If you were that intimidated by a 250 smoker, a 426 probably isn't the best bike for you.  It's not just a matter of intentionally keeping the bike at low RPMs.  Unlike the street, you don't always have the same level of control when the going gets rough (see: "Whiskey Throttle").

I'd recommend looking for a WR426 ignition box.

I've only gone dirt biking twice in my life, and the first time was over two years ago. Sorry I was "that" intimidated by a 250 2 stroke.

I'm mainly scared of going downhill but I think with some practice I will be OK.

I'm not trying to put you down.  Just saying that the 426 is MORE powerful than a 250 smoker, and therefore MORE likely to get you in over your head.  The 426 had near 500 2-stroke power (I've ridden both).  On dirt, if you're not comfortable intentionally going WOT with the bike you're on, it's too much bike for you.  I've spent a lot of time on dirt (from 8 years old until my early 20s).  Rode and raced in the woods, on gravel, baked clay, wet clay, deep muck, ruts up to the footpegs, sand...  Been the victim of Whiskey Throttle numerous times.  One time, the throttle actually jammed wide open on me when I Whiskey Throttled after hitting a bump/dip wrong on a narrow trail in the woods (like barely wide enough for an ATV, too narrow for many side x sides).  Wasn't going that fast nor was I intending to go full throttle, but when the bike dropped into a G-out unexpectedly hard, I ended up twisting the grip when my body soaked up the impact, and then went rocketing off into the trees.  Things can get real in a hurry whether intentional or not.  The "just don't twist the throttle more than halfway" approach that street riders who get a bit more bike than they're really ready for employ doesn't work as well on the dirt.

If you're truly that new to dirt, you really shouldn't be on a 40+ hp machine.  You should be on a 125 smoker or 250 thumper.  But, like I said, the bike is bought.  I would seriously consider getting a WR ignition box for it.  The WR CDI mellows the power of the 426 considerably.

I just don't like the "hit" of the 2 stroke. It was fun to open it up on the uphills but it seemed pretty crappy otherwise. My friend's Husky FE501S was a lot more fun and easier for me to ride since I could just ride it in a gear or two higher and have the torque pull me out of slow spots instead of trying to control a 2 stroke 250.

I definitely would have liked a 250 4 stroke, but again, thanks to California being a dickhead, I can't get a 250 4 stroke without losing half or more of the year. Honda made the CRF250 starting in '04, and the YZ250F and WR250F are hard to find since only the '01-02 model years are green sticker. Really the only way to go riding year round otherwise is to buy a fully plated dual sport (which is also $$$ and heavy), so from my limited options I got what I thought was the best. My roommate having had experience with them also was a plus.

Also, the buyer of the WR250X and the seller of the FZ1 both have YZ426's.

Also, FZ needs a battery. It barely cranked over today morning.

Do I buy a Yuasa OEM replacement for $100 or spend $170 on a lithium Shorai and save 6 lb?

This bike is 485lb wet. It needs to go on a diet. Battery + center stand will lower that to 473lb.

Lugging a 4-stroke is just as hard on the engine as lugging a 2-stroke...

For someone with your experience level who doesn't like 2-strokes, I'd have recommended a later XR250R ('96 or later).  Lighter than a YZ426, mellow power delivery, bulletproof reliability.

Yeah, but if it's not as peaky at least it's easier to manage. I also want to learn to rebuild engines and do more intensive maintenance, which was another reason to get a dirt bike.

Nothing, I just thought it was interesting, since I had never heard of the 426 till after I started looking into them to buy one, and these two guys randomly had them as well. I wasn't trying to use them as to why it was a good idea for me to buy one.

This is a textbook example of Whiskey Throttle

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7V_vhArtaXw

Also happens to first time riders.  They crack the throttle, aren't expecting the power, and just hold on for dear life.

Rebuilding thumpers is expensive.  Hundreds of dollars for a top end.  You can rebuild a 2-stroke for like $100.  Granted, if you want to learn how to adjust valves and such, a 426 is a good place to learn.

Also, if you're interested in working maintenance, I'd start by tearing the rear suspension linkage and steering head apart and greasing all of the bearings.  That was a yearly ritual for me.

QuoteXR's are all a lot older and more expensive than my YZ.

They updated them in '96 and sold through '04 before replacing it with the CRF250.  Yeah, it's an older design, but you're not at the level to really take advantage of what the YZ426 offers above an older XR250.  The 426 is a full-blown, open-class race bike, built to meet motocross homologation rules, intended for experienced racers.

They were kind of a blip.  They only built them for 2 years as a sort of stop-gap between the original YZ400F and the later 450.  Given CA's restrictive offroad limitations, not surprising they're pretty popular there.

Well, it's got a newer head so hopefully it's OK for now. I do want to strip the bike down to the frame over the summer, clean everything up and replace all the bearings/bushings and put it back together.

And yes, the XR (and a number of other bikes) probably would've been better suited for me, but given the restricted market and the decent deal I got for this one ($1250), I'm not going to complain. I also feel like I'm not a complete idiot on a bike and will hopefully be able to manage.

Anyways, it's actually been raining like crazy here yesterday and today. I haven't actually ridden the FZ1 in the complete dry yet, and today it was raining hard enough that intersections started getting flooded. It would've been nice to have more time getting accustomed to a 150 hp motorcycle before having to split lanes at night in the wet, especially coming off of a 30 hp motorcycle, but oh well.

I can't wait till it stops raining so I can try to open it up a bit.

The bars on the YZ were cut down so I've ordered a new bar and No Toil air filter. I also ordered a fuel petcock rebuild kit. Hopefully I don't need too much more in terms of parts to start riding.

So, BMC air filter + airbox mod, AIS delete, Ivan's ECU flash and PowerCommander tune and Yoshimura full exhaust will get me to 150 WHP.

I want to call tomorrow to see how much it'll cost for everything minus the PC (bike came with a PCIII) and then see if I can piece meal it cheaper and just get the ECU flash and tune. I probably shouldn't, but I think it's been well proven that I'm an idiot.

Welp, the battery was toast when I was trying to leave work today. Tried to bump start it but it wouldn't work. A co-worker luckily had some cables and I got it started.

I hope it's just the battery (which I told was original) and not an electrical leak somewhere draining the battery. The battery was still super weak even after I pulled it off the charger this morning.

Time to drop $170 on a new battery. Sigh.

Between yesterday and today I pulled the rear subframe off the bike, took the airbox off and completely cleaned the inside. Took me almost two days of on and off cleaning to clean through that 16 year old dirt.

Put a new air filter in and then installed new Pro Taper handlebars, throttle cables and throttle tube. Still have to put the grips and hand guards on tomorrow. I also rebuilt the petcock but didn't really know what I was doing so we'll see if it leaks or not. :mask:

Also I don't know how to adjust these throttle cables so I have to go mess with them some more tomorrow. Maybe I'll just get my roommates to show me how to do it.
