Title: Hachi Roku
Post by: Rich on June 26, 2017, 07:30:05 PM

I picked it up on Memorial Day. It's like a dream being able to tear down the Miata and really get after it without needing to drive it. It's also nice having a car I can redline without worry or abandon.

Pros:
Steering feel
LED headlights
Tach front and center
Cheap as fuck
Decent shifter
Great seat bolsters

Has a drivers info center, remote unlock, steering wheel audio controls, rear seats (that fold, too!), Bluetooth phone use.... all the shit you guys are probably used to that I haven't had for 5 years.

Cons
Throttle calibration/tuning needs help. It's an on/off switch
The shifter is notchy on the 5 to 4 downshift
It looks like a fat cockroach from anything other than the front

Bottom line:
Pretty much the deal of a century for someone that loves driving and can only get a single car on a budget. In a lot of ways it feels like a RWD version of my 2005 Cooper S with more power up top. It's just fun. And it was less out the door than that Cooper s was too.

What's the power like? Most people always put the car down because it's "so underpowered with only 200-horsepower"...

It feels decent enough for me. I enjoy the powerband, it's reminiscent of a Honda. It's take until about 4-5k rpm then starts screaming to redline.

People complain that it's slow but it's faster than an RX-8 5-60 and I get 34mpg on the highway

I gotta ask, what'd you get it for out the door?  I still miss mine a little bit.  Mostly just the looks of it. I always thought they're really good looking cars.  I loved the interior on mine too.

Exactly, and I find it hard to call anything with 200-horsepower slow. Have fun with the new ride!  :ohyeah:

Agreed.

I really need to drive one of these.  I'll have to see if someone will let me take theirs for a fun run at an auto-x sometime.  I think if they had been available back when I bought my previous Mustang, I probably would have bought one instead of the Stang.  Very much reminded me of my S13 240SX.  I liked everything about the RX-8 except for the tiny trunk (and no folding rear seat) and the horrendous fuel economy.  These address both gripes.  Granted, I did sit in an early model Scion when they first came out and was not impressed with the interior.  The Mustang, for the same money, was much nicer in that regard.  Newer Frisbees fixed most of my interior gripes.

It's sometimes required by some performance driving orgs for safety reasons.  I remember there being some discussion at an auto-x last year between safety stewards about whether windows had to be open.  One person insisted they had to be, possibly based on SCCA trackday rules.

Yes.  Eighty six is "hachi-jū roku".  The basics of Japanese numbers 11-99 is the amount of 10s (jū) and then the extra.  Hachi is 8.  Jū is 10.  Roku is 6.  So 86 is eight tens and six.  Hachi-jū roku.

(You may also see juu or jū; I've seen both)

10K/6 month update:

I did pretty terrible at a local autocross.  I'm interested in getting another set of wheels with the slipperiest all seasons for DD use, and some Potenza RE71Rs on the stock wheels for D Street class SOLO.

The calibration of the throttle is still very annoying.  The first 10% of pedal travel gives you 50% throttle, 50% travel is 90% throttle.

No hiccups yet.  The LED headlights are a blessing and make the Miata's halogens seem dangerous.

I'd like to get some white racing strips and tint along with the aforementioned wheels.  Maybe Gramlights 57C

Looking to do a track day at Roebling Road in GA, VIR, and get on Road Atlanta also (which should have a TNiA next year).

Drive by wire.  If you want to change the throttle calibration, you need to flash the control module.

There HAS to be a way to put a damper on that but it would likely require too much tinkering. It's really obnoxious. You could never jam the gas on that van, it would spin the tires every time. You had to start off slow and gradually apply more pressure.

I'm pretty sure it's so people shopping would think  "WOW THIS THING HAS SO MUCH POWAH!!!!!!!!!" but really really hated it.

There's no mechanical fix.  And providing the sensation that the car is quicker is why it's done.  There's a popular mod called PedalMax, IIRC, that a lot of the Mustang guys get that steepens the throttle curve.  Several, who don't understand what the mod does, think it gives the car more power.  All it does is reprogram the controller to open the throttle more with less pedal application.  Apparently people are too lazy to put the pedal to the floor to get WOT.

Some vehicles are poorly calibrated.  Most of my cars have been DBW.  No complaints other than some delay/hang when lifting (which is more of an emissions control "feature" than poor design).

I used more Bluetooth audio

Why would an iPhone 6s sound worse with a lightning cable than USB?

It sounds the same both ways in the Miata

The car has TPMS sensors, but the car only uses a dummy light on the dash.  I can't read individual temperatures.

I've learned something interesting.

The sensors actually read tire pressure and temperature!  I'm going to see what kind of solution I can get so I can see this data in the car.  As of right now, it looks like the best bet would be an openflash tablet and to edit a ROM.  Which might be good to recalibrate the throttle also.  But I'll wait until the car is out of warranty and maybe even after that.

I'd like something like an OBD2 adapter that could read this data to my phone (or in the future, to a new head unit), but this data is hiding within the ECU/CANBUS (I have no idea what this would be called) that I don't think the OBD2 can get to.

I only went down this rabbit hole since I'll be buying some new wheels and tires for daily use, and new tires for stock wheels for AutoX.  The TPMS sensors are outrageously expensive, I figured to pay for their additional cost I'm going to need to get some information from them if I'm going to pony up to keep TPMS sensors around.

PLX makes several adapters that will BT connect to any phone, but some of the more specialized OBDII data needs proprietary software to interpret. You could also use a program like Hyperterminal to access data from thhe bus directly, but you'll have to figure out which node is the TPMS adapter and what the raw data means

Soup is right, a lot of that stuff is proprietary. You'd probably need a Toyota-specific tech tool. (What's the equivalent of a GM Tech II for Toyota?)

Torque Pro can do it; look under settings and "manage extra PIDs." I don't know about regular torque, but there seems to be an add-on in Dash Command (another app) that claims to do it.

Also, new wheels and tires will be happening

The stock wheels are getting RE71's strictly for DS class SOLO

What should the new DD wheels be?  What tire? Stay stock 17" sizes?  Go wider?  Go 18"?

Stock size + more aggressive offset + stickier tires. No need to overdo it

Depends on the tire.  Pirelli says don't drive at temperatures under 40F or else risk cracking the compound.  I think Michelin and Continental say 20 or 25 F for their hi-po street tires (PSS type, not the 200TW autocross gumballs and R Comps).  They all start getting noticably greasy under 50F until you've driven a bit to get some heat in them.

RE-71R for autox and BFG Comp 2 A/S for the street is a good mix. The BFGs have plenty of grip in all temperatures for street driving.

Some of the post 2016 Toyotas seem to have the TPMS connected to the BCM bus and not the ECU bus, which would complicate things.

My winter tires are all seasons and I have a separate set of summer tires for, well, the summer.  Not sure how the BRZ is in the snow, but the Civic has no issues handling Chicago winters in A/S.  FWIW, they are the Pilot Sport A/S.

The plan is to put RE71 Tires on these wheels and when the stock tires wear out from DDing, put some Michelin pilot sport a/s on those.

I'd love to get some 17x9 concave wheels but cost, weight, tramlining, noise, and gas mileage factored into bailing on that

I think the stock wheels are 7".  I don't think a 245 will readily fit.  I think 235 is about as wide as the wheel will accommodate.

Dropped the hammer on 16x7 +46 TE37s in white.  11.5lbs vs 21lbs for the stock wheels.  They will be getting RE71s for AutoX.  About the time the RE71s wear out, the stock tires should be toast from DDing.  The TE37s will then go for DD duty (wheel weights make a lick of difference on track, but should be much more noticeable on street).  I don't think I'll like the white so I might get  them powdercoated then too.

I've toyed with the idea of rear louvers on the Mustang.  1970s retro chic.  I think they'd actually annoy me, though, in the same way that I don't like seeing a wing in my view when I look through the rearview.

Also, an added PITA to have to take them off every time you want to clean your rear window.

I kind of like the look, and I've heard it's much cooler inside the car.  Which is great for the SC heat.

If I don't get this I'll get tint... and I don't like the way tint looks on top of the defroster lines and the window border fade in.

Depends on how much pollen and dust is in the air where you are.  I'm sure you recall how bad the springtime tree pollen is up here.  Morning dew will tend to make it cling to the glass and not come off without spraying it with a hose or wiping it down.
Title: Re: Hachi Roku
Post by: AutobahnSHO on April 28, 2018, 08:00:02 AM
Spraying it off should be enough for dirt and pollen down there. The dirt is 'sandy' anyway.

I can totally believe it would cool the car off! that's a biiiig rear window.

I had a shop tint my Legacy and the rear looked fine, they got it nice on the defroster lines so you didn't even see any air gap.

If you don't want the 5.0 for whatever reason (even if you don't care about the power, it gets better fuel economy than the old 4.6), I'd be looking for a 2010 (sans PP if you don't want the stiffer suspension) instead of the '05-'09.  That way you get the way better interior and a revised chassis tuning, and IMO the best looking of the S197 body styles.  I very seriously considered a leftover '09 GT at one point but could not get past the interior (it was a base model, and it was awful).  2010 was such a huge improvement in interior.

I find the late 00's Mustang beautiful. The way that fastback roofline flows into the trunk. The sound it makes. I need to drive one. I've only ever driven one new. We'll see how an older one does. I also may not do it due to losing the LED headlights. They are wonderful.

Maybe you just need a Triumph TR8. It's as fast as a worn out Miata, sounds like a Mustang, handles like a lowered pickup truck, looks like a space ship, and will give you plenty of quality under-the-hood time. Not boring.
