Title: New wheels for The Pirate
Post by: The Pirate on July 16, 2007, 07:59:59 PM
As some of you know, I sold the Civic a few weeks back.  Roughly two weeks ago, I pulled the trigger on a new (to me) car.

Without further ado, here she is.

It's a 2001 Mazda Protege ES with 91K miles.  It's in very good shape, and runs great.  The previous owner has receipts from new struts, sway bar links, recent tires, recent brakes, etc.  It's quite a step up for me, as I'm now rocking power windows and locks, keyless entry, cruise control and a sunroof.  It's a great handling car, and a bit peppier than the Honda as well.  As some of you may remember, I seriously test drove a Protege some time ago, and made a thread about my consideration.  In the end, I didn't buy that one, but really, really liked the car.  So, I ended up finding another one.

On a recent trip to Albany, NY; the car returned 34 mpg with cruise set at 71 mph, and the A/C running.  As well, the A/C in this car is positively frigid.  All in all, I'm very happy with it.

Nice looking car, I always liked that model Protege. :ohyeah:

Mazda makes a fantastic car, in just about any form.

Its a nice economical little sedan, and the nice thing is it doesn't punish you for wanting such a thing. In fact in some ways it rewards you(light weight, good handling, etc).

good choice, nice color and the rims make the car look sporty compared to others with smaller steelies.

that is some nice gas mileage too.

Very nice Pr0teg3. I'd like one with a terbow.  :praise:

Thanks guys.

I love the sunroof, it's the first car I've owned that has one, and it's positively brilliant.
Sixteen inch wheels as well, the car definitely has a firm ride, but it's well worth it as soon as you find some twisties.  I do rather like the color as well, though that wasn't a factor in the purchase.  Buying used certainly limits your options.

Be sure to take that Protege out to an autocrosss sometime... they always do well in stock form.

Congratulations Adam.  The car's body appears to be in great shape, so if the mechanics are good, you've got a winner.

Your car is the same color as mine, so that's another reason for me to like it.

My previous car is the first car I ever had with a sunroof.  I love it.  It's great to be able to open the roof on those nice days.  You'll definitely enjoy that.

Best of luck with it, man.

I'd rather have a black contour but silver ain't so bad

I never really understood the appeal for sunroofs. We've actually never owned a car with it but we had a PT cruiser for a few days (someone lent it to us while they went away) and that had a sunroof. It's amazing for venting the car but not really useful for anything else

Great little car. I always felt that model of Protege was one of the best cars in that class back then. Fun and well built little cars. I must have fixed about 2000 of them and can dissemble you car in about an hour!

I think what turned me away from the car was how small it is (or at least looks to me)

I'd be lying if I said the sunroof wasn't a strong factor, though the rest of the package fit well with what I was looking for too.  The body is in great shape for the year.  I'm the 3rd owner, and it's only had two winters in NY state (it was originally from northern Florida), so the underside is in good shape too.  I do like the silver as well.  The car looks good in it, and it's fairly stealthy on the highway as well.

Good to hear!  If I have any body questions, I'll be looking your way.  I hope whatever you fixed on that many of them was fairly minor.

It's a similar car to the Honda, just more goodies.  I do like it better on the whole, however some things on the Honda were a bit better.  I've got keyless entry now, I can lock and unlock at will!  :praise:

I was going to ask, but i just assumed(prayed) it was a manual.

The automatic wouldn't have been that bad, but the manual rounds out the package nicely.

Fair assumption, and I definitely would have deserved it.  An automatic in that car would have been sacrilege for sure, and I walked away from a sharp looking blue Protege5 because it was an auto.  It also had 130K miles, which was a bit higher than I wanted.

I'm not opposed to it, actually.  Though, in a small, nimble car with a smallish engine, I prefer a manual.  Something like boat tail Riviera, or a W140, I could easily enjoy the automatic.

My brother's car is automatic (much to his chagrin), and it's rather fun to drive.

Have you driven it?  They're far more, ahem, substantial cars than a little economy car.  Does your soon-to-be have a tilt wheel?

Congratulations!  Sharp looking car - and some slick wheels, too!  And of course, fine choice on the tranny.  Had you chosen wrongly, I know the fine forum members here would have made your life a living hell!  Those suspension mods sound good - a little stiff ride is well worth the extra handling.

My brother's 1995, which I will affectionately refer to as "SVT Lite," doesn't have a tilt wheel.  I was just wondering.  If it's the same shift linkage as the 1995 SE V6, then I find it to be a little vague and I missed a few shifts while driving it a few weeks ago while getting into fifth gear, but I kinda envy you.  They're nice.

Thanks, it's certainly one of the more fun cars that existed in my price range.  Had I bought an automatic, I would have thoroughly deserved any lashings that came my way.  :mask:

As far as the suspension and wheels (which so many of you commented on, and I agree, they are great looking), the car is bone stock.  Considering that, it's really amazing how well it handles.

Oh, my bad!  I read "The previous owner has receipts from new struts, sway bar links..." and subconsciously inserted "aftermarket"!  Where's the dope slap smiley?? Well, from what I've heard, Mazda does make a nice handling car.  I drove a Mazda 3 wagon that was stock and it was a riot to drive.  Real nice balance, very lively feel.

So now the only mod you need is to slap on a turbo and kick it up to a rally-worthy 250 HP! :ohyeah:

Well, you know I have a friend with an insane addiction to turbochargers and car builds...

Well, he's not the president of the new racing club we're starting at school.  He should be, but he isn't.  The reason:  the person who is prez was the first person to sign up so Bob Fryer (pull out your May or June Automobile Magazine and you'll see that name on the side of the original Panther Racing Javelin) selected him.  anyway, he called my friend because he's a little unknowledgeable about these sorts of things and said we should all go to BeaveRun because they had an open drift day and we need to learn how to get control of the car.

Prez:  We'll rent something.  I don't know...Maybe some Mazda3s.

Friend:  Rent?  Aren't they automatic?

Prez:  Yeah...But it'll help--

Friend:  And aren't they FWD?

Prez:  Yeah...

Friend:  So, you know, you go through a lot of tire when you drift... (short personal story ensues) ...what are you planning on doing for tires?

Prez:  Going to a dealer and picking up their old tires.  You know, you can get them for pretty cheap.

Friend:  So you're planning on taking FWD auto cars out and drifting them on bald tires?

Prez:  Yeah, but--

Friend:  (Laughing ensues)

Well, you know I have a friend with an insane addiction to turbochargers and car builds...

Well, he's not the president of the new racing club we're starting at school. He should be, but he isn't. The reason: the person who is prez was the first person to sign up so Bob Fryer (pull out your May or June Automobile Magazine and you'll see that name on the side of the original Panther Racing Javelin) selected him. anyway, he called my friend because he's a little unknowledgeable about these sorts of things and said we should all go to BeaveRun because they had an open drift day and we need to learn how to get control of the car.

My Friend: So what kinds of cars will be using? My BMW isn't quite ready to do anything like that.

IMO the '01-'04 Protege is the best 4 door car, ever.

Good gas mileage, awesome interior, inexpensive, great handling, good looks, and great "chuckability."

Before I joined the Air Force, I wanted one desperately, but it wouldn't have been smart to buy a car then.  I didn't have much money and I already had a '98 model year car.

I'm very jealous

That looks like the MP3 Protege but the MS had the same one if I remember correctly. Aways looked like a dinner table on the back of the car to me. Glad they toned down on stuff like that for the other MS cars.

As for M power and the SVT, I loved mine. Fun, rapid, and an outstanding handling car.

Raza, it's like trying to explain teh appeal of a convertible to someone who doesn't get it. the ventilation is one part of it, yes. Then there is the view out of it on beautiful fall days, or summer nights... For those of us who love convertibles it's the best way to have a sedan, so you can have the practical aspects of a sedan with all the wind in your hair/ventilation/view of a convertible, in a more secure package. And there's an intangible feeling driving with the top open all the way... Just like I drive the Fiat with the top down as often as possible, I drive the BMW with the sunroof open as often as possible.

It's not just the ventilation.

I've tried explaining it to people, and if you don't get it, you don't get it.  There's nothing I can do.

Those convertibles are sports cars and their appeal goes beyond the convertible top. I was also talking about cars like my Comet that aren't sports cars, but cruisers. There is the appeal of the elements that you're no longer separated from but can be if necessary (unlike on a motorcycle, for example). The sunroof in a sedan is a small effort towards getting that feeling in a more practical car. I just came back from lunch that included driving the BMW with the windows down and the sunroof wide open. Great feeling.

Few experiences in life can top the feeling you get on a crisp evening with the stars bright in the sky and the heater barely on driving down a twisty road with the sunroof all the way open. Fucking magical.

My dad has refused to get one on any car we've ever owned because of the associated reduction in headspace. Thank God I'm a couple inches shorter and it doesn't seem to bother me.

I like having a sunroof, but it certainly isn't a big deal. Of course, I think mine might technically be a moon roof since it is metal (?), I'd imagine a glass one that opened bigger (mine has to go over the roof) would be better.

I believe the classification is a metal sunroof and a glass moonroof.  Logic being a moonroof can be used at night without actually opening the roof.  Our 300SD TD had a steel sunroof, and every other car I can remember has had glass, and has been called a "moonroof", which seems like a refinement/marketing gimmick based on the sunroof idea.

'Moonroof' is a term not used here, so I doubt it's a physical classification, but rather localised terminology. The Australian Mitsubishi Verada, exported to the US as a Mitsubishi Diamante, was often referred to here as having a sunroof, but called a moonroof in the US.

For example, this  Mitsubishi Verada (http://carpoint.com.au/used-car/MITSUBISHI/VERADA/Queensland/csn1315039.aspx) is listed as having a glass sunroof, whereas this Mitsubishi Diamante (http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=226681743&dealer_id=586937&car_year=2003&model=DIAMAN&num_records=&make2=&start_year=1996&keywordsfyc=&keywordsrep=&engine=&certified=&body_code=0&fuel=&awsp=false&search_type=both&distance=0&marketZipError=false&search_lang=en&make=MIT&color=&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&min_price=&drive=&default_sort=priceDESC&max_mileage=&style_flag=1&sort_type=priceDESC&address=90210&advanced=&end_year=2008&doors=&transmission=&max_price=&cardist=337) has a glass moonroof, even though they're both glass holes in the roof.

EDIT:  Oh yeah, the rest of the car is kicking as well.  Definitely a step up from the Honda, probably.  How is it quickness, handling, and feel-wise?

:praise: for the sunroof is exactly right.  I love it, and now have cursed myself to having a sunroof or convertible vehicle in my lineup at all times in the future.

Step up from the Honda is quasi-correct.  It certainly has more creature comforts, and is newer with less miles.  The Honda had better steering feedback, and a better transmission feel.

The Mazda has steering feel that is close to the Honda, but it's a lot heavier with a quicker ratio.  The Mazda tranny is a tiny bit notchy, but still very good otherwise.  The engine is 400cc larger in displacement, with a good boost in hp and torque.  It feels a bit zippier.  Magazine tests would place the Mazda a second or so ahead of a 2000 Civic DX to 60 mph.  Not earth shattering, but quicker is better, even in small doses.  I lost 300 rpm in the rev range, but the Mazda has fairly close ratios, and it's easy to keep it on boil.  As I do a fair amount of highway driving, I wish the gearing was taller overall (it revs about 3350 rpm at 70 mph), but I can't complain too much, as it'll return 34 mpg with A/C use.

The handling on this car is nothing short of spectacular, given that it's an economy car.  Mild understeer is present at times, but overall it's very neutral, and oversteer occurs relatively easily.  The ride/handling tradeoff is superb as well.  I read a review somewhere that called the Protege ES a 4 door FWD Miata, and that's very accurate IMO.  For the price, it's a great car, and an absolute blast to drive.

All cars understeer.

Once you get used to it, you'll get into a rhythm of loading up the fronts and using the front weight bias to unsettle the rear enough to tighten the line.  There's a learning curve.  Plus, you're only like 14, so don't think you're going to be an expert already.

What tires is it wearing and are they the right pressure? I'd run 36 psi front and 32 rear. Then, dont 'just yarf the steering wheel to turn. Set up the chassis by going in a little hot and lifting, then modulate the car with the throttle. Alternatively, you can lightly (LIGHTLY) press the brake pedal with your left foot while using the throttle with the right.

I think that's bad advice Chris.  He should into a corner light on speed, and then stand on the brakes and turn full lock towards the corner, while accelerating at maximum pace in lowest gear possible.  That's how the pros do it.

The tires are Yokohama Avid V4's and i haven't checked tire pressure yet actually

I can't believe I haven't posted in this thread yet.

First off, Congratulations! The Protege ES is a very awesome car.  I have only had mine for a bit but I'm glad I chose it.  The sunroof is awesome, as is the handling, the shifting and the smile this car puts on your face.  While mine is green, when I look at your car I get the same happy feeling I get knowing the satisfaction with it.      :ohyeah: :ohyeah:

While being a compact/economy car, the Protege I feel maintains an aggressive stance and look with its wheels, front fascia and rear spoiler.

This car screams "drive me" once you sit and buckle up and put the car into gear.
I absolutely love the back lit orange gauges and cluster when it's dark out.

Oh, and one thing, check your trunk for water.  It collects on both sides of your rear quarter panels inside your trunk and also sometimes inside your spare tire area as well.  Mine gets water occasionally on the drivers side panel.  It seems to be a common problem, and I'm trying to figure out where it's coming from.

Awesome!  I'm still getting a feel for it's handling, and the clutch is a bit different from the one in my Civic (it was a challenge to drive smoothly at first), but I've gotten used to that as well.  It's really the first car I've owned that just felt "right."  I want to keep this one and run it into the ground.  I still can't believe it's an economy car, it really is that much fun.

How's the SVT Contour treating you?  I must say that I if I ever find a low mileage, well maintained example, I'd have to consider it.  If you do the straight pipe thing, post up a vid on youtube or something.  :ohyeah:

Yes, they are awesome cars, and I'm very glad I ended up with one as well.  I agree with everything you said, it's a hoot to drive, and looks great as well.  Those 16 inch wheels fill up the wheelwells very nicely, and the car has a taut, clean look; especially from a rear 3/4 view.  I'm a fan of the white gauges with orange backlighting as well.

As far as the water seeping into the trunk, the former owner mentioned this to me as well, and I've been checking it (we've had some rain lately), and mine appears to be have a tiny bit of moisture.  I'm going to spend some time exploring it as well.  I might shoot Onslaught a PM, as he is a Mazda body guy.

Yours is sharp looking as well, I love the green.  Your wheels are a touch different from mine as well.  What do you have for tires, and what do you think of them?

Edit:  We should form an alliance for operation trunk water removal!   Keep me posted if you discover anything about that, and I'll do the same.

Hehehe, my car has 91K miles on it, that shift pattern is long gone on my knob.

I have the same cloth on my seats, as well.

I've got a question for you.  Do you have to pull up the parking brake quite a bit for it to engage?  It seems like you do in my car.  It holds fine, but whereas my Honda's brake engaged in 4 or 5 clicks, the Mazda seems like it takes ~12 clicks to engage.  It works fine otherwise, and it just passed inspection, so I'm not too worried; just curious.

Rims probably a minor update from 01 to 02.  I know though that the 01-03 model year Protege's are by far the sharpest ones made.  Too bad the Mazda 3 came along.  :tounge:

Actually speaking I think I might replace my Protege shift knob with a Mazda 3/6 one.

I think leather is more comfortable to hold on to (IMO), and that knob makes the interior look classier than the stock one.  Not to mention the stock knob gets really hot in the sun.  I'm sure that one wouldn't be not warm, but I can't imagine it being  more absorbent of heat than the stock knob.

If the stock knob fits, then it is M10 x 1.25 thread pitch. Most Mazdas re this pitch, except the MP3. So that means shift knobs between Protege, 3/6, the Mazda Speed Protege, etc could be screwed on.

My mother previously had a Focus, not a manual but it was a very good car.  Great handling, decent acceleration in an economy car.  In fact I was looking at a black SVT Focus, however it was about 10k.  That was a car I was looking at though.

I was looking at SVT's along with Mazdaspeeds.  However the Contours most had higher mileage which was a drawback.  The Foci are a bit too new and expensive being around $10k.  Forget about a SVT Cobra on insurance.  The Focus would have been $75 more a month over my Protege ES.  So even if the cars on the lot were the same price I don't know if I would have went for it.

The SVT Focus doens't drive much differnety than a regular Focus. The brakes have much more direct feel, the gearshift feels much more solid, and there's more power on the top-end... otherwise, not much different.

Yeah, the gearing is a bit short for my preference.  I'd like a 6th gear, or just make all the existing gears a bit taller.

The close ratios are good though, it makes the car quicker.

Yeah my first is almost useless, besides starting from stop.  (So i guess i just refuted my point).  Anyways the car almost drives smoother in a parking lot in 2nd gear.  For some reason when I am in first and in a parking lot, and take my foot off the gas to slow down instead of hard braking, the car seems to buck while slowing down.  The higher RPMs aren't as bad as a Miata I test drove, that thing buzzes on the highway.

Yeah, the bucking in first is kinda normal.  Both of my other manual tranny vehicles would do that as well.  I've no major complaints with the the gearing, as it still returns good fuel economy, and makes it fun on backroads.

What do you expect for a high-performance SVT car? The SVT Focus gets about the same mileage, and it's a 4-bangzer! If you're so concerned, I'll trade you the 'st33m, it gets 36mpg floored in 3rd gear trying to climb a 10% grade at 70mph.

yes, fucus takes premium, and so does your i think. If you don't use it, the knock sensor will figure it out and cut timing, so you'll make less power and get worse gas mileage. It's probabably worth the extra cost of premium gas because you will probably use less of it, but you might experiement a bit to find out for sure.

try shifting normally (1-2-3-4-5). IIRC, you'd have to be revving pretty high in 1st if you're going straight to 3rd. better for the engine that way, anyways.

When I first started driving manual on the Protege I was shifting in the mid 3,000-4,000 range.  I cut down to lower 2,000s and noticed smoother shifts, and better gas mileage.  Higher RPMs, more fuel consumed.  In fact on a few major roads in the country near my house I have shifted to 5th gear just for the fact that instead of running in the mid to high 3,000's I could be in the 2,000's.

It's probabably worth the extra cost of premium gas because you will probably use less of it, but you might experiement a bit to find out for sure.

Any difference in fuel economy between regular and premium, at least in the case of a '95 Prelude, is unnoticeable. I still use premium except when it goes over $3.20 or when I am feeling particularly cheap.

I almost always skip at least one gear, often a couple. The engine never lugs and the only time I really rev high at all is when I just gotta-to-go (which is also when I typically actually do 1-2-3-4-5).

It would cause any  harm, there is just some sort of interlock to stop you from doing it, I guess to save the synchro. Really, 1st is almost always too short if you are already rolling.

Try pulling the shifter out of 2nd, into the neutral gate, back the 3/4 rest spot, and then into first.  Many transmissions will stop you from going from 2nd into first, to avoid an accidental shift, I assume.

Also, depending on the trans, shifting back into 1st at 10mph is pretty inadvisable.  I usually don't get back into 1st until I drop to 6mph.

You're talking marginal increases in price.  You go for 87 instead of 93, your engine will make less power and will get worse gas mileage.  You're the one that doesn't use air conditioning because it eats up 2/10ths of an MPG.
Title: Re: New wheels for The Pirate
Post by: TBR on July 20, 2007, 12:30:55 PM
Using premium does not have any noticeable impact on fuel economy and will run you about $3.00 per tank or $9-12 per paycheck for me. Sorry, I am not always willing to throw away that much money on a 10 year old car with 300k miles.  As far as less power, since I don't drive like a bandit except when gas is real cheap (as in around $2.00 for 87) it just doesn't matter.

In many cases gas mileage increases with regular over premium, but yes, you do lose some power. For some, a marginal performance drop is less significant than what some may consider the marginal savings.

I did it a couple times by accident when I first got my Protege.  The engine was screaming a bit when i did it, and it slowed it down pretty fast from like 20 or whatever it was.  Felt dumb afterwards because it slows you down to a crawl in first.

For the Protege there is no button.  My dads old Ford Explorer Sport 5 Speed (FAST I know!) had a button over the ignition that I remember having to press when I was in it.

I couldn't figure out how to get the key out of the Protege after the test drive, and then when I got home with it.  I didn't realize you had to push the key into the ignition as you turn counter clockwise to release it.

Well I didn't put it there. Previous owner did, I just kept it there.  Mazda I believe sent them to the owner after they bought with a letter.  My mom got one with her Mazda 6 last year too in the mail.

People sell custom colored ones on ebay and vinyl ones just like the sticker.

On Mazdausa.com under Inside Mazda -> Mechandise -> Mazda Brand M store -> Accessories -> they sell the white and black ones separate in a package of 50 for 12.50.

What one would do with 50 zoom zoom stickers, I have no clue.

Tagging random cars would be fun at school for instance, except that everyone would find out it was me.

But, if I was to get something like this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2006-SUBARU-LEGACY-GT-LTD-AWD-PERRIN-INTK-FREE-SHIPPING_W0QQitemZ330148138307QQihZ014QQcategoryZ31869QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) you better believe I would put premium in it. No car payment, no car payment...maybe saying it over and over again will help me resist!!

If you look at the car, you'll see that the piping for the turbo (I assume) is super long.... car must have lots of turbo lag

You would have to part it out or sell it for about $2k or so to a guy who wants to do a swap though. So basically you're either spending tons of time parting it out to get your money back or you quickly take a $4k loss. :(

What kind of math do they teach you in Cali?

He paid $4600 for it, so if he sells it for two G's, that's a loss of $2600.  Not exactly chump change, but it's far from $4K.

Oh right. For some reason i thought he bought it for $6k but that's what he wanted to sell it for before it seized.

2 G's is easily doable I think. I'm trying to get like 3000 for it though...still remains to be seen what'll happen

Goose the throttle, it'll go in.

Hell, I used to downshift into first at 30 MPH Clutchless in the S2000 all the time, and you had to rev the motor up to 6000 RPM in order to do it smoothly.

gear jammer
