Over a decade since the first Bugatti Veyrons started rolling off the line, we've grown accustomed to the idea of a car – even a new one – commanding a seven-figure price tag. Most of those that have joined the Veyron in that stratosphere have been supercars... but an SUV?

Yes, an SUV... but not just any SUV. This is a Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet... the very last one made, in fact. And it just sold for the equivalent of over $1.4 million at auction.

The G650 is the most luxurious version of Benz's legendary G-Wagen to date, combining the beefed-up suspension from the G500 4x4² with the 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 engine from the AMG G65 and all the luxury amenities (and status) that separate a Maybach from an "ordinary" Mercedes.

The German automaker committed to building just 99 examples for public consumption, each said to be priced at about €630,000 – about $740k at current exchange rates. This one nearly doubled that when it sold for €1,200,000 ($1.41 million) on Friday at Bonhams' auction in Zoute, Belgium.

The winning bid came from an unnamed local Belgian collector, with proceeds to benefit the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation that Mercedes has long supported.

With 83 percent of all lots sold, Bonhams handled over €5.5 million at the sale, with the Maybach G commanding the highest price of all. That's not to say there wasn't anything else of value on offer: other highlights included a 1968 Ferrari 365 GTC (sold for €805,000), 1957 Porsche 356A Speedster and 1993 Jaguar XJ220 (€391,000 each), 2000 BMW Z8 (€316,000), 1965 Jaguar E-Type 4.2-Litre Roadster (€250,700), and 1967 Citroën DS21 convertible (€218,500).

The Landaulet is more like a Wrangler than the Murano Cabrio.  There is a correct and incorrect way to do open-roof SUV.  Murano is in the incorrect bucket.
