Title: Tuner Car revival? M2 Competition MPE parts catalog
Post by: r0tor on May 06, 2018, 02:05:49 PM
I'm not sure I have seen an accessories catalog this big since the tuner car days 15+ years ago...  Coilovers, exhaust, wheels, brakes, carbon fiber body panels.  It's like fast and the furious all over again !

Probably $20+ k of shit here... https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1492934

Maybe this is what is needed to get people interested in cars again?  If so I'm all for it :hmm:

Frankly, I was surprised by this too. It's amazing, you can basically build an M2 CSL a la carte.

I love the carbon roof & hood, brakes, exhaust and rims. A manual M2 CS + all that would be great.

Oh, those don't count. It only counts if its a fad, not something people have been doing forever and shows no signs stopping.

I think it would be a good business move to move these parts further down the model range - I really think it could drive new car sales to the customization market like the Wrangler currently has or the tuner craze drove.

People already tune cars. I guess having it be BMW branded makes it more palatable for some, but that markup is gonna be crazy.

So all those carbon fiber parts are going to shave what, 10lbs off for 10 grand?

15-20 years ago though manugacturure backed tuning was a thing.  Mazda had a Mazdaspeed catalog for every car they produced in the early 2000s.  I believe Nismo had similar things and well Honda had more then enough.

Today not so much...

I'd like to see what BMW is doing brought back and get people excited about owning cars again.

Taking away the manual.

People are excited about owning cars. The automotive aftermarket is robust. I don't see this song much for the market, but it's cool that BMW is doing this anyway.

Taking away the manual.

At this point, I think the only market that is actually keeping the manual alive and well is the USDM.

No way, most rental cars in Europe have 3 pedals. You can barely buy a stick car here

In most of Europe, the manual transmission is there as a budget option.  An automatic is something like 1.5/2K euros extra depending on model.  Believe me, 99% of Europeans aren't choosing the 3 pedals cause they actually care for it.

It's the budget option because it's the default choice. Kind of like how it's cheaper to give every car power windows instead of losing money trying to mix and match

That argument makes no sense and is in no way comparable.  The manual transmission take rate in the UK is plummeting as the price difference between getting the stick and the auto becomes moot.  Also, major city centers are outlawing petrol and all these electric cars that will replace them will be auto only.  Again, Europe is not buying a manual cause it wants to, its buying it cause it can't afford not to.

I suppose electric cars count as "auto" but that's just because they only have 1 gear and don't have to idle at 800 rpm while stopped. You'd be just as correct in calling it a 1 speed manual. I've driven my El Camino around town with no clutch and only staying in 1st gear.

Due to the US market as the manual take rate is over 60% last I read
