Next-Gen BMW 2-Series Coupe And Cabrio To Remain RWD

Although the next-generation BMW 1-Series will switch to front-wheel drive, the automaker has confirmed to press at the Frankfurt Motor Show that the next two-door models of the 2-Series will retain its rear-wheel drive setup.

During a discussion with Motoring, BMW board member for development Dr Klaus Frolich said it only makes sense for the 2-Series (including of course, the M2) to remain rear driven.

"I think it (M2) is such a good car, it has such a success in the market, we can't make enough cars and we are running out of engines at the moment. I think it would be a very good idea to continue that legacy (current 2 Series)," he said.

Responding to the confirmation given by his colleague, BMW Australia boss Marc Werner expressed his delight about the carmaker's decision.

"As far as rear-wheel drive is concerned, you heard it from the horse's mouth today, so that's interesting. If that's going to happen I think it's the right way forward," he said.

The new 2-Series is expected to launch in 2020 but before it arrives, the next-generation 1-Series will hit the market. It will be underpinned by the automaker's UKL platform and therefore switch from RWD to FWD.

It would have been simple for BMW to use the same platform in the new two-door 2-Series (as it does on today's 2-Series Active Tourer models) but we can't imagine anyone complaining about RWD remaining.

Thank goodness, that was about to be the stupidest move this side of the Cygnet. Even worse really as that car was a joke meant to game the regs, and BMW actually wants to sell cars.
As I write, highly civilized human beings are flying overhead, trying to kill me.

Depending on price, that could be a good deal.

I've always been surprised that BMW makes the 2 series at all, to be honest.

So we have reached a new low point in BMW naming where a model number no longer even corresponds to a chassis

I was reminiscing on my E60 535i Sport test drive and said "I wonder how much the F10 weighs". F10 535i is like 400lb heavier than the E60. What the hell is going on at BMW

This car will be a direct competitor to the CLA and the A3 and both of those sell well. The Coupe also sells well enough.

I meant the regular 2 coupe.

I don't understand the aversion to a FWD based 2GC.

The 4GC is auto only, and doesn't come in M trim. Sells by the boatload.

Also this 2GC follows the new naming convention; it's a more Rakish version of the new FWD 1 sedan.

I'm really surprised the 2 coupe lasted as long as it has. Limited body style, small size, weird pricing.

It's gorgeous and feels worth the asking price. BMW may pull an A3 but their track record indicates this will be closer to the CLA (bad)

Practically speaking, the only advantage the 3 has is the bigger back seat. The 2 actually has a (slightly) bigger trunk... though I was surprised to see that the 335i is only 20lb heavier than the M235i. If it was my $$$ I'd do the 3 but the 2 absolutely has its charms

BMW CLA

I've driven a CLA! It's perfectly fine. A lot of the issues with the car lie with the shit ride and crappy inforainment; two things BMW actually exclels at.

It's gorgeous and feels worth the asking price. BMW may pull an A3 but their track record indicates this will be closer to the CLA (bad)

It looks like a weird 4-series regular coupe. The cars have the same interior as the 3 and 4 series. There's nothing different between the cars aside from a set of rear doors. Whatever complaints you have against the 3-series, can be made against the 3GT, 4GC and 4 coupe.

I have driven a few. They're fine cars; I see why people like them. But the 4 coupe offers almost the same level of engagement at daily driver levels, whilst being more comfortable. Also, the lease price between these models is usually about the same, with BMW dealers often offering incentives on the 3/4 series but not the 2 series.

Quote from: MexicoCityM3 on September 27, 2017, 10:06:31 AM
The coupe is quite popular around here.

At least in the US, the 4-series outsells it 3 to 1. I can't picture the 2-series sticking around much longer. I know in Europe it's prolly just as dire, maybe even worse. There's only one body style, a body style that no one really wants anymore.

The PT drove OK. Only internet guys slam it. It was acceptable for it's day.

Xer0

BMW needs the 2 to continue winning magazine comparisons since outside of it, the magazine will just talk about how lost and terrible and yada yada yada it is as a brand.

Which I don't mind, I love the 2.

Basically the 3rd generation "1er" sedan...

2020 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe Spotted Again, This Time In Base Trim

Following its spy debut a few days earlier, the upcoming BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe was spotted again, in what appears to be a base trim form.

Unlike the previous prototype we showed you earlier this week, this one appears to be fitted with less aggressive bodywork, smaller wheels and a more subtle dual-exhaust setup.

Codenamed F44, the new four-door 2-Series variant is set to rival the Mercedes CLA and the Audi A3 Sedan when it hits the market around 2020, a year after the new generation 1-Series makes its own debut.

Just like the upcoming 1-Series, the 2-Series Gran Coupe will be front-driven as the two models will be based on the same underpinnings. However, BMW will offer an all-wheel drive system as an option to select powertrains, including the range-topping versions.

The engine range will be comprised by three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel units, with hybrid versions also planned to make their appearance. There will be no six-cylinder option this time, so if you're in the market for a 240i version, make it happen before the rear-driven compact BMW goes out of sale.

As for the design, BMW is reportedly planning to evoke the spirit of the 2002 with the new 2-Series, which should translate into a more different visual character from the closely-related 1-Series.
