I take that back - looks like the Audi does have four chains.

The Ford doesn't look simpler to me. In fact having those two "main" chains without active tensioning looks a bit sketchy.

Remember, this version of the Audi 4.2 had the chains on the rear of the motor, so you're seeing stuff that has to be there such as sensors, water ports, starter motor.
You don't see the tensioners?

C'mon man, you think the Ford guys are idiots? It not only looks way simpler, it IS way simpler. I'm sure they also engineered in chain tensioning.

And the Audi guys are idiots? Ze Germans have always struggled with motors - particularly, in matching the lowly GM pooprod - but they're not idiots.

The Coyote is a variant of the DOHC Modular, which is ~25 years old. Things have progressed since then. Pretty much any DOHC vee motor these days - Nissan VQ, GM 3.6L, Toyota 3.6L, Ford 3.5L, etc. - uses three chains.

BMW S65 V8 (N/A 4.0L in the E9x M3) uses two chains - though it is a bit of a cheat as the intake cam is geared to the exhaust cam:

One uses gears, the Coyote uses simple chains to connect the cams. Still vastly simpler and more robust than the Audi mill.

If that bottom chain serves the same purpose as the one on the Audi motor, that's still three.
It does still look vastly more elegant.

Now, this is a pretty impressive set of timing gears...

The Audi system is driving a second device (center of the block), probably an oil pump. You see it here because the Audi timing chain is on the rear of the block.

I think you're getting taken in with all the different colors.

Either way, a bit of Googling shows that Audi has since gone to a two chain system (remember that the S4 V8 is ~15 years old now), at least for the V6:

The lower chain connects to the variable timing actuator.

Beautiful car and a decent price. It's not a driver's car though, and the novelty wears off pretty quick.

Really?  I've never driven one, but I've heard good things.

It's not loading for me. What is it?

EDIT: Finally did. Vipers are cool. Seem like a lot of noise for a car that's ultimately not as good as a contemporary Corvette.

I put almost 1000 kms on brother's 2008 GTS. It's harsh and hairy. Yes it's fun to drive for awhile, but a driver of an S2000 or Boxster would know what I mean immediately.

Also, put aside $2000+ for tires each year, insurance is eye-watering for a Viper, and it's a very thirsty car.

MrH

Yikes.  That's some expensive tires.
