Say Hello To The Long-Awaited BMW Z4 Concept

The first images of BMW's much-hyped Z4 Concept have just emerged online, shortly before the vehicle's world debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

The German marque has yet to release official details about the sports car concept but yesterday we learnt that the car does indeed preview the next-generation Z4. If the production car looks anything like the concept, BMW has a winner on its hands.

The concept has been finished in a unique matte orange color and rolls on a set of silver and black wheels. Additionally, it adopts a pointed front end with an angular kidney grille, a pair of large air intakes and aggressive headlights with incorporated LED daytime running lights.

The rear is also particularly impressive and includes small silver buttresses behind both head rests, curvaceous taillights and dual tailpipes painted silver. This being a concept, the wing mirrors and windscreen surround are both stupendously thin.

Stay tuned for more details as the day progresses.

Does anyone know what I saw the other day? I thought BMW is getting rid of the 6er, and this is too huge for a Z4. Could it be the 8-Series?

Some nice design cues, but goddamn those fucking high beltlines. Makes the car look heavy and out of sync with the svelte windshield. Digging the interior, but not the mis-matched seats.

Ok.

And this? Is this the upcoming Toyota Supra that's being developed together with BMW? Saw both of these cars on the same day at BMW Welt | BMW Museum.  :mask:

Apparently, yes. Which is curious, because no way could you get your arm up like that on the Bimmer (as the concept currently stands).

The tall beltline and strong wedge (upward sweep) from front to rear reminds me of the SLK.

Looks really good. Hopefully they bring the driving fun back, as well as the lighter + cheaper ragtop.

Curious to see what engine they use in the Supra and if it's gonna be a 2+2. I don't think the Supra will come with a manual though.

Believe Toyota has already confirmed the Supra will be auto-only.  Wouldn't surprise me if it was also a hybrid.

This is confirmed to be ragtop, so it should be a lot lighter than the last one. Drinig fun is the key question. apparently no ///M version is planned, but if they get the basic chassis right, a 40i version would be more than powerful enough.

Looks good IMHO. Will be interested to see exactly how it translates to production.

That being said I expect it will be ridiculously expensive (on par or higher than the Boxster).

Real life pic. Unless that guy is huge, I think this car is definitely less bloated than the last one. I am liking the size a lot.

Not bloated?! The door sills basically intersect with the driver's head; what's up with that?

If we're lucky, they may offer both a non-hybrid and a hybrid version (like the Lexus LC).  But given that Toyota feels the need to Hybridize practically everything they sell, and will certainly want to do so with their halo car, I'll be stunned if there isn't a hybrid Supra.

Hybridization can be OK if done right.

I would prefer hybridization + NA to turbocharging, as long as the weight can be kept under control.

Sure, but not if it's using Toyota's ubiquitous Synergy drive.  I do not want a CVT in my sports car.  Nor do I want that Frankenstein drivetrain from the LC Hybrid where they took the Synergy Drive CVT and tacked a traditional 4AT to the back of it to mimic real gears.

How does that work?

Like other drivetrains that use secondary gearboxes on the output of the primary (e.g. 10-15 speed semis with 2-3 spd secondary boxes, or a 4WD with a 2-speed transfer case).

In normal mode, it drives like a CVT, but the second box can expand the ratio band of the CVT (allowing the electric motors to turn at lower RPMs in all-electric mode).  In sport mode, the secondary box allows for shifts that feel more like a "normal" multi-speed gearbox and is supposed to remove the rubber band feeling associated with CVTs.

These give a little more explanation:

Nope, because someone will usually have shot these cars before me and sold them to the magazines. The few times I tried to sell them I've been told that someone already sent them the shots of this/these car(s).

I've heard that there are literally spy photographers who camp out at the Nürburgring (or at the gates of BMWs Skunk Works) just to get the first shots of some prototype and then sell it to a magazine. ;)
