2018 Mazda CX-8 Unveiled With A Diesel Engine

Mazda has introduced the new CX-8 in Japan.

Set to become the brand's domestic flagship crossover, the model adopts a stylish KODO design which was created to "look both timeless and edgy" so it will "continue to excite owners even after many years."

The entry-level model comes nicely equipped with LED headlights and 17-inch aluminum wheels. The range-topping variant goes even further as it boasts LED fog lights, bright roof rails, and 19-inch alloy wheels.

Overall, the CX-8 measures 4,900mm (192.9 inches) long, 1,840mm (72.4 inches) wide, and 1,730mm (68.1 inches) tall. This means the model is about 165mm (6.5 inches) shorter and 130mm (5.1 inches) narrower than the CX-9 which isn't offered in Japan.

The interior features a three-spoke steering wheel, metallic trim, and an infotainment system with a seven-inch display. The model also has three rows of seats which offer seating for up to seven people. In terms of storage, the boot holds 239 liters (8.4 cubic feet) of luggage but that can be expanded to 572 liters (20.2 cubic feet) by folding down the third row.

A variety of different options will be available and the top of the line CX-8 has Nappa leather upholstery and real wood trim. Customers can also order rear captain chairs which are separated by a center console with USB charging ports.

A 2.2-liter SKYACTIV-D diesel engine resides under the hood and produces 187 hp (140 kW) and 331 lb-ft (450 Nm of torque). It is connected to a six-speed automatic transmission which can be paired to available all-wheel drive system.

Mazda is currently accepting orders and a launch is scheduled for December 14th. Prices range from ¥3,196,800 to ¥4,190,400 including tax.

It's redundant as hell for markets like the US. It's basically a narrow-body CX-9.

Oh lawd, 331 lb*ft from a 4 cylinder. :vapors:

The Focus RS makes 350 lb-ft out of a similarly sized gas engine.  That engine, detuned to run on regular unleaded for the EB Mustang, still manages 320.
