Friend bought an SV650 as his first bike.

That seals it. I'm keeping a motorcycle of some sort now, whether it's the Fireblade, a Grom, or something in between.

Rode the Sportster into work this morning. Nothing like a bike to blow around the slower traffic. Split.up to the light, take off like a bat out of hell when it turns green. :ohyeah:

I want a v twin sports bike just to idle and rev in my driveway. But I think I want a triple to actually ride.

Good for him/her, SV650 is a solid bike at any end of the riding experience spectrum.

Yeah, it's a solid beginner bike. He got the S with the half fairing,  which I've ridden before and it to be way more uncomfortable than my 954.

I also rode a Daytona a few weeks ago. Damn that triple makes Yamaha's triple feel like a tractor engine. So damn smooth! The ergos are terrible for me though, but I'd love a round eye Street Triple some day.

Right now I'm torn between selling my bike for a Grom, getting another SM, or just keeping my bike. The problem with my bike is I'm no where near skilled enough to ride it in the twisties, while I'm fairly sure I could drag knee on a Grom. The problem with a Grom is it's pretty limiting since I can't really go on the freeway, and group rides would be a problem...

I would think you'd find a Grom really cramped.

What about an R3 or 300 Ninja.  I think Honda offers the CB300 if you don't want sport bike ergonomics.

Eh, none of the 300s interest me other than the RC390, and that I'm still unsure of the reliability. Plus, if I get a 250 I'd rather get a supermoto and save the weight.

I'm going to check out a Grom this week. Honestly with a bit of work and like <$100 the 954 would look pretty good, so it's tempting to just stick with it. I love it on the highway.

Grom is definitely cramped. I'd go supermoto if I were you. Best of all worlds.

I already had the WR250X. It was terrible on the highway, but doable. Maybe I'll try a DRZ.

I don't see my 36" inseam fitting well on a Grom.

Bro, there is a pretty wide gamut of bikes between a 954 and a Grom

What was wrong with the F4i? That seems to be a perfect fit for you. Don't get a Street Triple, I want to be the first.

Grom would be fun for dicking around and shorter rides, but it's definitely not a commuter or traveler.

F4i is too cramped. I rode a friend's F4i after I got my 954 and it was noticeably more uncomfortable. No joke, the 954 is the most comfortable sport bike I've ever ridden. I've done 250+ miles in a single shot (only stopping for gas) and had no cramps or issues afterwards. Plus, the 954 is like a big block F4i. Same weight but about 55-60 more HP.

Even after putting different bars and lower pegs on the F4i I felt it wasn't that comfortable.

As for the Street Triple, maybe I'll rage buy this just to spite you:

Well, I rode a Grom.

I have a dilemma. I really want one, but don't think I can do one as an only bike.

Wat do...

I feel like you could build a Grom with lawnmower parts. What is the appeal?

Don't get a Grom if it's your only bike. I guarantee you'll regret it later on.

I don't fully understand the appeal, either.  I do, but I don't.  If I'm gonna ride something small and slow, it's gonna be comfortable, like a scooter.  I'd rather have a 125cc scooter than a Grom, even if it's not as "cool."

Grom also has a multi-gear transmission and manual clutch instead of a centrifugal auto clutch and CVT.

I think the appeal is similar to the pitbike movement, where people buy cheap, 50-100cc minibikes and hop them up and race them.

Yeah they're like the pit bikes of the street. Fun toys...but not so good at daily driving.

Nah, the pitbike fad started with motocross mechanics using 50cc Honda minibike to get around the paddock and facility.  Being pro bike mechanics, they started hopping them up (bored out engines, hotter cams, upgraded suspensions, manual clutch conversions, etc) and then started racing each other to see who had the fastest pitbike.  Some of these bikes ended up being as fast and capable as dedicated MX bikes when they were done, which is impressive considering they started with a cheap, slow, 2-3 hp minibike intended for 5-8 year old beginning riders (my first dirtbike was a Honda 50).  My brother got into it for a short time.  Bought a 100cc Kawi trail bike and hopped up the engine and converted it to manual clutch and I think heavier springs.  It went from like 8 hp to like 20+, which is a lot on a minibike's wheelbase.  I rode it once and it was pretty snotty.

I pulled onto the freeway outside of Los Angeles a couple of years ago right into a group of bikes like that. The majority of them were just along for the ride but there were a number of them riding in an unsafe manner. Overall, that many bikes in one area splitting lanes and weaving in and out of traffic does not make for a safe environment.

CaminoRacer

I don't do rides like that, for that reason. Something about big groups makes people turn off their brain and do the stupidest stuff.
