BMW Unveils New 2021 4-Series Convertible, Priced From $51,300 In The U.S.

The 2021 BMW 4-Series Convertible has just been unveiled, some 35 years after the first 3-Series Convertible was released.

The key difference between this new 4-Series Convertible and the model it replaces is that the 2021 now features a soft-top whereas the previous-generation car had a heavy hardtop. BMW says the new soft-top helps to reduce weight, improve cargo space, and provides the car with a lower center of gravity to improve handling.

This soft-top includes a flush-fitting glass rear window, multiple layers of insulation and a fabric cover that is available in standard black and an optional Moonlight black that provides it with a metallic shimmer in direct sunlight. The roof can be opened and closed in 18 seconds at speeds of up to 31 mph (50 km/h). Cargo space has been increased to 9.0 cubic feet (255 liters), an increase of 1.2 cubic feet (34 liters) over the previous-generation 4-Series Convertible.

Like the rest of the new 4-Series range, the updated Convertible is larger than its predecessor. In fact, it is 5.2 inches longer, 1.0 inch wider, and 0.1-inch higher. Its wheelbase is also 1.6-inches longer and the front track has grown by 1.5 inches.

In the United States, the 4-Series Convertible will be offered with the same range of engines as the 4-Series Coupe. As such, the range kicks off with 430i and 430i xDrive models that feature a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine with 255 hp between 5,000 rpm and 6,500 rpm, as well as 295 lb-ft of torque between 1,550 rpm and 4,400 rpm.

Sitting above these variants in the range are the M440i and M440i xDrive Convertibles that use a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with 382 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque between 1,800 rpm and 5,000 rpm. All models feature an eight-speed automatic transmission and M440i models come standard with an M Sport rear differential.

U.S. pricing for the 2021 BMW 4-Series Convertible starts at $53,100 for the 430i, $55,100 for the 430i xDrive, $64,000 for the M440i, and $66,000 for the M440i xDrive. These prices exclude a $995 destination charge.

Nice colour.

Too bad about the grille.  Makes me think of giant fly eyes.
