Title: Did you know that Yugo........
Post by: Mustangfan2003 on November 30, 2013, 08:36:10 AM
How did this ad not lead to millions of sales?

Old Yugo commercial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VV9NOBYDC4#)

BTW I had a mechanic tell me one time he bought one of these for under $100, spent about $50 in parts, and sold it for $300.  Not a bad flip.

There used to be a guy who was a regular at the Wednesday night drags at Milan who ran one or two of those. He had one that was in the mid 13s itch the stock engine and heads, naturally aspirated.

Went by the name of "Dave Yugo."

What did he race against, lawn mowers?

God, I love those cheesy 1980s commercials. Absolutely hilarious to watch these days.

I guess I'll get a pat on the back when I claim that "1974 Dodge Monaco > Yugo". Right?  :praise:

The Dodge might be slightly more reliable but they both rust away just as fast.

I'm sure being featured in the Dragnet movie got them a bunch of sales.

They get faster in racing because all the parts start falling off during a race.

What's the best way to make quick cash on your Yugo?

Take it to the scrap yard.

My former dealership sold these things in the 80's before my time being there. I was told horror stories about just how bad these cars are. The dealership sold them for some time and then quit it was so bad.

I think a Chevy dealer sold them here.  Not sure if they had any buy a Chevy and get a free Yugo deal like some other dealers out there did.

I might give it a try on Monday!

I think I saw someone post on jalopnk and say it's just an operator saying "this number is not available"  Thought maybe it would take you to some porn hotline.

Damn, I was going to request a brochure!

Oh well.  At least there is somebody who's still supplying parts for Yugos.  I'm sure all three of his customers are very grateful!

Could an ultra cheap car work in the US, like the Nano?  The 3 wheeled car I posted in the mainstream section was kinda neat but would people buy it?

They also represent Zastava. Did not someone here work on a suspension for them? Camiro I think was his name.

Something like Dacia would probably work better.

Actually, if you go to the Balkan states, you will still see a surprising number of these (and the later cars called Skala)....... so I would guess that global survival is far greater for the Yugo than it is for the 1974 Dodge Monaco. (sorry, CW!).

It doesn't take many individual customers to keep a Yugo parts supply company in business. They'll keep coming back.

Question is why would anyone still have a Yugo in the first place?  It would be interesting for a museum but that's about it.

Why not? Beats collecting Commemorative Elvis figurines.

I think, unlike in some countries, you can't have ultra cheap new cars in the US because of the cost of required safety features. Airbags (front, side impact, side curtain), anti-lock brakes, stability control, would probably double the cost of a Nano.

That can all be avoided by filling he car worth foam packing peanuts.

NATO?

Err, no.

The Yugo factory was largely destroyed in the Bosnian conflicts in the early 1990s, but I think you will find that it was the Serbs who were officially deemed to be the culprits for the destruction of Bosnia.

Believe it or not, things like those are actually legal requirements in most of the rest of the world as well.

Well, if most doesn't include India, China, Africa, pretty much all of Asia outside of Japan, Eastern Europe...

NATO did flatten it though.

Having lived through the early days of Honda, and had a Honda 1200 for a daily driver, the Yugo wasn't any worse of a car. If it had a problem, it was a vehicle that wasn't ahead of its time, but was behind the times.

The Yugo factory was in Serbia, not Bosnia. The factory was bombed by NATO in the late '90s. As I understand it there was a weapons factory right next door and that's why NATO bombed the complex.

Fiat bought the factory and Zastava is now Fiat Serbia, where they build the 500L.

An increasing number of countries do have the requirements. Brazil, for instance, which is the largest Latin American market, now requires antilock brakes and frontal airbags. Argentina as well.
