Well, I had some time today before I had to go into work (they were working on giving me a new computer upgrade so I couldn't do any work). Saw this clean '02 954 for sale at a used bike dealership. I rode in with the FZ1, asked for a straight trade and rode off with the 954.

Now I just dropped $380 for new tires and frame sliders.

Think about this.  You've bought more bikes in the last two years than I have watches.

That's a cool bike, though.  I like it.

What year was the FZ?  I know it was gen2, but they built those for like 10 years.

It was an '06 - first year of the second gen.

Honestly, the FZ was alright. It was smooth, riding position was decent, and it was stupid quick. I just never really warmed up to it. Was a month enough time to really assess if I liked it? Probably not, but I just was never that excited to get on it and go anywhere. Plus, I didn't like the looks and the way it handled was spooky. I probably should have gotten it adjusted or something but from reading reviews online, '06 was the worst for suspension tuning and for throttle smoothness. The throttle was snatchy as hell and the gearbox was pretty clunky, and rather than dump $$$ to fix the suspension and ECU on a bike I wasn't that warmed up about I decided to hold off on any modifications. The used bike dealership posted this pretty clean looking 954RR and on a whim yesterday I decided to go check it out. I've wanted a 954 for the past 2 years almost so I had to go see it at least.

I think I paid $135 in tax and fees to get the 954. Got the paperwork done and rode it out. The registration is expired but the dealer is taking care of that so that itself saves me ~$70.

Granted, there are some problems with the 954 - it's on Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa tires, and the rear one is 10 years old. The turn signals don't really like to work, especially in the cold. Pushing the switch takes it about 20 seconds to a minute to respond. I think cleaning the switch out and replacing the grease they put in there should help. The clutch engages at the very very end of the lever travel, so I'm assuming the clutch is pretty much dead. I'm too scared to go WOT on these tires to see if it slips, though. The exhaust is not stock and has been modified to fit the bike. Luckily a stock used header and midpipe is $120 shipped off of ebay.

I definitely lost money on the trade, especially since the FZ didn't need work and this does, but at least I have a giant smile every time I get to ride the 954. Every time I rode the FZ I'd just keep thinking "man, this isn't even an R1".

I'll take a moment to rationalize Rag's decision before I rejoin the bandwagon ridiculing him:

Even if he lost some money trading the FZ for the Honduh, might as well as have a toy you're gonna enjoy if it's already an irrational decision. And really he probably only lost $1k on the trade, not a huge amount in the grand scheme of things if it really does make him happier.

You traded in a good condition motorcycle you ride pretty much every single day to commute to work for a sport bike that needs work (also, inb4 Rag complains about the riding position and spends more $$$ on a comfier handlebar like he did on the F4i)   :nutty:

I won't be doing the handlebar conversion on this (didn't really like it as much as I was hoping) and FWIW the F4i is still running around SF with the handlebar conversion.

How so? Like you I'm in pursuit of that perfect ride. It just so happens with cars I know what I like - lightweight, RWD, manual transmission sports cars, and beyond that basic formula I can customize the car to my liking. With bikes there are so many different ones out there that are still fun in their own way that I'm going through them all. I started on a standard, moved to a sport bike, then to a sport touring that was more touring than sport, then to a supermoto, then another sport touring that was more sport than touring. I guess I've finally come full circle back to the sport bike but this time it's something I've wanted to own for a couple years.

Honestly I feel like I did when I first got the RX7 - super happy but still in disbelief I finally own it. I also still think that if I didn't get hit on the FJ-09 I'd still have that, just based on how much I enjoyed riding that bike.

I thought it went:  Sport bike -> touring -> super moto -> touring -> sport bike

and in the middle, you bought another copy of your original sport bike, a separate dirt bike, and an rx-7.

If you thought the FJ was more touring than sport, you need to get some more exposure to the segment.

I mean, the FJ-09 is still pretty sporty, but it's got a bolt upright seating position. Something like your Ninja 1000 seems a lot sportier. What else in the "sport touring" category is less sporty than the FJ? Maybe a Multistrada?

I wouldn't consider bikes like the FJR to be a sport tourer but I could be wrong.

Bikes like the FJR and Concourse are the definition of sport touring bikes.  They are actually the pinnacle of the segment.  My N1K would be considered a middleweight or entry ST.  Some would class it as a sport bike/ST crossover, like the Interceptor.  Either way, it's not a proper ST.  FJR, ST1300, Connie 1400, Bimmer R-GT, Triumph Trophy...  Those are real sport touring bikes.

Well, I thought those were all just old man couch bikes. I guess my definition of "sport touring" is wrong.

I always though of sporty bikes with handlebars (FZ1, VFR, Ninja 1k, GSXS1000F, etc) or these newer "adventure" bikes that can't actually go off road (FJ-09, S1000XR, Multistrada) as sport tourers.

So what's a full on touring bike, then, other than a Goldwing?

These days, there is a lot of blurring of lines.  The advent of the repli-racer in the 90s kind of redefined sportbikes such that machines that used to be sportbikes now started to fall under the "sport touring" category because they were more comfortable than the new age "sportbike".  I'd consider an N1K or VFR to be sportbikes that, when fitted with luggage, can also do light sport-touring duty (specifically 1-up sport touring, they are too small to really do 2-up touring).  The FZ1 is a sporty standard that can also be re-purposed to do some light sport touring.  Multistrada would probably fall in a similar category, as would the FJ-09, Versys, and S1000X and the other non-off-road capable bikes trying to visually invoke the off-road capability of adventure bikes.  Adventure bikes are a combination of a light touring/ST machine (fitted with hard bags) and a dual sport.  I don't consider something that can't go off-road an Adventure bike.  Proper sport touring bikes can do 2-up distance riding (meaning significant luggage space and a large enough seat to be reasonably comfy for two for prolonged periods) but are faster and handle better than just touring bikes.  Touring bikes put an emphasis on comfort and are set up for going on very long, multi-day rides.

Eh, fleabay + some tinkering and elbow grease will have this thing far more dialed in for far cheaper than if I had tried to get the FZ1 where I want.

$1k into this thing and it'll be perfect. $1k would get me just an exhaust for the FZ1. I'd still be stuck with a twitchy throttle, crappy suspension and overweight chassis. I can fix the rear wheel, get new wheel bearings, clutch/cable/lever, exhaust, etc for that and have a clean, solid running bike.

The suspension and motor on this thing is dialed. The shop I bought it from is a suspension shop so they took everything apart and rebuilt it, and it's set up for pretty close to my weight so it already feels much, much better than the FZ1.

So, I know it's kind of too early to post riding impressions, but just commuting to and from work, it's amazing how much this thing feels like my old F4i. It's as if I never sold that bike.

Obviously I don't have a ton of experience with a bunch of different bikes but so far in my riding career, I'd have to say the early 2000's Honda sport bikes are my favorite. They are modern enough to not have to deal with carbs or chokes, but still extremely raw and visceral. There's some weird intangible feel about riding one... I didn't get the same feeling from riding my friend's 2011 CBR1000RR, though.

Yeah, no thanks on the SuperHawk. If I wanted a big Honda twin I'd get an RC51.

Also, if Wikipedia is to be believed, the '04 CBR1K gained 40-50 lb over the 954?! How is that even possible?

The internets says the 1k did gain some weight but I'm not sure exactly how much.

Likely a difference between dry, curb, and wet weights.  Bike companies haven't been consistent.  The latest trend for the most bikes is full wet (all fluids and a full tank of gas).  In the past they would cite weight with all fluids except fuel, or dry weight.

That's probably it. Wikipedia says the 954 is 370 lb dry, while the '04 1000 is 430lb dry. I'm seeing 400 dry and 425-430 wet elsewhere.

Either way, the bike feels far more nimble and light than the FZ1, even with clipons.

Dry.  They're like 850-900 wet, depending on options.  Also eerily light on their feet once underway for something that weighs half a ton with rider.  Drop into corners better than any cruiser I've ridden, including Sportsters.

I want to get a late 70s naked Goldwing and strip some weight off it. Not full cafe racer or anything, but a nice naked 6 cyl would be dope.

Old ones are 4 cyl, eh?

The Gold Wing was a flat-4 until the late 80s.  The original Gold Wings in the 70s didn't have the fairing or the bags.  They didn't go full dresser until the second generation in the 80s, and even then it was optional.  You could still get the naked version until I think the 3rd generation, or maybe the later years of the 2nd gen.

I think I'd like to add one of those to my stable of bikes if I'm ever rich (which I never will be if I keep going through bikes like water).

The swingarm looks like a home-made piece where somebody took a cheap, box-section swingarm from an entry-level bike and welded a bunch of bracing to it.

The only problem with short exhaust is that the frame gets dirtier. Although I'm not sure if that's as much as an issue on an FI bike with cats.

You guys are going to laugh, but I'm pretty sure the clutch is toast on the 954. I was riding home tonight and while leaving a stoplight the bike kept surging in first with the clutch out. It also smells pretty weird after parking.

The dealership I bought it from has a 50/50 30 day warranty so I'll call them tomorrow and see how much it'll be to fix it. It's about $200 to get the parts myself so if it's less than that at the dealership I'll just have them do it. Otherwise I'm going to be ordering all the parts for it tomorrow.

What about the other gears? Try something like starting in 2nd gear, and/or get into 5th or 6th at a low speed and crack the throttle. Slip, or butter?

Well I'm an idiot. I think the clutch is fine and maybe I was just losing traction on the painted crosswalk lines in the wet. Bike seems to ride fine otherwise. I took it to the dealership and they couldn't find anything wrong with it either so for now I'll stop worrying about it and try and fix the turn signals instead.

It looks like it hit a pothole pretty hard or something.

The new rear wheel comes with the sprocket carrier and a rotor so it's a pretty good deal. Hopefully the bearings aren't trashed but if they are I'll swap those over.

There's also an exhaust on eBay that's super tempting...

My roommate has one of those stands to measure wheel runout. I was just going to use that or just buy a static wheel balancer if that doesn't work.

I didn't balance my wheels this time since the rear wheel is coming off again soon. I just didn't want to roll around on a 10 year old tire in the rain.

How much can you guys ride on the reserve light before your bikes die?

My light was on for about 20 miles today and it started sputtering on the highway right before my exit. I got off the highway and it died about a block later. Luckily I was only .3 miles from work and pushed it to the parking lot, but on the WRx I used to ride 40-50 miles on the reserve and on the FZ I remember pushing 40 as well.

20 miles is a really late reserve... if you run out in the middle of nowhere you're screwed.
Title: Re: I'm back on a Honda.
Post by: MX793 on February 13, 2017, 10:49:20 AM
I don't let the tank get low enough to dip into the "reserve".  I assume a conservative 40-45 mpg and fill up at between 160 and 180 miles.  I generally have about a gallon left in the tank, sometimes 1.25.

I think the light starts blinking at 50 miles to E, but I think I've only once taken it that low.
Title: Re: I'm back on a Honda.
Post by: Cookie Monster on February 13, 2017, 10:55:25 AM
Yeah, I really should fill up earlier. Usually I reset the trip meter when I refill, but last time the gas pump shut off before the tank was completely full so I didn't know how many miles were in the tank.

My commute is about 70-80 miles round trip each day, so I usually fill up every day and a half. I think my tank is about 3.7 gallons, and I'm usually good for 40-45 MPG, so I could probably push it on short ride days but it's not worth it.

I was just hoping that they'd be willing to cover the bike since it's not like it has to get towed.

One time me and my buddy were pedding and he ran outta gas. Luckily I had a water bottle that we dumped and filled off of my tank to get him back.

Hopefully not.

It might be a good idea to keep a bottle in my backpack for longer trips, though.;

My friend just came by and has one of those fuel bottles strapped to his bike. Should be enough to get me to the gas station.

For longer trips, definitely not a bad idea. I've considered it as well, but I've yet to run into a situation where I've needed it what with 230's insane fuel sippage.  Once I have a bigger bike that drinks fuel though...yeah.

Why is this potato?

$800 exhaust on a $4500 bike with a questionable history owned by a guy who can't own a bike for more than 6 months before swapping.

Definitely potato.

No. Potato is the sound a Harley makes.

I've almost gone an entire year without buying a vehicle.  Rags can't even make it two months these days without getting his fix.

I've been low key lurking on CL for another 954 actually.

If I can find a decent deal on one with less miles in better shape without this questionable history I will do it.

So FWIW, Woodcraft has very, very good customer service. They are the distributor for Hindle in the US, and I emailed them asking if they could get me the setup I wanted even though it wasn't on their site. They emailed back within a few hours saying they could, and follow up emails were responded to within 30 min each time.

Then today the lady called me and just verified everything on the phone. It will be probably the first week of March by the time I get it but it will be so worth it.

Finally got around to buying a new clutch lever, clutch pivot bolt and some crush washers today. I hate the aftermarket clutch lever on there right now so I just bought a stock replacement.

36.5 mpg so far. :praise:

I put the new rear wheel I bought off of eBay on and static balanced it real quick.

Still in love with this bike. I'm just bummed out that I don't get to ride it anywhere other than to work and bike because of all the rain.

I can't wait for summer. My roommate has so many race tire take offs that he said I can just put a set on as my summer tires.

So many haters.

I rode the bike ~250 miles today. The bike is surprisingly comfortable, other than my left wrist bugging me (but it always does because it's still fubar'd).

43.4 mpg on the last tank, since I thought I was close to running out of gas (I really don't trust the light) and rode it super gently to the gas station.

I would love a 2012+ CBR1K. Maybe sometime in the future.

I did something crazy last night and put a new stock clutch lever back on. I don't think I've ever replaced an aftermarket part with a stock part before. :O
