Title: MotorWeek Retro Reviews
Post by: 93JC on February 11, 2015, 09:12:53 PM
Wimmer already posted the Dodge Aries wagon review from 1985; MotorWeek has posted a shwackload of them to their Youtube channel. Click here (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8HILNMicoi6frBzfDro05x0W-44D1ZWz) for the entire playlist.

There are some amusing reviews, e.g. the Yugo vs. Hyundai Excel comparison:

How about the very first episode of MotorWeek in its entirety?  Journey back to those halcyon days of 1982!

Both the Ford Escort and the Fiat Strada are reviewed.  And John Davis had hair!!!

Otherwise, it's boring as hell.  That's one thing about MotorWeek that hasn't changed.

What happened to the rear lights!? I mean the plastic bar above them looks thicker and higher than those found on European Ritmo's.

Love those mustaches.

Also, comments like "Only the radio failed to work as advertised" when defending a car's quality is just not a good sign.

1982 Pontiac 1000

The crappiness; it burns.

Dont have the time to watch? Ill sum it up for you; 0-60 in 30 seconds.

If nothing else, this gives perspective on why Beetles were commonplace on the roads well into the mid '80s.

My uncle managed the plant that made those Pontiacs back in the mid 80s.

EDIT: Opps I thought it said Pontiac 6000!

The 6000 seems to have been a fairly decent car for the times. Wasnt here also an AWD version?

What plant BTW?

0-59 in 23.3 seconds. That extra MPH is very difficult.

Chevette 87 (comercial) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LBm4FLh8-U#)

I wonder if it scraped its muffler at 0:31

So terrible, you'll want to end it all by driving into the sea!

Watched a few of those - '82 Corvette, '81 280ZX Turbo, '87 GNX - good times, brings back memories.

Did you see the body roll on that 24 grand Corvette?

Yep there was an AWD version! And it was the Plant In/close to Terry Town New York. I spent a whole day in that plant with him! IIRC the plant was 1 mile long.

25MPG LOL

It's not going to get good gas mileage when you have to floor it all the time to keep from getting rear ended.

I'm also not sure how valid the 280ZX test was since it looked icy.

Watching those reviews makes me laugh at folks complaining about cars today. An ND Miata is faster than pretty much any non-exotic from the 1982 model year. An ND Miata with a supercharger/turbo and upgraded legs is faster than any car on the road in 1982.

Our onramps have become perilously shorter over time!

A 280ZX with a simple boost controller would be faster than an ND.
