BMW Teases New 2-Series Coupe, Promises It'll Be Even Better Than Its Predecessor

The new BMW 2-Series Coupe has entered its final phase of development before production begins in late summer.

BMW notes that the Nurburgring has served as the testbed for much of the car's development, allowing the German automaker to perfect the suspension, chassis, damping, steering, and braking systems. Testing has also been conducted on public roads around Munich and the brand's test site in Maisach.



Topping out the new 2-Series Coupe line-up (until the next M2 arrives) will be the M240i xDrive Coupe. This model will feature a BMW TwinPower Turbo inline-six engine pushing out 374 hp while mated to an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. Power will be sent to the ground through an xDrive all-wheel drive system, although BMW notes that this system is rear-wheel oriented. This variant will also feature an M sports differential.

Across the broader 2-Series Coupe family, all models have improved torsional rigidity over the outgoing model due to a superior body structure. BMW says that static torsional stiffness has been increased by around 12 per cent compared to the previous model. All versions also come standard with stroke-dependent dampers that improve the sportiness of the car as well as its ride comfort. An Adaptive M Chassis with electronically-controlled dampers will be an option.

These images of heavily camouflaged prototype don't provide us with a very good idea of how the car will look but BMW says the exterior design incorporates a new front spoiler lip, splitter, air curtains, air deflectors, and a rear axle cover that reduce lift on the front axle by 50 per cent compared to the old model.

Maybe Toyota will share with them the secret of getting steering feel from the EPAS rack.  Clearly not a hardware limitation since the Supra apparently has steering feel.
