The restyled 2008 Ford Freestyle has been renamed the Ford Taurus X.

I agree with the renaming of the Five Hundred Taurus, I'm ambivalent to the renaming of the Montego Sable, but I disagree with this. They want this car to be seen as an alternative to an SUV, not as the station wagon it seems to have been perceived as.

I'm glad we bought a Freestyle and not a Taurus X...although I like the redesign and the new engine.
Also, the new styling should have been better, more like that rendering that was floating around than like this:
I don't know, I actually really like the new design. It's nicer then the current one (the one I bought that we are supposed to get this week, but hasn't shown up yet).
I agree that it's nicer than the current design (except the taillights), but the problem IMO was the weak front end. It needed to be a lot bolder, more upright, taller. The 3-bar grille doesn't do nearly enough.

I disagree. For what it is, the design is great. I think the current design is a little on the boring side, but don't tell my wife I said that.
well I think that facelift really works wonders for that car, looks more attractive to me than the Edge. the new 3.5L engine would be very welcome also. this is what Ford should have made the car in the first place (this seems to be a recurring thing with them)
but the name "Taurus X"? well that's just funny :wtf:
I never liked the name "Freestyle"...I couldn't even remember it correctly...I kept thinking of it as "Freeranger" which didn't make any sense at all.? As well, the name Five Hundred, by itself, did not make that much sense.? Although I'm not a big fan of "Taurus" either, the more I think about it, the more sense it makes to, sort of, consolidate the pair of them under the "Taurus" label.? I would have preferred that they resurrected the name "Galaxie" rather than "Taurus", but having used it as the name of some Euro Van, it may have been too confusing.
Anyways, Taurus is the contemporary NA name that is recognizable and, somewhat known as a (once) popular car.

? or maybe...

Yep.
According to the press release, Ford needs to quickly bank on name recognition by renaming these models after the Taurus/Sable.
What's next?
Focus--Taurus mini (mmm, kinda catchy)
Fusion--Taurus Midi
Focus to Escort wouldn't be too bad.

I disagree. The Tempo has a really bad reputation.
Tempos are like cockroaches: ugly, provoking displays of disgust, but as a species seemingly indestructible.
Tempos will still roam the Earth long after humans died from global warming.

Escort has content owners, and it wasn't killed off that long ago, Focus has two years worth of owners angry about the early quality lapses.
And I'm pretty sure the Tempo thing was a joke, though it's not a bad name.

Look at the A, B, C, and D pillars, the rounded front with the rectangular headlights, and some of the details, and it looks more like the Taurus than I think any of us thought originally. Weren't they going to originally call the 500 the Taurus anyway?

Some tidbits of information from Wikipedia:
When the Ford Tempo was first released, it was claimed to have "the world's most advanced automotive computer" and also to have "more rear room than a Mercedes 300D" .
The 1985 Ford Tempo was the first production car in America to include a driver's airbag. [1]
While the car sold well, it was often criticized by journalists as being inferior dynamically and technologically to rival Japanese models, particularly the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Nissan Stanza.[citation needed]
The most expensive 1994 Ford Tempo (a fully loaded LX sedan with 3.0L V6) was about $12,900, however the base model 1995 Contour was $13,990 (GL sedan with 4cyl, manual, no options).
For a time in the early-to-mid 1990s, Ford had three of the top five selling passenger cars: Ford Escort, Ford Taurus, and Ford Tempo. (The Taurus became the number one overall in 1992.)
Talk show host Carson Daly's first car was a Ford Tempo, he has said he drove it during high school.[citation needed]
In the late 1980s and the early 1990s, the Tempo was among the top five selling sedans in North America, and was tied with the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry for first place in J.D. Power and Associates initial quality survey (1992). The Tempo was the first North American-made car to offer a driver's side airbag (since GM offered them in full-size GM cars from 1974 to 1976, which proved unsuccessful). The Tempo was replaced by the 1995 Ford Contour. The Oakville plant was retooled to build the Ford Windstar (and then Freestar) minivan. This plant currently builds the Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX.
Tempo AWD; In 1987 an all-new model was offered for the Ford Tempo. Simply named 'Tempo AWD', this model was made from 1987 to 1991 and was the only Tempo to have All Wheel Drive. However, this Tempo had standard All Wheel Drive. Sales were exceptional, especially in Canada (so good were sales, that the Mercury Topaz got three all wheel drive models) and Northern America. The Tempo AWD's features were essentially the standard features on the Tempo GL, with the optional features of the Tempo LX. This model also had its own appearance package, called the Tempo AWD Appearance Package. This included special badging, interior badges and (most notable) a three-inch-wide chrome strip running from front wheel to rear wheel, that read Tempo AWD (with 'All Wheel Drive' under the larger AWD writing). This is an extremely rare package, however, it will not likely be of much value until the Tempo is well into its antique years.
There was a very rare option available with a vinyl roof called the "Premier Edition" offered on (1992) models. Other rare options were the all leather interior option on the GLX (1985) and the (1984/1985) vinyl sun roof.

I know someone who has an original shit brown 1984 Tempo.? He bought it for $300, and the odo has rolled over several times.? If someone wants it, I can see if I can work something out the next time I go home or I could get Jordan to pick it up since he doesn't live too far away.? It's the first model year.

I tried to give a customer $300 for her Tempo yesterday. It needs a clutch...and a paint job. It has 225,000 miles and has nevere had any engine work.
It is a V-6, 5 speed. I took it out yesterday for a road test and despite the slipping clutch, that little car screamed. I was really hoping she would take me up on it. Instead, she elected to spend $600 and keep it. She has a almost new Ranger, it isn't like she needs the Tempo.

Seeing that we're talking about Tempos now...in that segment, for that time (mid 80s), they were very good.
I had 2 of them (and '86 and a '91). They were cheap, dependable and you couldn't kill them. As Ford was too distracted from product-line in the 90s, they let them die of neglect.

I did my driver's ed in a Tempo. It was a tremendous pile of shit that was terrifying (for a young driver) when getting up to speed on the freeway. I had to keep it floored continuously, and it made an awful groaning sound when the A/C was switched off.
The only other car I had driven at the time was a 96 Corolla, which seemed positively sprightly when compared with the Tempo.

You officially deserve pity. My driver's ed. car was a 1997 Honda Civic HX (hatch back). I liked it a lot with the exception of the horribly uncomfortable seat.
My driver's ed car was a 1974 (or1973) Olds Delta 88. It was like learning to drive in a Sherman tank. I almost ran over a mailman in that stupid landyacht.

I had a Toyota Echo. I remember looking down to check my speed for the first time and screaming in my head "Oh my god, someone's stolen my gauges!" and then I remembered they were retardedly in the middle.

Holden Astra. The bloody indicators were set for left hand drive, as with all imported Euro Holdens, so the first few lessons I completely embarrassed myself by flicking the wipers on and spontaneously changing lanes.

I had a Neon. Three-speed automatic, 2.0 L SOHC, w00t-w00t!
Other than the underwhelming powertrain it was pretty fun to drive.
I didn't spend too much time in my driver's ed car because my instructor thought I was at that time the best student he had, and my parents would take me out in my Camry daily to practice. It was after I got my full license that I started pulling fun shit... I was just so sick of being by the book.

Coming from the guy who hit his cousin's Dodge Shadow while leaving a parking stall... :nutty:
I wasn't going to say anything, but nobody is an amazing driver with their permit. There is just too much inexperience. It takes time behind the wheel, and experiencing different scenarios, to become a good driver.
With a permit, most new drivers are about as adept as a goat.
Even people with years of experience are rarely 'amazing' drivers.
I can't even count how many redlights I ran when I had my permit because I was paying so much attention to everything else. My dad always yelled at me and scared the hell out of me, which would make my foot jump on the gas and I'd go faster and he'd yell more.

I agree, and would say that most drivers are generally subpar.
I bought my car before I had my license, so I had the added fear of destroying personal property when I drove. Still, I only ran over a few curbs and switched lanes without using my mirrors a few times. That was it for me. I wouldn't call that subpar at all. It's better than most coffee-drinking, cellphone-wielding, makeup-applying women drivers.

This is exactly the group I was referencing. Not just women though. I've seen plenty of men doing all of the above (substitute shaving for makeup applying though).

Quote from: ifcar on February 07, 2007, 09:33:00 AM
I agree that it's nicer than the current design (except the taillights), but the problem IMO was the weak front end. It needed to be a lot bolder, more upright, taller. The 3-bar grille doesn't do nearly enough.
I like the way the Freestyle looks...bland-ish front end and all. But I'll admit the new Fusion-esque nose is an improvement and enhances the car's appeal. I like it. Anything more would have been overkill.
