 4Runner, although I plan on doing more than hopping curbs so this might not be good enough

4Runner is the best.

I would be looking at an older one. Probably a 3rd gen ('96-'02), maybe a 4th ('03-'09)

Something in good mechanical condition, probably from California or Arizona to avoid any rust, but not new enough for me to care about scratches or dings.

MrH

Problem is they don't depreciate. I was looking at 3rd and 4th gen, and couldn't justify spending $20k+ on something that old with that many miles.

Land Cruisers are like that too. Some around $10k for stock with 150-200k miles. Most closer to $18k with some off-roading mods.

Land Cruisers are $Texas; I've not-very-seriously entertained the idea of buying one, and price is always the stumbling block. They're cool, but not $20,000+ for a ratty one cool.

Same thing with 4Runners, just not to the same degree.

I have been within a pen's grasp of buying an FJ-62 twice in the last year. Both times they were sold after the next day when I wanted to think it over.
Maybe we need to start off small. I mean, they don't let you fuck the glumpers at Glumpees without a level 4 FuckPass, do they?

Perfect example: 2011 4Runner with 95k miles is $24k around here. I'd rather pay another $12k and get one brand new.

Even Wranglers depreciate more than that, albeit only slightly. What drives the used market so high? Doesn't seem like there's limited supply. Are 4x4 buyers just terrible negotiators?
2020 BMW 330i, 1969 El Camino, 2017 Bolt EV

MrH

The length of ownership for 4Runners is abnormally high. No one gets rid of them when they buy them new. So there actually is a limited supply. They last forever too, so even with 150k+ miles, there's still quite a bit of usable life in them.

I sold Legacy Dec15 with 201k+ miles on it. Bought it in June 2008 I believe with 126k miles on it. Makes me miss it

That's pretty awesome. Love those classic fiberglass boats.

But I gotta say, if you think old cars are death traps, they're nothing compared to old boats like that.

Fuck touchscreen controls. They're completely irredeemable, totally unnecessary, a huge step backward in ergonomics and just all-around shite. Fuck 'em.

This, again. You might be wondering what has earned such vitriolic hate. This:

This morning I discovered the stupid touchscreen can't be used with gloves on.
