QuoteHonda revealed at last its all-new weapon, the Civic Type R, featuring for the first time a turbocharged 2-litre VTEC engine.
Under the bonnet we find the newly developed 2-litre VTEC turbocharged engine, making 310PS (306hp) at 6500rpm and 400Nm (295lb ft) of torque at 2500rpm. Zero to 62mph (0-100km/h) comes in 5.7sec with a best-in-class top speed of 167mph (270km/h). The rev-limiter is set at 7000rpm.
Honda has equipped the Civic Type R with a trick front suspension dubbed "Dual Axis Strut" and a limited-slip differential. Based on a McPherson setup, the Dual Axis Strut has an additional steering knuckle in order to reduce torque steer by up to 50% compared to a standard Civic, claims Honda. The dampers are now adaptive and the electric steering is specially tuned for the Type R.
The hottest of the Civics features for the first time a "+R" driving mode. By pressing a button, you get a more aggressive torque delivery, increased engine response, stiffer dampers by 30% and reduced assistance on the steering.
The 19in wheels are housing specific for the Type R Brembo brakes, measuring 350mm at the front, with four-piston calipers.
Honda has tuned the Civic Type R in places like Suzuka and Nurburgring race tracks, with Honda chasing the record for the fastest front wheel drive car to lap the latter, which means beating the Renault Megane RS 275 Trophy R's 7:54 time.
The most hardcore Civic of them all wants the FWD crown of its segment and judging by looks alone, it looks angry enough. The new Type R wears a very aggressive body kit that is designed not only to make the car look meaner but also to increase downforce. The almost flat underside aids the big rear diffuser in increasing the grip while the large fixed wing has been shaped to provide usable downforce without creating too much drag. It makes us sad though they sacrificed the evil taillights of the concept.
Honda will reveal tomorrow at its official press conference if the new Civic Type R has broken the Nurburgring's record or not, but something tells us that we have a new king.
What happened to this?
Tame. Not enough surface drama. Needs, like, two more tiers of rear spoilers.
fried rice
Looks a little bit like the Aztek at the rear.
The news here isn't this god awful torsion beam dodgeball... it's the engine. I will talk more about this later.
Like I was saying the news here is the engine. I expect to see the 2.0T replace the V6 in everything but the MDX and RLX. I also see a detuned version of this in the next Civic Si here.
I don't think the loss of the V6 will be that big of a deal. Honda is on another level with engine design so they will make good on the promises of turbocharging. And V6s do sound better when the exhausts are configured perfectly (i.e. 2 separate 3 banger streams with just enough muffling).... but in something like an Accord V6 they don't sound much better or different from a 4 banger. Turbo will muffle the sound and I bet most folks won't even notice the difference.
I'm still an NA advocate but the range of where turbo motors work better on the street is undeniably wider. At a sea level track day give me NA all day. But for the street it's hard to downplay turbos.
I wonder if it can do cool fake fwd donuts like the altima does in the new Nissan commercials...
Jesus Christ that thing is garish and ugly. What happened to the clean styled Type Rs of the past?
Plus, they lost the only cool feature of the concept - the taillights. Fail.
Blech, keep it over there.
I didn't see where they mentioned what kind of diff honda put in the rear. Is it a LSD also?

306 hp, FWD only, 0-60 in a lethargic 5.7 seconds...
The Focus RS will kick it in the nuts and steal its lunch money. I also hate the 4 door only trend. These cars look stupid with 4 doors.
I like the 4 door look.
As for the focus, aren't they going AWD on the next model. Much like the next speed 3 will be awd.
Honda coming in late to the game when everyone else has moved onto another.

I wouldn't put much stock in a 0-60 number. Honda just announced that it was able to hustle a prototype on production specs through the ring in 7 minutes 50 seconds too. If the RS does beat it, I doubt it'll be by much.

Yea especially a manufacturer supplied time.
Not to mention FWD sucks from a dig. From a decent roll (40MPH+) I'm guessing the Civic will walk (not run)
It sounds so good!!!

Thank you for not posting the pictures. I was purposefully not updating the thread because fuck all pictures of the new Civic hatch
Not only do I like its looks, I really want one
Although I could definitely do without the stupid vent over the front wheel arch
Wow. This makes the Focus RS look like a clean-lined two button suit. What a mess!
I legitimately got sad looking at pics of the new car and then of the EK9 and DC2 posted in the comments. :(

Well there's 3 exhaust exist on the Type-R presumably just for this purpose
The volume control is terrible. The seat height adjuster is super flimsy. The door armrest is a hard plastic with a super thin neoprene like covering. It feels bigger than the 2000 accord I drove for a few weeks in England. The driving position is too high.
I loved the new Civic, but it is a big car.
It's really fun to drive
It's a shame they punish you with its looks. Mechanically/dimensionally/build quality wise it's all brilliant. I wonder how they are selling.

(Bump) but Honda stopped selling the Civic entirely in Japan back in 2009, I think.
Civic Si first drives have started trickling out. Overall, I'm pretty underwhelmed. 25K and the same power it's made since like 2006. I think that Honda hamstrung the Si to keep all focus on the R, but as a US only model, they really missed an opportunity to make something special. Oh well, I expect this to keep value of my '13 nice and high :ohyeah:

I believe they continued to sell the hybrid and high performance versions. When the platform grew in width for the 8th (?) generation, it no longer could be classified as a compact in Japan, so they dropped the bread and butter models.

Power sounds underwhelming, but it sounds like the chassis is excellent. Given the fat torque curve, I expect it will be quicker than the 2.0 and 2.4L cars.
I have a hard time wrapping my head around needing to short shift an Si Honda @ 6000 RPM to maximize performance...

Yeah, I don't think Toyota sells the ROW Corolla in Japan. They sell the Corolla Axio, but I think that's not even really mechanically related to the Corolla we get. (I think it's a long Yaris)
(They sell the Auris/Corolla Hatch in Japan, but not the Corolla Sedan)
I am optimstic on the Si. It's going to feel faster than the 9th gen around town, and the chassis + steering is definitely better. Also has a God honest mechanical LSD. I'm just bummed they didn't make it a 2.0L or even a 1.8L. The turbo on the non-Si 1.5T is close to tapped out with any kind of tuning. Would have been nicer with more displacement.
But the looks are still ghastly. The extra $$$ and reliability uncertainty of the GTI are a worthy cost for the better looks and bigger displacement at this point in time. All us Honda boiz are waiting with baited breath for that mid model facelift.
Ghastly indeed, it's all vents and creases!

13 and up Si's hold their value incredibly well and that will continue. It's a great starter platform with cheap mods and a stout engine.

Chassis and steering sound excellent. Although it also comes with unnaturally aggressive tires for a Honda.
In talking with 2.0L guys, the 2.4 cars are deemed inferior. Honda f'ed up by not adjusting the gearing when they went to a lower redline motor. Former regional Auto-x champ had a 2.0L car and replaced it with something. When I asked if he considered a newer Si he said he had zero interest in the 2.4L car.
The 2.0 cars are a bit more aggressive out of the factory too. Honda calmed down the Si a lot, especially the lame duck MY12 which they didn't even try on. Still, I'm more concerned on value, and I don't see my Si losing any because of the 2017 models.
Real Honda boiz swap gears out in their K series transmissions. Buy an Accord/Element 5 speed, get 6 speed kit, build ratios from elsewhere, get an M-Factory LSD, profit.

No offense, but I just don't see that being the case. This Si, aside from the horsepower, seems like it's way way better than the old one. This new Civic is leaps and bounds better than the old one.
None taken. More often then not, the engine is the most important part of a car like this and what anyone ends up remembering. I don't know where the 1.5T will land when the tuners are done with it, and early Hondata results look promising from the hatch, but all motor K24's are regularly putting down 235-250 and supercharged examples are reliably getting 330+ without going to extremes. We'll see how much room this new guy has, but I feel like Honda purposely kept it back so that it doesn't every land on the toes of the R.
I'm expecting to see 230whp be the norm for a well tuned Si now with typical breather mods and tune
Things that give me hope are that I know the aftermarket for this thing will be robust and that the Si engine is loaded with tech (IIRC, dual VVT and VVL, along with DI I think?). Thing that makes me sad is it's underbore and very narrow... so more displacement is not likely. Hopefully Honda makes an L20 in the future, or puts a version of the CTR's 2.0L in the Accord/Pilot/Odyssey etc. to enable swappery
Were you really planning on buying a brand new Civic Si and boring it out? Or buying a new Accord/Pilot/Odyssey, and swapping a Civic Si engine into it?
Seems kind of strange to be "sad" over such weird fantasies.

QuoteIf you're lucky enough to get ahold of a new Honda Civic Type R and want to dress up the hot hatch with some official accessories, then check out the pricey extras that Honda is offering customers in Japan.
Give the CTR some red accents by adding a three-piece garnish over the grille and upper part of the headlights for the equivalent of $293 (at current conversion rates). Honda also offers a replacement $1,564 carbon fiber rear wing with a crimson polyester weave for a dash of color at the back. For an extra splash of color, buyers can pick from Crystal Black Pearl or Red mirror covers for $137 each. A set of yellow LED fog lights go for $308.
As a replacement for the attractive stock wheels, Honda has a set of 18-inch forged pieces for $2,445. They are the same 8.5-inch width as the parts that come on the Type R.
Inside, buyers can spend a lot of money on accessories. An aluminum shift knob with red leather covering costs $181. If you think a dealer in the United States charging $298 for Type R floor mats is bad, it hardly compares to Honda pricing a set for the equivalent of $577. The company also offers red-tinged carbon fiber trim for the dashboard ($440), center console ($254), and door panels ($420). The company offers red LED accent lights for the footwell ($98), door pockets, and handles (combined $127).
In the United States, the CTR starts at $34,775 including destination. Its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder produces 306 horsepower (228 kilowatts) and 295 pound-feet (400 Newton-meters) of torque. The only available gearbox is a six-speed manual because an automatic would allegedly make the hot hatch too heavy.

There's a reason the factory sets the wheels back so they are fully under the fenders. If you drive on any gravel or stone & oil roads, you quickly understand the pitfalls of hella flush.

Something I deal with frequently! Being set in a touch really helps keep the spray (of whatever) down.

A lot of roads around here, many the twisty back roads, a paved in crushed stone and oil. They're fine after it's been laid down for a while and traffic has packed it down, but when fresh, the fine gravel is still quite loose and will get flung by your tires. I ran across a fresh one this past weekend on the motorcycle that put a damper on my fun.
They can sell a sunken battleship wheel package for those folks then.
They should just make extended studs standard so people can run fat spacers to get the look they want. A lot of times spaced out OEM wheels look so good.
Those wheels save 4.6lbs each of the stock ones
