2020 Volkswagen Golf Mk8 Fully Revealed In Official Images

Volkswagen's countdown clock for the unveiling of the all-new, eighth generation Golf just went to zero, as a full-blown gallery has been unleashed on the internet.

The pictures were posted by Motor Elpais, and they show the car in its entirety.  The end result is pretty handsome and this shouldn't be too surprising as spy photographers have caught undisguised prototypes in the past.















The front end is instantly recognizable, but designers have made a handful of changes.  The headlights are all-new and feature a slimmer design as well as stylish daytime running lights.  In between, is a revised grille that appears smaller than before and features a prominent Volkswagen logo.

Further below, we can see a wide central air intake with body-color and chrome accents.  The model has also been equipped with a new hood which is more shapely than its predecessor.

The evolutionary design continues aft of the A-pillar as the 2020 Golf adopts sleeker bodywork and a more pronounced shoulder line.  The model also has a dynamic character line which now cuts through the door handles.  The greenhouse also appears sportier than before and the prominent C-pillar carries over.









Out back, the Golf 8 has a new liftgate that features revised lighting units and a more rakish rear window.  Elsewhere, we can see an evolutionary bumper and a faux dual exhaust system.

The Golf GTE features a slightly different design as the plug-in hybrid has a sportier front fascia with a honeycomb mesh insert.  There's also a charging port on the front fender as well as aerodynamic side skirts.

A number of the styling cues are shared with the Golf R Line which also has black trim around the front air intake.  However, it eschews the honeycomb mesh insert for black triangular accents.  The model also has a sportier rear end and what appears to be a proper exhaust system.







While the exterior styling is pretty evolutionary, bigger changes occur inside the cabin.  Drivers side behind a new steering wheel and find themselves looking at a digital instrument cluster and a more modern, free-standing infotainment system.

The dashboard is also new and it features a stepped design with an illuminated accent on the passenger side.  We can also see slender air vents, metallic accents and new switchgear.

Full details will be released tomorrow, but the car reportedly measures 168.5 inches (428 cm) long and 57.5 inches (146 cm) tall.  The wheelbase is also said to span 111.8 inches (284 cm).  The latter figure would be a significant increase as the Golf 7 has a wheelbase of 103.8 inches (264 cm).









An assortment of different engines will be available and choices are slated to include a 1.0-liter three-cylinder as well as 1.5- and 2.0-liter four-cylinders.  We can also expect a 1.5-liter CNG unit as well as an assortment of 2.0-liter diesels.

On the eco-friendly side of the equation, the e-Golf has reportedly been dropped to make room for the ID.3.  Despite this, there will be another GTE plug-in hybrid which uses a petrol engine and an electric motor.

Later on the company will introduce an assortment of other models.  A GTI variant is due next year with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 232 hp (173 kW / 235 PS).  It will reportedly be followed by a Golf GTI Cup with 286 hp (213 kW / 290 PS) and a Golf R with 325 hp (245 kW / 330 PS).

Will really have to see how they implement infotainment controls before I completely write it off

MyLincoln Touch or whatever the fuck is in wifey's car is awful, BUT you can control the radio and basic HVAC shit through the wheel/dash screens. If the only way to deal with HVAC is through a touch screen VW goofed big time. It's amazing that the more advanced tech gets the WORSE interfaces get. :facepalm: This has mega showroom appeal but I'm skeptical as hell about its ease of use while actually driving.

As for the design... it's a Golf. We are supposedly only getting the GTI/R, which is kind of cool. I hope they give it a more baby friendly back seat.

Happy to see that manual shifter, and that it sits nice and high in the console. Very mature and handsome design overall, inside and out.

Boring. Needs a bigger grille. Too much tire sidewall. Nobody can drive a manual transmission. Too much cargo space. The only good part is the electronic parking brake.

It's a Golf. Exactly what all of us expected, and that's a great thing. Wouldn't surprise me if my next car were a Golf R. I miss my GTI

Is the ENTIRE HVAC on the screen?  New outback at least has defrost buttons and temperature buttons for both sides as physical buttons (then a big portion of the screen permanently showing HVAC controls).

If all HVAC controls are on the screen and buried in a menu, that's going to be a disaster.

The Electronic Parking Brake has been available on VW since 2005 with the introduction of the B6 Passat

I'm pretty sure my Bolt's electric handbrake just presses the real brakes down a little bit. The pedal depresses when you use it.

It has an understated handsomeness to it.  Clean lines, good proportions, functional shape, yet doesn't look like it completely abandoned form for function.  Not a huge departure from the MkVII.  A little sportier in some of the details.

HVAC in the infotainment is no bueno, though.  Those of us in cold climates who wear gloves when we drive do not appreciate having to remove our gloves to switch on the defrost in the morning.

Part of me wants to say they could implement some IFTTT stuff to defrost automatically. If AND(exterior temp below freezing + moisture detected on windscreen) then run defrost mode

Galaxy is right, the A/C controls appear to be physical buttons below the digital touch screen. I've heard from other sources that the new Golf has voice control (like the MBUX system) which means you could also order the computer to turn on the A/C, heating, switch to a specific radio station etc.

2020 VW Golf: Here Are All The Details, From Design To Engines And Tech, Plus 88 Images

The brand new Volkswagen Golf is officially here, with the German carmaker finally sharing all the specs and images we've been waiting for, following a live unveiling event in Wolfsburg.

Unlike any other Golf before it, the Mk8 will be available in no fewer than five hybrid drive iterations, two of which will be plug-in hybrids, each with a new 13 kWh lithium-ion battery that allows for 60 km (37 miles) of zero emissions driving.

Before we get into its specs, let's talk design and measurements. The all-new Golf is 4,284 mm (168.6 inches) long, 1,789 mm (70.4 inches) wide and 1,456 mm (57.3 inches) tall, with a wheelbase of 2,636 mm (103.7 inches). Compared to the Mk7, the new model is a little bit longer and shorter, with a slightly larger wheelbase.

The body also doesn't just look sharper, it literally is, lowering the end face to 2.21 m2 and the drag coefficient to 0.275. Overall though, there's no mistaking the Mk8 for anything other than a Golf, and if you've been following VW's design exploits as of late, you probably won't be surprised by any of this model's visuals.




More to see, more to do

The interior on the other hand is probably more exciting than the exterior, since it features so many novelties. For starters, it's all about living in the digital age. Buyers can now enjoy an optional head-up display on their Golf, as well as internet connectivity where the car's standard OCU (Online Connectivity Unit) comes with integrated eSIM links, We Connect and We Connect Plus functions and services.

According to VW, the new Golf will be setting new benchmarks in its class in terms of assisted driving functions. Its Travel Assist feature for example makes assisted driving possible on highways up to speeds of 210 km/h (130 mph), without the driver having to actively steer, accelerate or brake.

The 2020 Golf is also the first VW model to connect to its environment as standard. Here, you have the Car2X functionality which receives information from other vehicles within a radius of up to 800 meters (875 yards), plus signals from the traffic infrastructure to warn drivers – in turn, this information can be rerouted to other Car2X-equipped models.

Furthermore, the Golf's new IQ Light LED matrix headlights will provide additional safety thanks to their partly interactive light functions. Other driver assist features include ACC with predictive speed detection, Front Assist, Oncoming vehicle braking when turning, and in a sense, DCC adaptive chassis control too.




What do I get as standard?

All Golfs come with the following goodies at no extra price: LED headlights and LED taillights, Keyless Start, digital instruments and an 8.25-inch infotainment display, We Connect and We Connect Plus, multi-function steering wheel, Climatronic (automatic air conditioning), Lane Assist lane-keeping, a new turn-off assist, Front Assist, predictive pedestrian protection and the previously-mentioned Car2X tech.

Life spec models offer 16-inch alloy wheels, exterior background lighting (including logo projection onto the ground), an interface to charge smartphones, wireless mobile phone integration, interior background lighting in 10 colors, center armrest at the front, ParkPilot parking aid and City Light. Opt instead for a Style model and you gain 17-inch alloys, additional chrome trim, sports seats, 32 colors for the ambient lighting, LED headlights with cornering light, poor weather light, LED taillight clusters with dynamic turn signal, Travel Assist and Lane Assist.

Then there's the R-Line with its 17-inch Sebring alloys, R-Line bumpers, high-gloss black sill trims, rear diffuser, premium sports seats, driving mode selection, black headliner, aluminum gear knob, perforated leather for the steering wheel and more.

Last but not least is the GTE hybrid version, which comes with illuminated strips in the radiator grille, GTE-specific bumpers, special 17-inch alloys, red brake calipers, GTE roof spoiler and wider side sill panels. Inside, there are sports seats, a pulsating starter button, stainless steel pedals and 30 available colors for the ambient light system.

The best you can do in terms of the displays is go for the two optional 10-inch infotainment systems, which in conjunction with a large Discover Pro navigation system create the Innovision Cockpit. If that's not enough, adding the 400-watt Harman Kardon sound system will probably do it – as in, create a more premium atmosphere.





Let's talk performance

All of the new Golf's gasoline and diesel engines are turbocharged direct injection units, with outputs ranging from 90 PS (88 HP) to 300 PS (295 HP), eventually. Meanwhile, a new 6-speed manual gearbox has been developed for front-wheel drive models, further cutting CO2 emissions.

The gasoline-powered TSI units are available in four output stages during this initial launch phase. They generate 90 PS (88 HP), 110 PS (108 HP), 130 PS (128 HP) and 150 PS (148 HP) respectively. The 90 PS and 110 PS engines are 1.0-liter three-cylinder units, while the 130 PS and 150 PS ones are 1.5-liter engines.

"From an output of 110 PS, they will also be configurable as a mild hybrid drive (eTSI) with 48-V system and dual clutch gearbox. Three 2.0-litre TSI engines for the Golf GTI, Golf GTI TCR and Golf R as well as a 1.5-litre TGI suitable for operation with natural gas (CNG) and petrol will be launched at a later point."

The Golf Mk8's 2.0-liter TDI diesel engines have been developed from scratch, and generate 115 PS (113 HP) and 150 PS (148 HP). Both can be had with either a manual gearbox or a DSG automatic, while the 150 PS model can also be had with 4MOTION all-wheel drive. A performance-oriented TDI variant will eventually arrive as the all-new Golf GTD.





Mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid

The eTSI mild hybrid drives of the Golf are complete novelties, featuring a 48-V belt starter generator, a 48-V lithium-ion battery and the latest TSI engines. These variants are exclusively available with a 7-speed DSG automatic and produce 110 PS (108 HP), 130 PS (128 HP) and 150 PS (148 HP).

As for the eHybrid range, you can get one with 204 PS (201 HP) or the GTE version, which puts down 245 PS (241 HP) thanks to a 1.4-liter TSI engine, an electric drive motor and a 13 kWh lithium-ion battery.

The new Golf will first arrive in European dealerships this December.

Considering VW couldn't make a normal defrost system work without regularly blowing fuses (common problem on MkV Jettas, including mine), not sure I'd trust them to come up with a reliable "smart" defrost system.

If the fuse keeps blowing, then it just needs a bigger fuse. Simple logic.  :huh:

I upsized the fuse, per recommendations on the MkV forums.  Still blew fuses left and right.  Didn't dare go bigger for fear of the wire harness burning up.

My problem with voice command is the delay, plus with other people in the car you have to ask everyone to stop talking to make a change, and wait for the right moment to tell them to stop talking, since it would be rude to interrupt them in the middle of a thought.

Then it should take an automatic reset circuit breaker, to save on fuses.

It's not that big of a deal. I mean the "slight delay" isn't a problem in my experience (MBUX in my A250). If people are riding with me, I will only engage the system when everyone is quiet. Even so, I've found that the system will still recognize my desires despite background noise. Where my sunvisors are, on both sides, there is a visible microphone, so it will hear my commands at all times.

And even though some reviews like to make fun of MBUX in that it will always respond when the word "Mercedes" is mentioned, the reality is that it will only respond when you say "Hey Mercedes/Mercedes" in a louder tone, at least in my car. ;)

Can't wait for the first reviews of the VW "MBUX" system.
