Ford Reportedly Working On A Baby Mustang Mach-E Based On VW's MEB Platform

Ford introduced the Mustang Mach-E earlier this year and a new report says the company is working on a smaller crossover that could keep the pony car name.

According to Auto Express, the so-called 'baby' Mach-E will ride on Volkswagen's MEB platform. While that sounds unusual, the two companies reached a platform sharing agreement this summer and Ford confirmed they plan to "build at least one high-volume fully electric vehicle in Europe for European customers starting in 2023."

At the time, Ford projected they would sell over 600,000 MEB-based vehicles in Europe over the course of six years. The company also revealed a second MEB-based model was "under discussion."

It remains unclear which of the vehicles is the 'baby' Mach-E, but Auto Express says Ford and Volkswagen meet last month to discuss possible changes to the MEB platform. These discussions reportedly centered on the position of the front bulkhead and cowl as Ford apparently wants the platform to allow for longer hoods and a sportier profile.

Ford didn't confirm this, but the company's electrification boss, Ted Cannis, told the publication "It's key that we have enough flexibility, and it's important to have enough differentiation and the kind of performance you expect from a Ford."

Speaking of differentiation, Ford's European design chief said a smaller electric crossover would have a different profile than the Mach-E. Murat Gueler also suggested the crossover could keep the Mustang name as he confirmed "We have already talked about expansion, to some sort of family."

Little else is known about the crossover at this point, but it would be similar to the Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4. As a result, the model could be offered with two electric motors and an assortment of different battery packs.
