Title: Best and worst drivers by state.
Post by: S204STi on April 03, 2009, 04:23:22 PM
GMAC Survey puts New Jersey at the bottom as having the worst drivers in the country (http://usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/cars-trucks/daily-news/080523-The-Worst-Drivers-in-the-U-S-Live-in-/).

"ongratulations, New Jersey drivers! You are officially the worst drivers in the United States!

No, we didn't just pull of the turnpike with this conclusion.  There was a test...

CNN Money explains, "The 2008 GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test found that 16.4%, of drivers, or 33 million, don't know the rules of the road."  The survey asked 5,524 drivers from all 50 states and the District of Columbia a series of "questions derived from official Department of Motor Vehicle tests" to gauge their knowledge of driving laws.  "Among the main sticking points were what to do when approaching a yellow light, and the safe distance to maintain behind another car."

According to a GMAC press release, New Jersey drivers finished 51st in the survey, with an average score of just 69.9 percent.  Almost 37 percent of New Jersey drivers failed the test.  Kansas drivers did the best.  The average score in that state was 84 out of 100, and only 5.7 percent of Kansas drivers failed.  GMAC also notes, "The older the driver, the higher the test score. Drivers 35+ years old were most likely to pass," and, "While average test scores between the genders were similar, women were more likely to fail the test than men (20 percent versus 13 percent).""

The ten lowest-scoring states, according to GMAC:

1. New Jersey

2. Washington, DC

3. New York

4. Massachusetts

5. Georgia

6. Mississippi

7. Hawaii

8. Lousiana

9. West Virginia

10. Maryland

BTW, there is a link to take the same test: http://www.gmacinsurance.com/SafeDriving/

I got a 90%, missed the ones about passing on the right and how to handle a solid yellow light.  Oh well.

I missed the question about the yellow light, though in looking at the online driver's manual for my state just now, my answer was not incorrect.  Though I agree that the "correct" answer on the test was also correct.

Yeah, generally I thought that a solid yellow meant to prepare for a red, i.e. slow down and prepare to stop, not stop immediately.

The one about passing on the right... I knew you could pass on the right if there was room and someone was turning left, but I wasn't sure if it was otherwise technically legal to overtake on the right when on a multilane road, just not enforced.  Turns out it's alright after all then?

The only thing I've noticed about "your" drivers is that they tend to camp the left lane, but then again do does everyone else in nearly every other state.

I have never seen such aggressive driving as I did in Boston. I thought New York was bad...unitl I visited my dad's friends in Andover. The drivers in Boston where the absolute worst I've ever seen. People don't just cut you off, they practically merge right into you and force you to move.

It was insane.

I know I'm not the one to talk about bad driving, but damn. MA drivers were awful. Here in Cali, people just drive fast. Make that SoKal. Here in the Bay Area, everyone drives pretty slow. In L.A/O.C, if there's no traffic, it's Nascar. Through O.C on the toll road or I-5 from the power plant north through Torrance on the 405 has the fastest drivers I've seen anywhere. 85 is the speed of traffic. haha

Interesting.  I never found Boston drivers to be any worse than anyplace else, but I don't drive in Boston that much.  I've generally parked the car on the perimeter and gotten around on foot.

I have to say BenzBoy, you probably single-handedly brought California down a few spots in the rankings with your ditzy chick style of driving..... :evildude:

Exaggerate much? Most of the time, I'm just sneaking past the flow of traffic at 75. Norcal drivers are just annoyingly slow; they'll barely peek above the speed limit. Lame.

Then again, I'm not fortunate enough to be out on the freeway when noone else is, during daylight hours. But even late at night, the few cars on the freeway aren't really going that fast

Yeah- I missed that one to 3 seconds isn't enough time to be "safe" in most cases.  Maybe in areas where speed limits are lower but certainly not where it's 55 or higher.

I disagree, MA drivers are my heros.  They know where they are going and they GTFO of the way.  Almost everyone speeds, so the flow of traffic is superb.  And if you need to get into another lane you simply do it.  People slow down to let you in and then work it out without fussing like folks do here, because they are actually paying attention to the road; basically they take it seriously as opposed to the assholes everywhere else.

What?  I count to three-one-thousand behind a car at 80mph and I am literally 5 or more car lengths behind them.  That's a lot of space.

I'll have to test it out sometime to make sure.  But even 2 seconds gives me a ton of reaction time, again because I am paying attention to the road.

Then again, the way others drive I wish they would count to 10 instead lol, while they fuck with their iPuds.

If the light's out of commission, the intersection is supposed to default to an all-way stop, IIRC.

While New Jersey drivers don't deserve a pass, our state has some of the strangest obstacles on our roadways that you simply don't find anywhere else. For example, for several decades turning lanes were outlawed, and traffic was redirected through half-circles called "jug handles" to make a turn - sometimes two at a time to make a complete U-Turn. Then, in some areas, they got rid of the circles and made strange traffic light patterns that had traffic flowing forward, left, right and in up to two diagonal directions all at once.

Most New Jersey drivers just got with the flow of things and try to stay alive rather than pay much attention to official rules.

I suspect most people know what to do. Their hesitation probably results from them being afraid the other person doesn't know.  I know when I come to that situation I don't assume everybody else understands you take turns.  I make damn sure some bozo isn't going to jump out there when I'm suppose to be going.

No it's not.  Using only your fog lights means you have no taillights and side marker lights on.  In the fog you want to see and be seen.

Yes, New Jersey roads are ridiculous.  I remember driving someone from Jersey around who was shocked to see me make a left turn.  He'd never seen it done before.

Still a stupid question.

I got the one about the diamond shaped sign wrong. It was really late and I was tired, so I was thinking triangular...

It's like a permit test question, they're meant to trick you.

Yeah, Jersey has its jughandles, where you get in the right lane, turn right into the jughandle to circle around and cross again to make your left turn. MD drivers have decided that that's too complex and takes too much time, so they merely turn left from the right hand lane across in front of you (and conversely, take a "free right" from the left turn lane...) Considering I've seen them do both in front of police officers with no repercussions, I'm going to have to assume that it's in the manual somewhere... lol!

When I was in MD, I stuck to the highways.  The drivers there seemed fine!  DC was the worst part of that trip.

Through O.C on the toll road or I-5 from the power plant north through Torrance on the 405 has the fastest drivers I've seen anywhere. 85 is the speed of traffic. haha

No lie... I-95 just north of Baltimore I gradually incresed my cruise control to 90mph and was still getting passed by just about everyone

I had to look that up on Wiki to work out what on earth you were talking about. A bit like a Melbourne hook-turn with its own slip-lane, it seems. I'd imagine the hook-turn is far more hilarious when you do it the first few times, though, because all the action takes place right in the middle of the intersection.

For those playing at home, a hook-turn for those driving on the right looks like this:

Parked at the front of the queue waiting to turn is always fun when cars pull up inches away from the driver's door.

I mean, who in their right mind thinks cutting across two lanes of traffic to make a left turn is a good idea? I could see this being necessary in places with trams/trolleys in the middle lanes, but for regular old car traffic? Dumb.

People around here constantly bitch about our road system, but given the alternatives I think we're doing just fine.

The map leaves out one crucial part - the tramline running down the centre lanes of the road. The idea is that the tram does not have to wait for drivers banked up in the left lane waiting to turn left, so instead drivers wait on the right and proceed once the light on the left goes green. Once all cars have turned, the east-west traffic crosses as usual.

It's only found on Melbourne CBD intersections with tramlines on the centre lanes.

If you're making a left turn you stay in the right lane, pull into the intersection when you have a green light, sit and wait in front of traffic to your right, and then pull a sharp left when the lights change and the traffic on the road you're turning onto has a green.

I understand why they'd do it: if you have two lanes the traffic in the left lane can proceed straight through and is never slowed by people waiting to turn. It must make turning an incredible chore though.

We use one-way streets here instead. That way there are two lanes of free-flowing traffic in the middle and the two outside lanes are used for turning.

Doesn't that make right (left in OZ) turns really difficult at times?

There are only 20-ish such intersections in the middle of Melbourne and one in Adelaide (for buses only), so as long as you know that you're coming up to a hook-turn intersection and stay close to the kerbside, all you're really doing is making the same turn from a bit further over than normal.

In the suburbs, it's every man and tram for himself:

Yeah- I missed that one to 3 seconds isn't enough time to be "safe" in most cases.  Maybe in areas where speed limits are lower but certainly not where it's 55 or higher.

Actually, they use the 3 second rule as opposed to a distance because 3 seconds changes distance depending on how fast you're going. But yes, in theory, your car should be able to brake as fast as the car in front of you. That gives you a 3 second window of time to hit your brakes after you see the brake lights of the car in front of you.

I also missed the question about passing on the right. [Spoiler] I thought it was technically illegal to pass on the right, but I guess not.

Oh, BTW, that with me learning to drive in the #47 state. I'm actually a bit surprised we're that low. Sure there are a lot of idiots out there, but I always figured there were idiots everywhere. It's good for me thought - if I can drive in Atlanta, I can drive pretty much anywhere.

and yeah, it's pretty common that the flow of traffic in Atlanta is 85-90. I love it.
