Well, first actual $ repair will be happening this week. Looks like the radiator got a small crack in the plastic side tank, so a new one has been ordered ($163.00) as well as a pair of hoses for it.

I swear, BMW sees these things as standard wear items.

According to an E46 owner I'm friends with, the radiator is a wear item with a recommended replacement interval.

Ok, got the new radiator installed today. Took about an hour, so I changed the oil as well.

Well, it's been 2 1/2 years with the car and since February, I've replaced a window regulator and the rear wheel well liners (that had become brittle and age cracked). I've got 175k on it as a daily driver now (especially after the road trip to upstate NY over Thanksgiving). I notice a lot of the pictures earlier in the thread have gone away...

Here it is now:

Still looking good.  :ohyeah:

Such a great car design.

These are getting to the age now where I notice when one is in good condition and on the road. Yours is still looking great.

Been like that for me for a decade.

Well, it's now coming up on 3 years ownership and no new news since the last update other than it's now at about 180k miles and I've been all over with it. Went out to the BMW CCA Chapterfest at Summit Point WV, on a club tour of the backroads of western MD/VA/WV for a few hours before arriving for the event at Summit Point. Never skipped a beat. SO much fun in the twisties keeping up with the smaller cars. Then on the way home, it started to rain. :( Still, in the rain and filthy it looks good.

I agree. I turn my head whenever I see one of these. Such beautiful cars.

But I think I'd take an E39 over one.

Man, I can't even remember the last time I saw an E38.

It may just be my opinion but I think the E38 is being kept longer then the E65, which seem to have disappeared.

I had an E39.  I love that vintage of BMW.

E38, along with the E39, was the zenith of BMW design language.  The proportions were just bang-on.

Man, I can't even remember the last time I saw an E38.

I'm on the FB group E38 Empire and man, you'd think there were more of these cars around than when they were new. There are over 10k owners on that group, most with customized versions.

When we have our meets, it's a sea of them...

I have local mini meets just for the ones here in Baltimore, and tend to get 20+ cars at a time, but there are hundreds who aren't part of the club...

Go to NY and NJ and you get hundreds at a meet. Yet if I got to a BMW CCA meet, I'm usually the only 7 there.

3+ years on and my car ADD got the best of me. After finding my old Volt and buying it back, the E38 had to go. It was wearing out faster than I want on the commute, but with another daily driver it was not going to get used hardly at all (no winter use and I have the convertible for weekends and fun drives). So I sold it to an enthusiast who will use it properly. He got a great deal and I will now front the cost of a level 2 charger for the Volt (which will get mostly rebated to me by the electric company).

At some point in the future I will be back in an E38, though I think I'll go with a 750iL as I've never had a V12 car.

Very practical decision but I don't think I could do it.

Sad to see it go. Its a beautiful car.

I agonized over the decision for a week or two, trying to find a logical reason to keep it, too. But once I'm not commuting in it (12 miles a day round trip, 3-4 days a week), it just wasn't going to get used on a regular basis, and parking it and insuring it for a very rare use was just not feasible.
