Title: If you won the lottery...
Post by: SVT666 on September 25, 2008, 05:34:17 PM
If you won the lottery, what would be the very first car you would buy and how would you go about buying it?

I would go into a Dodge dealer wearing ratty cutoff jeans, an old AC/DC t-shirt, unshaven, and I would tell the first salesman I see, I want a Viper.

It would be the 1965 Dodge Dart about half a mile down the street from me. The guy wants $6500 for it.

Seriously, I figured out long ago that there are a lot of reasonably priced cars that I would love to own, and would probably enjoy more than an exotic. I've always had this fantasy of having a collection of ten to fifteen cars that cost in total no more than a couple hundred thousand.

Kind of sounds like what I would want to do, with the exception of wanting to buy one used exotic-ish car a '96 911 Turbo , and a used 2003 NSX. Otherwise the rest of them would land in the reasonable range.

Better yet, dress up, and have a couple of personal shoppers with you, head to the nearest BMW dealership and demand a test drive in an Aston Martin DB9. When the salesman either becomes puzzled or wants to correct you, have your personal shoppers go hypersonic on him, rattling on about how they thought that this was a "reputable luxury dealership ", then all three of you  storm out briskly with your noses tilted upwards.

Then a few 'parts cars' and have someone totally rebuild it for me-

I only want one new "exotic," anything else would be used (though the used car I want costs more than the new "exotic" I want).

I just want an Aston V8 Vantage. Then I'd pay off my bills, and go looking for a 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso.

I have no idea at all. Part of me would want something exotic like a F430 or Aston. But the realistic side of me would be happy with something as simple as a Cayman S or Z06.
It depends on how much money I got in the first place. One car I know I'd go find is a 93-95 FD RX-7 and restore it to the way it was new. I love that car.

I'd also like to build a car like this for fun. I'm thinking of doing it one day even without the lottery.

I don't really see the need for them in cloth seats, at least for relatively mild DC winters. I could probably put the $350 or whatever it is to better use.

EDIT: TDIs don't seem to offer cloth seats. I'll make that a 5-door Rabbit.

I'd withdraw roughly $60-65k in cash, stuff it into a duffel bag, and then spill it all on the hood of the first 2009 CTS-V I see at the Cadillac dealer. Then I'd drive it over to West Coast Customs and have them paint it matte black and limo tint the windows.

Then I'd use it to go house hunting.

The first one I'd buy would be something nice and practical. A good daily driver. I'm leaning toward a Suzuki SX4 JLX AWD. Maybe a Saab 9-3 wagon if I splurge. I'd walk in to a dealership in my normal, everyday clothes, point to the one I want, and tell a salesman to start writing up an agreement.

The second would be a Lamborghini Gallardo. I'd buy that one with a briefcase full of cash, just because I could.

I'd take a cab to my dealer, smoking, with my sunglasses on, dressed as I usually do (jeans, polo shirt), and refuse to put my cigarette out or take my sunglasses off.  Then I'd open up my messenger bag, full of cash, point to the car I want, and say "I'll take that one, if it's a stick."

I'm thinking 911 Turbo Cabriolet.  I need a convertible.

Meteor Gray , blue soft top
Black painted wheels ($1,815)
Leather sport seats ($1,575)
Black leather interior
PCCB ($8,840)
Rear LSD ($950)
Sport Chrono Pack ($1,920)
Electronic Logbook ($650)
Bluetooth ($695)
Universal Audio Interface ($440)

$157,695.00

I would probably indulge my tastes for ecclectic, outside the mainstream cars.  Maybe start by buying excellent examples of cars I used to own: Fiat X-1/9, Peugeot 505 Turbo, Merkur XR4Ti.  Then I'd start finding others that I wished I owned but never did: Renault Fuego, Lancia Beta coupe, "Sterling by Rover" 827 Vitesse, Peugeot 405 Mi16, Alfa Romeo 164, Merkur Scorpio, 1980's grey market Citroen CX GTI Turbo 2.

Once I've exhausted all the oddball cars sold in the US, I'd start importing others that never made it over.  Peugeot 205 GTI, Citroen BX, Lancia Thema 8.32 Ferrari, various MG Rover products, etc.  I'd have more fun with these than a garage full of Ferraris. Lambos, Bentleys and Bugattis.

Cheers,
Madman of the People

The reason I went Aston, then Ferrari, instead of something practical is because I already HAVE something reasonably practical and cheap, so winning the Lottery would not instantly make that car go away. ;)  Free money means looking at cars I couldn't already afford.

Just to get it out of my system i would have to go out and buy something right away. Literally i'd go straight from the lottery office(if the funds where deposited into my bank) and go to the local german megaplex(not really that big). I'd walk into the mercedes/porsche dealership and buy SOMETHING, doesn't matter i know of a few i'd take.

Either way the point is that by the end of the day i'd have a  new 911 turbo/GT2/GT3 or Mercedes E63AMG/S65AMG/ETC. If they had nothing i would just go to the downtown luxo place and get a aston or lotus or anything exotic and fast or just a good old BMW M car.

I'd bust a move on the STI, trade the WRX for an Outback XT, and stick the wife in a Jetta TDI for general commuting/dog hauling.  Then I would ride home in an XB12 Lightning, just to top it off.

(After paying off my current mortgage and possibly laying down cash on a nicer house first).

I don't know why you mentioned the raty clothes and ac/dc shirt. You wouldn't throw them off since that's what most viper buyers wear anyway.

Throw on a thousand dollar suit and a rolex and go look at a viper, they'll wonder what the hell your doing in a chrysler dealership buying a cramped slapped together glorified kit car for 100K.

Depending on how much the lottery winnings are.  If it's over 50mil after tax, then I would go into some dealer, and point to one or two models I don't want, and then say, this, this, I don't want, and give me one of all the other models else in black.

Well, the first "set" of cars I would buy would essentially be at the same time, so here goes:

For my mom - 2009 BMW 335i convertible, fully loaded
For my step-mom - http://motorcars-of-georgia.ebizautos.com/detail-2008-lotus-elise-supercharged-3413813.html
For my dad - 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera S

For myself - 2009 M3 Sedan and 2009 Cayman Boxter S

As time went on, I'd start looking for some more collector cars. I'd like to own one of each gen M3, a 2002, Ferrari Dino, 993 Turbo.

This is all assuming that I won some asinine amount of money. If it were "only" a few million, I'd be much more conservative.

EDIT: Scratch the Cayman S. I need a convertible.

When in doubt, go Firemist.

As for the main question, I'd head out straight away and find an XW Falcon GTHO Phase II in red, silver or the very rare olive green with black bonnet. Then, I'd buy this 1963 Pontiac LeMans (http://www.australianmusclecarsales.com.au/muscle_view/101725) for its wonderful '60s simplicity, classic good looks and rarity compared to early Mustangs and Camaros. Finally, I'd search for a marvellous '70s Cadillac; I'm not yet sure what model (let alone colour and trim combination), but it would certainly be big, bold and luxurious.

How heavenly.

Depends on how much I win. If its some outragous amount ZR1,LP-640s,430s,#s matching 1970 Chevelle SS LS6 and any Aston will be the first cars I pick up. If it's only a couple million I'll take a GSXR 750,a drop top Vette and a AMG CLS Benz.

2. The sports car for spirited drives: Ferrari F430 convertible

I'd get something simple like a new S4 or old RS4.... then dump $10-15k in the RX-8 to make it everything I always wanted it to be

....actually I have the money to dump in the RX-8 now..... and I should make my dreams come true with it.... but I'm a cheap bastard and can't justify it

I don't know what car I would want first.

Maybe a GT3 slate grey with black wheels. Maybe a F430 spyder with a manual trans. Maybe pick up a Carrera GT. Definently not a Veyron though.

I told my wife last night that if we won the jackpot last night ($35 Million), that I would buy a DBS.

She said, "How much is it?".

I said, "$300,000 CDN".

She said, "That's too expensive"

I said, "We'll still have $34,700,000 left over".

She said, "Oh yeah".

Gray over cocoa with a blue top and black wheels?  I'm not entirely sure that cocoa is available with the sport seats, though.

EDIT:  Cocoa works with the sport seats.  But I'm not sure of the brown leather.

I saw cocoa with seal grey once and it looked amazing. It's a very deep brown and it contrasts well with the aluminum trim. I'm not sure how it would go with a blue top and black wheels though.

I think I'd spare no expense on a 2001, 500 hp, STi wagon conversion to recreate my hero car from Gran Turismo 2 (using my current chassis or not depending on how structurally sound it is).  BTW, I had that car long before I bought my real-life battle wagon.

Indeed.  I'd scour the classifieds for a 65 Shelby GT350, but after the 911 Turbo.

I'd also get an E36 328is for turning into a track car.  An Elise, too.  And others.  But the 911 Turbo cabriolet (Meteor Gray/Black with black wheels and a blue top with PCCB) comes first.

How heavenly.

omicron:  OmiDude!  Yeah, a spotless '63 Pontiac Tempest LeMans coupe would be a heckuva place to start--looking back over the decades, it's sorta sad that the '64 Tempest went up in size--the '64 GTO woulda been even badder on the smaller '63 Tempest chassis!  You have a sharp eye, OmiDude!

The '66 Bronco needs some work, and lottery millions could ease my pain!

First, I'd get a twenty-four bottle case of fresh Negra Modello

Then, I'd learn how to professionally weld--not the welding as I currently mis-practice the skill.  I'd add a heli-arc set-up to my current equipment and gain some competence with that hardware, too.

After that, I'd get a quality tubing cutter, stand mounted, and enough tubing to teach myself to cut tubing professionally.

I'd follow that up with a tubing bender, and more tubing to get the technique really down cold.

(Look for the price of steel tubing and chrome-moly tubing to go way, waaaayyy up)

Then I'd twirl my mustache while eyeing the Bronco malevolently, and watch it squirm as I slowly turn the valve on the acetylene tank...

BU-WA-HA-HA-HA-HA!!!!! :heated: :heated: :heated:

Besides, considering the condition of my current daily driver replacing it would be my first priority anyway, even if I had somewhere to put a 2nd car.

No, actually.  It was Crewe designed completely, but the engines were sourced from BMW because they knew they weren't going to be around for much longer.  VW made a counter offer (unexpectedly to everyone), BMW countered, raised it, VW then had an ultimately kickass offer, then BMW went out from under them and bought the rights to the Rolls-Royce name without any of the factories.

It's a weird situation.

If you won the lottery, what would be the very first car you would buy and how would you go about buying it?

1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 L89.  Shadow Gray.  Black interior.

Why not a 454 LS6?

The SS 396 L89 is more common and, I would guess, more readily available for purchase.  That and the 396 had a history of better reliability, even though by 1970 it was actually a 402 V8.

I wasn't aware that B-J had 454 LS6's in such large quantities.  The car wasn't sold in large numbers when it was new, making it the rarest of '70 Chevelles.  I don't see "plenty" of them being available now unless they are "tribute" cars.  I don't want a tribute car.  Remember there were also LS5 Chevelles that had the lower-output version of the 454.

I assume you're referring to Fathom Blue for the color of yours?  Nice choice.  But I would not turn down Cranberry Red, Fathom Green, Cortez Silver, Tuxedo Black or Olympic Gold.

Did the SS454's come with a stick shift?

Yeah I'm pretty sure, don't know how common they were on the LS5 but I don't think they were very common for the LS6.

Old muscle cars are best with automatics.

Very True! The '70 Chevelle 454s (LS-6 not LS-5) were available with 4 speed manuals. They even made a few (IIRC 12 of the 25) LS-6 conv. manuals also.

IIRC I saw at least 5 #'s matching 1970 LS-6 Chevelles (all hardtops) this year. There was a total of 4,475 (out of the 62,372 SS Chevelles were produced in 1970) LS-6s produced in 1970.

I change my mind.

Prodrive P2, I'd have them build me one.

Meh. Not really. If you get a good manual then it's better.

There was no such thing as a good manual in 60s muscle cars.

Would you register it as a Subaru R2 or an Impreza or what?  Without Ben Franklin and a few of his friends lobbying for you, it might be tough.

The 4 spd in my El Camino doesn't seem bad. Maybe not brand new Honda good, but good.

Have them build it without an engine and transmission, register it as a kit car.

Yeah.  For months now.  I saw one on the road yesterday.
