Indeed. I find it very difficult not to lane split - it is like a survival/efficiency instinct that forces me to do so, despite its legal status. The prospect of a road rager trying to squeeze me between two cars or opening their door in my path (both have happened) is far less deadly than getting rear ended.

You can see a hubcap roll past from the initial accident before the dude gets creamed.
