There are 745's with 60k or so miles going for $6-7k...I know they're reliability nightmares but that's tempting...
Some cars are best enjoyed purely visually. I.e. you don't have to own it

My pick of that era would probably be a 640i coupe. Avoids the reliability nightmare of the V8, still has the Bangle Butt. Might be available in stick too

There was no Bangle-era 640Ci. The US only got the 645i, 650i (V8s), and M6 (V10). They made a 630Ci/630i but they didn't sell it here.

The next gen had an I6 640i though.

Damn, could have swore we got the 640i back then. Oh well, not interested.

I don't think the bangle 6 came with a 6 stateside.

That's another car I've always thought about picking up - a 6 speed 650 coupe.

I wouldn't trust one of those as far as I could throw them. BMW V8s have been problematic pretty much from the beginning

Really too bad we didn't get the 6 pots. But for all the flack Bangle got at the time the cars have aged incredibly well. They all look better than current BMWs IMO

Really?  I was unaware.  That's too bad.  I've heard a fair number of horror stories regarding their turbo 6 but never the V8's, especially the N/A ones.

Yea from what I've read the 6 pots are the best bet. Even the 4 banger has prompted a class action lawsuit for timing chain shit.

Imo all the "Bangle era" shit has aged really well. I still think the E60 and E90 are some of the best looking sedans on the road today. I think the E65 has even done quite well with the years (strictly aesthetically speaking).

Honesty ever since Sporty brought it up I'm really thinking about getting an E65...pre face lift, sub 70k miles for $7k?  Throw in another grand for a good paint correction and 15,000 for the inevitable repairs, and I'm set!

But no seriously.

That back end still looks like crap.

Well, all three of the Bangle sedans replaced some of the best looking sedans ever made. I still don't think the E65 looks great (especially compared to the E38), but it's well proportioned and pretty clean.

Post-facelift was better

Sometimes they don't catch your vision until its too late...........

I still feel like the E65 looked Italian. Proportions were great too. How do you follow up on the E38? That was BMW's Ducati 916.

I've always felt the GS is a little underrated. My mom used to have one, the first gen. I still have positive associations with that car and I like them to this day. Nice car!

I hear the manual cars are decently reliable if you can find them.

Those SMG 1 cars though, yikes.

Lexus disagrees. GS is supposedly on death row. Personally it's the only sedan Lexus sells that I like, so I'm bummed. IS is not much lighter, but it is uglier and more cramped. I could actually live with an ES if it weren't so big... next car needs to be smaller than the Kia. I stand by my hot take of the LS looking like a Buick Lacrosse. The GS looks great, drives great and has aged really nicely. Sad to see it go

Thanks! Yeah if it's good to me I may stick with them again for a bit. In all likelihood I'll be buying another vehicle within a year but the GS will probably still be the daily driver.

Thanks! This one in particular was very well reviewed because Lexus finally got around to making a car that compared favorably to BMW on driving dynamics. I've driven previous GS models and liked them too but I was surprised how much I liked this generation.

The LS is a giant expensive land yacht and makes sense to keep for people who buy those sorts of things, the ES is nice for that segment and is either better looking (or differently ugly) now, but the GS did seem to fill an important niche in their lineup that appealed to a different kind of buyer. I pretty much didn't like a single thing about the IS. RC 350 was cool but I wanted a sedan and it was a little too new to have good CPO options.

The "mid-size" (which is still pretty damn big) sports sedan market just doesn't get much love these days.

That does sound like a good idea... It just wouldn't feel like a real car search if I didn't ask advice for what kind of SUV or truck I should buy to tow a trailer and have 10 people tell me to buy a Miata.
