2019 Kia Ceed GT Review: Sports Hatch Doesn't Bristle With Power, But Is Enjoyable To Drive

Hot hatches have come a long way since the original VW Golf GTI, especially when it comes to power.

Whereas in the 1980s 100 HP was considered more than enough for a hot hatch, today a 200 horsepower compact hatchback is considered more of a warm hatch than a full-blown hot hatch.

That's exactly the category the all-new Kia Ceed GT fits in. Launched at the Paris Auto Show last autumn, Korea's new sporty hatch targets European customers who need a practical hatch capable of vigorous acceleration, but not tuned for the track as most of today's top hot hatches are. So how does the new Ceed GT feel like to drive? Autogefühl had a go in it and, as always, their video presentation is very detailed.

Before skipping to the driving impressions, it must be said that Kia has done a fine job with the styling of its warm hatch. While it does feature clear sporty cues, the Ceed GT doesn't go over the top with the styling so you won't feel like a boy racer, yet manages to distinguish itself from lesser versions.

It can perform the exact same tasks as any compact hatch, although taller passengers won't be that happy in the rear because legroom is poor compared to the competition. As for interior quality, the materials could be better, but design-wise the cabin is a nice place to spend time in.

The Ceed GT's 204 PS (201 hp) 1.6-liter turbo-four makes it an entertaining proposition, particularly with the optional seven-speed dual-clutch transmission fitted to the test car. The chassis makes it surprisingly agile on twisty roads and comfortable on the motorway, and overall, the reviewer found it a major evolution compared to its predecessor.
