Is that auto tranny in anything else? Ie, the Escape or some other model? I want to know it's reliable and not like the Focus nightmare.

I think it's the same 8AT as the Escape and Bronco Sport.  It's not PowerShit.

CVT is inherent to the hybrid.  Ford's Hybrid setup is basically a copy of the Toyota Synergy drive (IIRC Ford pays royalties to Toyota).

It's not a belt/chain driven CVT like most of them.  It's the same arrangement as Toyota's Synergy Drive.  Constant mesh planetary gearbox and the "ratios" are determined by the speed and direction that the hybrid motor turns.  Definitely more robust than the belt/chain driven boxes you see from Nissan et al.

What part of it failed?

Any transmission, even the most robust design, can experience a failure for a variety of reasons that are not due to the inherent robustness of the design.  I've seen old-school manual boxes from semi trucks, which are the epitome of overbuilt, break.  A material defect in a gear, shaft, or bearing that wasn't picked up in NDI can lead to a failure.  Or contaminated lubricants.

Apparently they increased the ev only speed as a result of a lawsuit about not getting stated mpg... and it turned out the electric oil pump didn't flow enough to keep the transmission from eating itself at that speed.

Or at least that's what I remember the dealer explaining

Interesting. I've read no torque converter and no reverse gear.

That's not a CVT-specific problem.  Literally any gearbox with insufficient lubrication will eat itself.

After swearing off ever buying new again, I admit this is making me rethink that stance. Still, if I really wanted a truck I can find a really nice used Taco or Frontier for half that price.

No, no you can't.

Last year you could, yes. Not now.

Let's ignore the fact that it has roughly 190,000 miles on the odometer...

Who's ignoring anything? I said I can get a used Taco for half the price, and I can. Pffft, that's just broken in on a Taco.

I never figured I'd buy a new car but I "need" one by next fall, this is really good commuting gas mileage, but still functional vehicle, for a ridiculous low price.

Fyi there have been a few reports of shoddy paint needing repair before leaving the dealership.

That, well pretty much supports my point;

That's 16,000 for a base 2014 Tacoma with 190,000 miles. That's a lot of coin for a basic used vehicle.

I found a nice 4 door, 4x4 Frontier with just 75,000 miles for $16K. Since my stance is that I don't want to buy new anymore (have a car payment) I probably could have used better examples. No big deal.

Yeah, I did. The Land Cruiser was still truckin' along , but the rust was becoming a little much, and I was able to sell it for nearly what I paid for it.

Got the last TRD off road on the lot at the local Toyota dealership. No bargains to be had unfortunately.
