This Six-Wheeled Jeep Wrangler Is All About Show, But It'll Still Cost You $150,000

Ever since the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6 debuted back in 2013, people have been fascinated by off-roaders that feature three axles and six wheels. This Jeep Wrangler recently reviewed by Doug DeMuro has been created to mimic the G63 6×6.

The off-roader, which by the way, is right-hand drive, is currently up for sale from CNC Motors for $149,999. It also appears to be more about shocking looks than it is about serious off-roading. Most notably, it's not actually six-wheel drive because there is no driveshaft on the third axle. Consequently, it's still four-wheel drive and the rear-most wheels are simply there for show.

Alongside the 6×6 conversion, the vehicle's ride height has been aggressively lifted and it has been fitted with a set of off-road focused tires.

Perhaps the most intriguing thing about the Jeep (alongside the third axle) is the fact that it is now a pickup truck – a Gladiator, if you will. It appears as though most of the body panels from behind the rear doors are custom-made to help the vehicle somewhat mimic the look of the Gladiator. Among the aftermarket parts is the removable rear cap that has been shortened from a typical Wrangler.

One other interesting aspect of this Wrangler 6×6 is the external roll cage which while it may look quite cool, doesn't appear to be functional as one of its mounting points is actually on the rear wheel arch. In the event of a rollover, it would likely do very little to protect the roof from damage.

We know of at least one Jeep Gladiator out there that is undergoing a six-wheeled transformation. As the Gladiator leaves the Jeep factory as a pickup truck, it could make for a more compelling G63 6×6 copycat.

Six wheelers, even those with all driven axles, tend to do worse, not better in many offroad situations. On hack jobs like this, they always do worse, often lifting up the driven rear axle, and making the whole thing effectively a front wheel drive.

I can't call that a roll cage. At best, it may be a roof rack, but the way it visually sags in the middle makes me think its not even up to that task.

6x6s are really more for handling surfaces mud or sand, where it's beneficial to spread the weight out over a larger contact patch.  They generally don't do well as trail crawlers where you need to climb over obstacles like rocks or ledges.

Yet go to any mud bog or sand dune, and you won't find any. You may find all manner of ridiculous contraptions at places like the Bounty Hole, but 6 wheelers are a rare sight. You might find some deuce and a halfs, but of those, the guys who really take them off road actually cut the third axle off.

Uhhhh yeah, that is not a roll cage.

They turn better without the tandem axle.

They do almost everything better. Unless you're rocking 10 tons or more, that extra axle is dead weight.

The third axle is not connected. There's NO driveshaft going to it! LOL!!!

So it's not even a 6x6.  Pointless.

This is worth roughly $5000 less than whatever the blue book is on a stock 2016 Wrangler.

I feel like a dually would be easier and work better. Or just massive balloon tires.

Yes, on most surfaces.

Looks like the drive shaft for the second Dif is in the bed of the truck at the 8:57 mark.....

Hmm, and the front axle has a drive-through diff on it, but there's no provision for a power splitter (between axle diff). So, this is a 6-wheel drive, but only off road.

edit- actually I can't tell. We never get a decent look at the front of the lead diff. Infuriating that this is like a 20 minute.video and the only thing even marginally interesting about this vehicle is glossed over so quickly.

Yeah, but like, he spent four minutes telling us that the "bed" is just the normal cargo area of a Wrangler.  Super critical info.

And never once went "hey, I wonder if this is the missing driveshaft sitting here?"

I'd be surprised if he knew what a driveshaft looks like.

I like the angry face grilles.

Lets me pretend they're the villains in a Thomas the Tank Engine direct to DVD short.
