I didn't know most of those. All I'd be able to come up with is the Suburban.

I mean...you own a mini van...

I don't pay much attention to SUVs. In 2015 we went to CarMax and I sat in the back of every one they had available. None had as much space in the third row as every minivan I've owned. Too  bad, I wanted to shop mazdas and Flexes...

Mini vans are the ultimate in flat-floor comfort and space.  No doubt about it.  SUVs make lots of compromises, especially because you introduce driven rear wheels.

Toyota Sienna offers AWD without compromise of interior space.

It's more the ground clearance of the SUV vs. minivan which eats into interior SUV space.

Subie played it very safe with the styling.  It looks massive and brawny and given how Subaru can do no wrong recently, it should be a big sales success.  I'd take one over a Pilot or Highlander. Probably a bit under powered for how big it is and noisy (my guess), but overall a great package.

I hope we never need a 3 row. I'd rather just submit to a minivan

Ehh, three row SUVs are fine especially because you don't live in a cramped urban city environment.  American roads and parking spaces are wide. Gas is cheap and looks to remain cheap for the foreseeable near future.  Also minivans don't get that great mileage.  Ergonomically a minivan no question is better but if you don't like the styling it's better to sacrifice a little bit of function for form as long as it gets the job done.  It's like a winter coat.  Unless you're doing something like the Iditarod, you don't need to get the most functional lightweight warmest weatherproof coat on the market.  You can get that peacoat because it looks damn good on you and gets the job done.

MrH

Probably a 50:50 shot one of these ends up in my driveway at some point. Either this or the next Highlander will be the wife's next car. Undoubtedly it will be black with a black interior (that's all she buys for some reason).

I'll be curious to see how they're priced.

Saw another article that they'll be twin-turbo flat-4 with CVT (with options to simulate traditional autotragic).

Seems it's going to just fit in with the Highlander/Pilot crowd, nothing really stands out. Might cut into Outback sales, but Subaru has been without fail gradually increasing sales the last decade.

https://www.carsdirect.com/compare/toyota-sienna-vs-toyota-highlander
Regular Sienna gets better than 4-banger Highlander.
Room: 150cu ft Sienna vs 83 in Highlander, all seats down. Sienna has 39cu ft with all seats up.

Odyssey vs. Pilot
https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/compare/Honda-Odyssey-vs-Honda-Pilot_d592_d594#section-specs
Similar prices,
Odyssey gets 1 mpg better highway (aerodynamics?) but same city
Odyssey is 9in. longer and 13in. longer, resulting in twice as much cargo room.

Odyssey is not available in AWD.

Each of them have their place, I would consider going 3row SUV for next purchase, as we don't use the 3rd row much. Wife is enjoying current Odyssey though.

Well, to me, these things don't look any better than minivans. They are essentially minivans with rear hinged doors and butch tires. 2 row crossovers look way better. I think the real problem with minivans is they are effing huge. I was going to say they should bring back the SWB minivan, but I think that's the role the 3 row crossover has filled.

My bigger gripe is the comical growth of vehicles in these classes. 3 row, minivan, neither is going to fit in my garage with a second car. It's tight with the MKX as is. I wish we got some of the LWB stuff they got in China.

If I need 7 seats, I'll just get a Sienna. They drive better and are more practical. The recent one even look pretty good.

(I would have said Odyssey but Honda's styling is garbage lately. There's a new CR-V parked on my street that looks like a chubby Bulldog. Sorry Lebowski)

You have a garage for kids' bikes?    :mrcool:

The minivan was actually invented so it could fit into garages, where all the vans sold back then did not fit.

They truly are better at everything except some minor off-roading. Don't use it for that!!

Mini vans aren't really all that big.  A Honday Odyssey is shorter than my Tacoma in length, and my Tacoma fits with a few inches to spare in my tiny 1-car garage.  If you can't fit a mini van in your garage, you have too much other stuff in your garage.

You think so?   Seems to be just average with the rest of them. Nothing seems to jump out as "better".

Subaru dealers have been clamoring for this type of vehicle for awhile now. The B9 Tribeca wasn't the best product, but this is.

Compared to its 3-row competition, you mean?  I think it's a great idea for Subie to jump into this segment and compete with the Traverse and Acadia.  Subaru has been on a roll, and I bet offering something larger like this will get even more people through their door.

AutobahnSHO

Hope so. I love me some Subies. :ohyeah:

It seems in your case it's more of a width issue rather than a length issue (no porn pun intended ).  Small garages are annoying.  My former abode was a townhouse with a 1 car small garage which I could barely fit my Enclave into.  I just ended up leaving it parked in the driveway.

12,000 RPM

I feel like this segment is cooling off and getting more crowded. Subie's a little late. But not too late I suppose

I would imagine that it will be about the same size as a GMC Acadia which is a little under 200 inches long. The first Acadia was almost exactly the same size as a Dodge Grand Caravan but they Shrunk the new Acadia down a little.

Cooling off? No way, CUVs are devouring the market.
