Outside of the political forum you mean.
It will have 4 wheels, be donor car based and tip the scales at around 1400lbs.
Please god tell me it's not an Exocet
It is not an exocet.
Will have a miata motor (turbod for hopefully 350hp) though. Bringing the donor car home this weekend.
Alright. That's it. I'm convinced.
Either you sell drugs on the side, or this is the most elaborate set of lies ever told. Your collection is fucking insane.
Also, my guess is a Caterham type.
I kind of want it to be a Catfish from Flyin Miata though.
Gotta be a Caterham.

Iron Duke goodness
Those good looks AND an iron duke?
Overkill, too much awesome in one package.
Just to verify, it is not a chassis donor kit. All new frame, some fiberglass, some aluminum, some carbon.
This from a guy who doesn't like to work on cars, huh?
I like driving them, a lot, sometimes you have to make sacrifices.
You selling anything to make room? Or is this just toy #4 or 5 now?

I'm selling that mustang i bought just to get it out of the way, otherwise everything else stays.

I'll take some more this weekend when I start some teardown.

Approve.
I bought the donor car for 500 dollars. So that leave plenty of room for rods, pistons, some other engine work(all new seals, studs, headgasket) and what not. Going to probably just get a bare bones FM kit and run a megasquirt.
Simple target, using nice round numbers is 350HP(crank) and 1500lb curb weight. Should be fun.
:golfclap:
I approve. Which kit are you using?
the mx5 donor kit, in classic form, from stalker cars.
Color? Also, I want to see a fully fledged Gantt chart with milestone timing please
I haven't decided on color yet, maybe pewter/light goldish frame and pearl blue for the panels.
Awesome

You have no concept of my internal battles. I'm getting a fat VA cheque sometime in the early fall, and my short list is thus:
a) Fiat Spider $35,000
b) FFR Cobra winter build $35,000
c) Used Boxster S $35,000
d) Lotus 7 winter build $25,000
You got me leaning towards option D now. After all, the idea is a cool toy, and I've always wanted to build a car.
Got the donor home. 2002 Miata SE. 90k, 6 speed transmission and the stock torsen diff. Good donor. Added pics to the first post.

It was switched pretty good, a bit harder than I thought. As of now it looks like everything is fine. It runs and drives with no interference or issues.
Here's a good image to show how far that rail made it. Have all the upper and lower cut away, and a partial cut on the rail. But you can see the front of that rail is inline with the center of the motor. Still, it starts and runs with no interference.
Once I get that rail chunk out I'll have the cooler out of the way and I can see if anything is damage, but I'm pretty sure it's all fine.

As for the cladding, it's the SE so it got the appearance package. My 99 10th anniversary has a similar(albeit toned down) kit. Didn't like it at first, but with some new (wider) rims and a bit of a drop.

Something similar, I think I picked out a fiat blue pearl at work from the color decks. But it would almost be the same color as my miata.
In my mind, matte light gold structure with pearl white (gloss or matte) with a pair of red seats is "looking" pretty sweet to me.

BRG FTW
Metallic magenta
I will never paint anything brg, ever.
Red wine/purple. Unless that would be too close to your truck.
With medium tan/camel seats
I like the gold frame idea
You should look into a magnesium grey/gold.... not sure what the color code is but it looks good

If you were European, you would understand.
With a silver/pewter frame, the dark blue Suzuki offered on the Bandit (my Bandit was this color) could work well. Kind of subtle shade, though. Doesn't really pop like a brighter blue. Sometimes looks like a bluish graphite.

So, I'm actually entertaining a exocet as an alternative.
I don't know what to say. I don't know if I fell out of bed sunday night and hit my head or something, but monday I was looking at some stuff online and I seem to like it(or hate it less, whatever).
Don't know what else to say about that.
Why bother with a Miata powertrain in an Exocet if they can fit an LS? :mask:
Always in awe of your projects. If I had the time and the money........I'd still need to put in the 10,000 hours of skill building that is obvious you have accumulated. Way to go.
So what your saying is.

Quote from: MrH on July 29, 2016, 08:57:17 AM

I don't know, I'm going to look into it a bit more, and try to get under my donor to see if there is any damage to the subframe(since that will be needed for a exocet). I'm certainly kicking it around, at this point I'm truly on the fence about which one to go with. Hopefully I can make a decision and still get this thing ordered up here soon.
At this point, there is nothing stopping me from ordering other than deciding on exactly which one I want. A plus, for me, is that I can deal with exocet direct or FM. I've dealt this FM in the past on several occasions and I"ve always been very happy. So if I go with an exocet through them, I'll know that I can get a lot of help and knowledge from them regarding the kit or any modifications.
Hurry up and build something and get bored with it so I can buy it for pennies on the dollar. I don't care which one you pick.
You mean for dollars on the penny, right?
Nein.
Apparently Flyin Miata actually sells turn key exocets. Non-turbo and you need to supply the donor car, but $24k didn't sound like a bad deal.
I figure I'll have around 15k into a done exocet with around a 300hp turbo motor. Maybe a bit more(16/16.5K).
I'll buy it from you when you're done for $16k.
You know what, I'll write your name down on a piece of paper and keep that in mind.
If you get an Exocet, I'll be disappoint.

I don't know. Did you see Matt Farah's drive of an Exocet? He actually liked it better than an Ariel Atom. It's a really good deal
But it's so ugly. I can't imagine it drives that much better than a Caterham.
I bet it can!
Meh. You can make them look ok. They'll never be pretty though
Exocet is tipping the scales as of the moment.

Depends on scrounging ability and desire to use new parts. You can spend just the $7499 base price and use scrounged parts, or the sky's the limit with new parts and performance mods. $15,000 is a reasonable/realistic budget though.

That does look pretty cool, the sport with the windshield doesn't look bad either. It helps having something in front to fill in that area(without the races full roll bar).
The only issue with the race version is getting in and out would be a pain.
I prefer the half cage version
I am def 100% Exocet. FBC is a body guy, he can probably just fab up sick high quality body parts to cover it up. They should make some kind of full body panel kit for it though.

That's a pretty cool kit, they should have focused on some better donors though. Nothing about a GM 4 cylinder is exciting. I'm sure there's power to be had, but it will have the worst NVH of anything out there.
2.2 EcoTechs are almost as cheap as lawnmower engines, are cheap and easy to mod, and who really cares about NVH in this application (not that it's really bad anyway). The modular engine/tranny/subframe/suspension all-in-one install design of this kit is pretty slick.
The last thing I'd want in a light weight race inspired kit would be a motor that doesn't want to rev or sounds like I'm crushing ice cubes in a blender beyond 4K. Otherwise, it's a fantastic kit. Really don't know why they picked the eco, I'm sure base civic's or base RSX's are just as cheap and easy to come by, with a vastly(VASTLY) better motor and transmission.
So the order is placed, and I went with the exo.
I've either warmed up to it, or somehow starting looking at it(subconciously) through a different light.
Some of the benefits are that it's cheaper, and will require less work(supposedly), another benefit is that the cockpit is roomier than a miata, whereas the lotus kits are equal to or in some cases less spacious that a miata. Greater mazda componentry is also a nice plus.
I ordered a sport kit, with some options(steel floors, wiring tray, windshield, wing mount, fenders). Kit is under 9K, with my 500 donor and i'd guess similar shipping cost, it looks like I've got the basics for just under or right at 10K. I could have a running driving car for that, but I'll want to upgrade some things(turbo) and replace some of the stock parts(wheels, shocks, seats). I think 15k is real reasonable, and for that I should have a 350HP 1400lb car, hopefully by next summer.
I'll post some pictures of the donor disassembly, and of course when I get the kit. Sounds like it will be about 4-6 weeks out.
:ohyeah:
Right choice IMO. Driving a pretty car is overrated, especially when you've got over 400HP/ton and less than a ton body weight with the driver. When you get bored with this hit me up
Someone should make one of these kits with a wide array of engine mounts.
You can fit LS motors in these too. The problem is, you're basically doing twice the sourcing work. You still need a miata for a ton of things, then need to source a new engine, transmission, diff, half shafts, etc.
I'd be happy with a turbo miata example. Also, I already called dibs on this thing when he's bored with it.

Ya, I think a V8 in this would be a waste of time, because it would add on atleast 10K to the build cost. Plus, with a nice turbo kit, like FM's you end up with:
"but with an FM II turbo system, the car has a power to weight ratio that matches a Ferrari Enzo"
So I could have that, or I could spend another 10 to 12K, do twice the work for an unequal increase in performance.

Because the Eco is a fantastic tuning base with a massive following. Also, donors are dirt cheap. A similar year Civic donor (say a 2006) might still cost $5-6000 while a Cobalt/G5/Ion donor could be had for $500-2000. Imagine finding a Cobalt SS donor with the 265 hp 2.0T.
looking on local CL i see a base rsx stick for 2500 bucks, and a type S for 4000. Running driving titled cars. I'm sure wrecked donors would be 1K to 2K.
Would be much more interested in that kit if it used something honda based.

FlatBlackCaddy was the name of a troll account from back in the "legendary" C&D days. It stuck, and I now use it on car forums that I'm on.
It was a completely randomly selected name.
I peruse the SHOforum for cars every now and again......... :mrcool:

I emailed keith, got an automated response that he will be out of the office/internet range until early october. So I don't know what's going on, just waiting(patiently) for an update. It's not a huge deal, I've got so much work to do it doesn't really affect my time table.

Self employed FTW.
It's a blessing and a curse being able to really choose when you'll be "out of the office."

Hire me full time and I will build it from scratch, then disassemble it into a kit and ship it to you.

It appears damaged. You must have an immediate replacement shipped out. I will haul that pile of garbage away, no charge.

Thanks buddy, you want the donor car too. Free of course. How adout I put 5k in the glovebox for the turbo kit too.
In fact, just swing on by and pick it all up. But don't leave before coming inside for a quick romp with my girlfriend. While you're plowing her, I'll make a nice to go basket with some sandwiches and I'll even throw in a nice 18 year old bottle of scotch too.

Got it unpacked, and inspected all the fiberglass panels for any shipping damage. Other than that have been having a hell of a time finding time to get out in the garage. Looking forward to shutting myself in all day this saturday. Will try to take some pictures, move some stuff around and clean the garage.
This is how FBC died and thus we'll never see pictures

RIP FBC. I look forward to inheriting this kit car.
It's winter up here in the north, and I'm a southerner at heart. I've never been an ambitious man, on the best of days, but 20 below wind chills and dark by 4pm really suck the life right out of me.
I did get some things moved around, and I'm looking to try to get the motor pulled from the donor so I can start rebuilding it. Wish I had more time, and more ambition, I'm sure I'll be all fired up once the snow melts, and I have accomplished nothing over the winter.

I remember, as a teenager, in the middle of a snowstorm in my parents back yard replacing the muffler on my '51 Mercury. Not sure when I loss all that ambition, but I'd go to the car wash now rather than considering washing the car myself. :(

Ya, but, there is like 100 feet between the house and the garage. It's a hurdle that is tough to overcome. Also, garage productivity seemed to fall off once I installed a fridge and green lighted cigar smoking in the garage. So even if I make it past the first hurdle, there is no guarantee that I won't just end up drinking scotch and smoking cigars while watching TV out there.
Lifes hard guys.

Keep the insults coming! If we can demoralize him enough, I can pickup an Exocet for cheap
Has anyone checked on FBC? I'm imagining the Exocet fell on him. His pizza stone and oven just out of reach. Slowly dying of hunger.
Minnesota. Winter. Alcohol. The only thing around him that isn't frozen is his liquor. He'll be back when things warm up.

Possible, but since I'd be in the garage I would fashion a rudimentary grab stick using a vice clamp, broken broom handle, a stock miata sway bar and a section of speaker wire to actuate the clamp. With that, I would be able to reach the workbench where I keep cigars. Surely, after I have a good smoke, I would be able to fall asleep. Then worry about getting out from under the car the next morning.

Would you have to trailer it?
Elise's are $30k and fragile. Exocets are cheaper and likely more fun.
Finding a completed one by someone as detail oriented as FBC would be perfect. Ideally he comes on here, says it's finished, but he needs to make room for the next project and sells it to me

The man bought a 300ZX turbo and survived it just fine. But this is the project that sank him. SAD!
This is the greatest thread in the Garage section.
So I took the 300ZX for a drive finally, after I did all that suspension stuff to it, I believe I talked about that in the Z thread.
The rear end makes a lot of noise, like straight cut gearbox levels of noise. Sure it sounds cool, but I guess I have to take the differential out and adjust it. That's going to set me back anywhere from 2 weeks to 8 months, depending on my productivity level.
I do want to get the exo frame painted before winter so I can move it out of the "booth" side and be able to start to move some things(subframes, I'm probably just going to buy new V8 roadster tubular F/R subs and control arms) onto the exo chassis.
So, like a whole year and all we get is that you took your Z out for a ride.

Actually, this sort of thing is fairly common with garage projects. They start out with a dream, then a slow letdown to reality, then a loss of interest, then abandonment. There's even a show about it on Velocity. ;)
He just sounds lazy .
Just too much on my plate. I still have a lot to do with the other cars. More than enough to keep me busy. That project was taking up 2 to 3 stalls, and represented the most work and the highest cost of completion. It was a no brainer as far as first to go.
Plus I got my money back, so not out much.

They'd never meet federal crash and safety standards. By the time they add in all of the required safety stuff, crash tested in, and federalized it, it would be a much heavier and much more expensive vehicle.

A welded tube chassis can't be mass produced as cheaply as a stamped steel structure. The market just isn't there to support the costs involved.

Motorcycles require a specialized license and operate very differently from an automobile. Someone who has never driven/ridden a bike is unlikely to be able to jump onto a bike and make it very far without some instruction. In contrast, someone who knows how to drive a car can jump into an Exocet or similar and drive off with little issue.
On a related note, I hear about far more ATV and snowmobile fatalities than I do dirtbikes out on the trails. Why? The latter require considerably more skill to operate, whereas the latter can be operated by anybody who's ever operated any kind of motor vehicle before given that they are statically stable and the controls are limited to throttle, steering, and brake.

Which is why they would make you sign a waiver when you buy one. "This thing has no airbags, no crumple zone, and will probably decapitate you a crash with a CR-V... you cool wit dat?" In the UK people DD track specials all over... I saw a few Caterams during the week I was there.
Only issue I see is it could open the door for manufacturers to strip away safety features on regular cars to cut costs.

The argument for motorcycles has always been that they aren't very likely to endanger anybody but themselves. Of course that does happen, but a 500 lb single passenger vehicle does much less damage than a 4000 lb six passenger one.
Motorcycles have been around since before safety regulations which makes them hard to force out of production. It is also very difficult to design safety features into motorcycles so they are essentially grandfathered into the system as an exception to the rules. There is no way that they will allow new mass produced vehicles into the system as exceptions.

Then we can put a weight limit on these things (even better). As low and light as these things are, if there's any kind of vehicle to vehicle contact mosquito car occupants lose. Still way better than a motorcycle.

There are also a lot more ATVs than dirtbikes, at least around here.

And ATVs are a lot easier to ride under the influence of alcohol...no balancing, lots are clutchless shifting.
