Facelifted Citroen C4 Cactus Could Ditch Airbumps

Citroen's funky-looking crossover, the C4 Cactus, is currently in its third year, meaning that the French manufacturer is prepping a midlife facelift.

Expected to debut soon, the updated model will bring more than just a new face, new rear end, and tweaks made throughout the cabin, as it's also believed to ditch its famous Airbumps, reports AutoExpress.

Such a move might seem bold, although it does make sense as the current Cactus will be moved from its current position after the introduction of the new C3 AirCross and C5 Aircross, earlier this year.

The latter two are in charge of fulfilling the company's need for SUVs, while the C4 Cactus should transform into a hatch, probably sitting alongside the ageing C4.

"The C4 Cactus is about ready for its midlife change, and will evolve slightly. The way that we will change it will mean that it will fit even better into the core model strategy. You know, at Citroen we never do anything conventional", Citroen CEO Linda Jackson told the British publication.

"We want to give a successor, but we want to show it in coherence with the current strategy, to be bold, to be efficient in terms of comfort. We will reveal it in less than a year", added Peugeot planning chief, Xavier Peugeot.

The bumps gave it character. I'd think it would make the most sense to at least keep them optional.

Agreed. A C4 Cactus without air bumps appear naked; there's something missing from it. And I know we think this because we're used to seeing it with air bumps.

Did the air bumps have any real aerodynamic advantage or are they really just for looks?

I suspect that if they are any use it would only be to protect the sides from doors slamming into them.

They're for looks and also door protection (as Citroen claims in their advertising). Check out this funny C4 Cactus ad.
