Title: 3D Car Modeling
Post by: 2o6 on June 12, 2013, 08:52:12 PM
These sketches are done at work, and the 3D model is really rough.

The sketches are done on scrap paper when the shop is slow and I don't have much to do.

I could actually get with this. I have drawn up a few conceptual ideas - a sort of "Commuter sports". Tall gearing and engine for economy and emphasis placed upon handling. Basically a Miata, but more economical.

Quote from: MrH on June 10, 2013, 09:38:23 AM
Just a heads up:  You don't really gear your car for a desired fuel economy.  It's done to match the torque curve of the engine mostly.  You can't take a high, strung out engine and gear it really tall.  Flooring an engine when it's out of it's power band just to accelerate slowly isn't necessarily better for fuel efficiency.

I'm interested to see what you come up with though!  Post it here when you get something sketched up.

I don't have a scanner, so my cameraphone distorts the perspective.

The sports commuter looks pretty good.  Reminds me a little of the Evora.

It appears that your Equinox morphed into an Evoque somewhere along the way...

First sketch is definitely your best.  Looks good!  A little concept-y with how minimal the rear is, but overall shape is really pleasing.

At least it's something different from econoboxes like you usually draw   I still think one of the more challenging, but probably most helpful exercise, would be to try and draw existing vehicles.  It'll take you out of your comfort zone in terms of proportions.  Try some new angles too

I've been doing a few observational sketches while at work. Many of them are off perspective, or destroyed but

Also, I've been experiementing with more complicated surface interactions lately, more delibrate and less accidental. After about 24 hours, I came up with these FWD entry lux thingys

The sedan was the first, just a quick exercise, based upon this profile sketch. Some of the curves are a little blocky, and I'm clueless on what to do with either fascia, but I think it's a good start.

Within the past hour I came up with this

You guys better fucking like it....I took my time and really thought about optimal sexiness. It's sort of a FWD Audi TT competitor. Reads really awkward from other angles, but I think the profile is really sexy.

Lost interest, aside from an empty interior its pretty much done.

Besides, I want to make a better one truer to my sketches anyways. The RWD isn't modeled very well, and a lot of the design is due to the fact I didn't know how to use the program well enough to make it look 100%.

I think it needs a little more glass on the sides.  Makes the Camaro look easy to see out of comparatively.

Just some updates

The MR roadster "commuter sports" is turning into one of my favorite designs I have ever made. Granted, it's is a bit Acura NSX + Lotus Evora + a few other odd ass things, but I feel I am proud of the overall proportioning and the DLO treatment. Keep in mind this is a small car; think MR2 Spyder but hardtop. Or Smart Roadster, but with a real engine and transmission. Power would be very modest; only like 120HP in base form

(http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i87/Vannette_12/mrlady6.jpg) (http://s70.photobucket.com/user/Vannette_12/media/mrlady6.jpg.html)

The FWD Luxo Coupe is also one of my favorites (not just because I love the segment IRL). I'm starting to hate it, though. Reminds me of that old Geely Coupe concept mixed with an old Mitsu FTO. Only thing new about this is the Ford esque gaping maw, and the fact that there's a door now

(http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i87/Vannette_12/pinga4.jpg) (http://s70.photobucket.com/user/Vannette_12/media/pinga4.jpg.html)

Also, I made this Evouque esque styling excercise.

(http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i87/Vannette_12/pinga.jpg) (http://s70.photobucket.com/user/Vannette_12/media/pinga.jpg.html)

I've fooled around with a couple other models, but some of them look like complete trash and I'm not posting them.

Looking at the Smart Roadster wonders if there is room for anything smaller......TO THE SKETCHBOOK

I like small cars. I like small roadsters even more. Something like a Go-Kart, but road legal and stylish. Or a Caterham, but not old.

Here's a bit of a dump of stuff I have been doing lately and generating a portfolio for ID.

Aviva (non Luxury make)

Here's a Compact CUV, about the same size as the CRV, Rogue, RAV4, Escape, etc....

Fast fact: I actually used this old thing as a starting point for the mesh. I have come a long way.

I originally used this as a paint test. Before I Started making a luxury make, I didn't know what I wanted it to look like, and I didn't know what drive wheels I wanted it to have. This was supposed to be a RWD 3-series sized sedan, but I realized I fucked up the proportions, so it looks too FWD (before I decided I wanted a more FWD look for the entry level sedan). It's a nicely proportioned sedan, but I don't know what to do with it

This is the start of my luxury make. Theyve all got a certain styling language going on here. Some of these you've seen before, just a few tweaks to make it right

This is a small Hybrid-exclusive vehicle. Think Lexus HS, but not as ugly. Proportions are not as racy, emphesis is on interior space and this car would likely be based upon a wayy cheaper architecture

This goes against the A4, ATS, 3-series directly. It's FWD.

Industrial design portfolios need several types of products and markets.

No one wants to see a portfolio of supercars; they don't really do too much of anything. Manufacturers want to see how you'd solve their problems, ideas you'd bring to the table. This particular application was a small car - something that is sophisticated yet cheap.

Why must you bust my balls about designing smaller, cheaper cars?

I was playing with having the grille crest above the headlights. Someone said that that look is inherently unpretty. So I experimented to prove them wrong.

Mixed results. It's a little pig nosed, and the headlights look a bit low.

I'm busting your balls because you're not following your own advice.  You say your portfolio needs variety, and yet we keep getting little econoboxes out of you.  I think the best challenge will be to try and recreate something that already exists.  Then make your own creations for each segment.

I like the enthusiasm though.  It's definitely getting better.

I coulda sworn I posted this here

but this model is basically done. I'm trying to model and get better at interiors, but the car is kinda old so I don't want to put energy in it

Quote from: 2o6;476273Aviva has had a name change, and all future Aviva models will be branded "Touox" as well as a new, more conservative styling language.

The Activa is a new sedan, sort of a long, more mechanically robust, more conservative, comfort-based Compact sedan. The Sedan is slightly bigger than cars like the Ford Focus, but not as big as the Mondeo/Fusion. It's a half step car, sort of the same size as the Hyundai Mistra.

In fact, this car goes against many Chinese models such as the Hyundai Mistra, Kia K4, VW Lavida, VW Bora and many others.

Certain markets will get a hatchback or wagon, but the sedan will be the leader in markets like China, Russia, and parts of Eastern and Western Europe. In places like the UK, this car will be primarily a fleet model, coming in one trim.

Power comes from a GDI 1.5L that produces around 135HP, and an upgraded 1.5L turbo that is closer to 165HP. Power goes to the front wheels via a CVT auto or a 6-speed manual. Certain markets will get a cheaper to make 1.8L (no GDI) engine that produces 142HP, mated to a a 6MT or 4-speed auto, again.

Sedan

Also, included is the first use of the Touox-Aviva-Iagei AG FWD modular platform. all platforms have MacPhearson struts up front, and can handle either multilink, solid axle, or twist axle (torsion beam) rear suspensions. AWD is possible on this platform as well, and the chassis is primarily designed for C, D and E segments, although some pieces and design is shared with the smaller A and B segment cars.

The Activa uses a torsion-beam rear axle.

I'm trying to rig this up for BeamNG.

Here's the Trendsetter, a low-cost A-segment car that is more style over substance. Competes with like the Maruti Suzuki Ritz, and other cars like the Ford Figo, and upper trims of the Hyundai Eon, Renault Kwid, etc.

I have a less sophisticated two-box design coming soon.

Power comes from a small 3-cylinder making like 48HP, and "High output" versions that make 80HP.

I've been busy with school.

But here's a "lineup" with the cars I've done. You can see the size differences.

You may not want my input, seeings how I think the pinnacle of auto design is the '59 Chevy or the '60 Falcon  ;), but this vehicle:
may have some merit.
The door sides of it haven't really been addressed before and are actually an original idea.    :ohyeah:  Plus , they would be strong from an engineering viewpoint.

Dude, lose the wide A pillar ridiculousness, and this may be a winner.

That said, I hate modern cars... ;)

Sometimes I look at my old models. And I understand the ergonomic fails etc

But sometimes I like reworking and revising them with my new skills. I took this old thing and remade it into an electric car. After accounting for seating real people, some sembalance of aerodynamics, and suspension articulation, it wouldn't be able to do things like, hold a real engine. Well, it could. But I prefer to think the weird styling would work better as an electric city car; like a Bolt or a Renault ZOE.

All the links are broken.

However, I have REALLY been refining this A-segment trendsetter for my portfolio

I've also been working on keeping a clean polyflow and realistic proportions and I came up with (yet another) b-segment sedan. It's sort of Nissan Versa crossed with an Alfa Giulia.

I also wanted more realistic looking things for my background renders and sometimes my other cars look a little cartoon-y with realistic houses

Is that a computer program? The pictures look like you had these cars "printed" via a 3D printer, and then took photos of your creation. Cool!

I have REALLY REALLY REALLY been pushing realism.

Cars look a lot more boring when you really start considering realism.

Here's a B-segment sedan and hatchback. I'm really working on smoothing and lighting and reflections.

(https://s1.postimg.org/1uxie1k8vj/Boomie.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

(https://s1.postimg.org/4t9shjxnjj/Boomie3.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

(https://s1.postimg.org/6vpl5lx3fz/CVADLA2.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

I also remodeled the City car, and gave it

- More tumblehome (the sides were awkwardly upright)

- Smoother reflections

- Changed the beltline; now it doesn't ascend so fast and is smoother doing so. The old car would have had terrible visibility

- Changed the rear window to a swing out type

- Lowered the lift-over for the all-glass rear hatch

- Shrank the wheels (a little)

- made the hood larger

That roofline comes together to meet the doors a little strangely, but still I'm digging what I'm doing ATM.

IG filters are a lazy way of processing images.

Here they are, not so compressed, after post-processing in Photoshop.

(https://s17.postimg.org/7ptylewz3/Cycloid_Sport2.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

So i've been really been focusing on render and modeling quality, (I graduate University in a few weeks!) and here's the concept I came up with, I changed the name to "cycloid" and "Cycloid Ontario" for the sedan model.

The hatchback is shorter, and has a few more high-dollar 'on trend' pieces such as a floating or multi colored roof.

The sedan is cheaper.

OK I should really start making racier vehicles, but these are more stock models for the backgrounds of the buildings I make.

Here's a C-segment sedan and C-segment "Chinese" sedan.

One is more racy, the other is focused on ease of manufacturing and comfort.

I don't know what kind of shaders that Lightwave has. Blender is pretty robust in the shader and lighting department, but I don't know a thing about Lightwave.

You do a lot of architectural rendering?

I've been working on FINISHING the cars.

The Cycloid Ontario (B-segment sedan) has a fully-modeled interior now. The radio hasn't been textured yet.

the Trendsetter (A-segment hatchback) also has a fully-modeled interior. Part of the dashboard is textured.

I also started work on this grocery store and car dealership to show off the cars. The dealership will give you the scale of the cars; the city car is a lot shorter than the sedan model!

I'm still trying to push realism

And one of the things I've noticed is that my wheels look like ass. Not design wise, but the tires are just grey cylinders!

So I downloaded this pretty detailed steel wheel and tire. But I don't like using other people's things, so I at least modeled another tire (actually it's a Nexen N'Blue Eco) and used the found steel wheel model as a stand in, for now at least.

Online wheels

My Nexens with the found model steel wheel.

(https://s10.postimg.org/wo4nzrjpl/karti.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

So I learned more and more about displacment maps and bump maps. It's a great way to add detail and realism to parts, without being computationally expensive.

HA. I probably could. My goal was to make real "fake" cars that I could put in the backgrounds of my 3D archviz stuff, but obviously I like cars so they've taken on this stuff.

I used to put these in computer games but not so much these days. BeamNG is hard to write for, and the admin at the site is an asshole. Also, with high LOD, these cars are coming up on 1m+ polygons (triangles, quads it's about 1/2 that)

Anyways here's some other pics I did today

Here's a very old mesh I breathed on and tried to make current. I was modeling this thing and sticking to it wayy back in 2010. It's a very odd looking thing, but I think it could be an electric car or something.

It wouldn't be hard, but it sounds like you'd want more of an animation (which I am bad at) versus a still image.

As an overview, here are all the models I've got.

A-segment (Trendsetter)

Small hatchback sized like a Chevy Spark, near the cheaper end of the segment and would be an option for developing markets like Brazil and India.

(https://s13.postimg.org/4smw6mwrr/eurobeati8.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

(https://s13.postimg.org/k1ctkeb0n/eurobeati9.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

B-segment (Cycloid)

Small cheap hatchback. This is more akin to the Canada/ASEAN Nissan Micra/March; it's small and about the same length, but the car is simpler to make. This is created to be easy to make, good visibility, low price of entry, big back seat.

(https://s13.postimg.org/8z7qm0m3r/eurobeati4.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

B-segment (Cycloid Ontario)

The Sedan version of the above hatchback, this car is designed to also be cheap, but preference is given to rear seat space.

(https://s13.postimg.org/w387ej4tj/eurobeati7.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

B-segment (Kier)

So this is a very old mesh, and I was playing around with it and did a lot of tweaks (basically remodeled the damn car) and created this "Euro" B-segment. This is sort of the EU Micra. More sophisticated, and all those weird styling choices come at a cost; headroom and legroom are down from the Cycloid series.

B- segment (Artigo)

Small CUV. Kind of self explanatory.

(https://s13.postimg.org/9rael5dfb/eurobeati6.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

C-segment (Allegro)

This is directly comparable to a Honda Civic or Mazda 3. It's got a wrap-around rear window, and a sort of athletic stance.

(https://s13.postimg.org/kqvlwt907/C-seg_hatch.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

(https://s13.postimg.org/f2pb5vud3/C-seg_sedan3.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

C-segment (Activa)

This is a "Chinese special". It's a Compact in length car, but the proportions are focused on interior room. You get full-sized car space with compact car $$$.

You could. Thing is, these models are not optimized for that use. With wheels, tires, full interiors, these cars are around 1m polygons.

Just my .02, but for portfolio purposes, I don't think it would hurt to try modeling a couple cars that are heavily stylized and "objectively" beautiful as opposed to these more production-realistic mainstreamers. I also think the exercise might provide you some insight into motifs that would translate well into improving the mundane stuff.

This still fascinates me. In 1990 or so we visited a high-speed place in Salt Lake City that had ginormous computer towers to do computer rendering. They had one they showed us that looked like a photo realistic car in a showroom.

And they had a live balls on a rollercoaster type thing going on. Really amazing compared to everything else around back then. But it would probably look really amateur-ish next to your stuff.

If find your designs interesting and without the intention of critiquing them, I would say that yesterday, attending the local auto show, I sat in a number of different vehicles and what I found that distracted me was when the dash squared up with the door panels on each side.  I found that it was more pleasant to look at when the dash, on each side, curved to flow into the door panel.  Just a little niggling thing that bothered me a bit.

No, it's because this is a cheap car, and making dash and door panels curve into the dash is an expensive thing to do.

It's startling putting new meshes next to old ones.

I've come a long way in regards to surfacing and proportions. The old cars kind of do look like melted candles.

I've also switched from cycles rendering (ray tracing) to blender's new real-time renderer: Eevee. Eevee isn't a ray tracer and it's calculation of lighting isn't quite realistic, but it still looks good and makes up for it by being lighting quick.

Each image in cycles would generally take me 15-20 mins to render.

Eevee? Around 15 seconds.

I also got another paint shader, this one can accurately do paint better - orange peel, metallic flake, and I can finally get colors like yellow and white to render out without looking like total trash.

So, this is wrong.

Since I'm bored and shut in, I've been remodeling old shit. I also want to make a car for the game BeamNG, which means it needs a lot of parts modeled. I also kept saying "Its in scale!" and it was never in scale. When I started actually scaling the cars around wheels, some of my cars were a bit....off. One car was supposed to be "subcompact" but was 10" wider than a current gen Honda Civic.

So here's an old car I remodeled and separated. Its a bit crude in some spaces, but you can see the differences in actual wheel sizes.

So I remodeled this car from back in like 2012.

In theory, this wouldn't be a "new" car. since BeamNG has a lot of cars from different eras, (there's a fake GM FWD A-body) this could potentially the slot of a cheapo Korean hatchback from 2006. Think Chevy Aveo.

When properly scaled, this car is 149.8" long, 58" tall, and 62" wide. It's about an inch shorter than the 2006-2011 Toyota Yaris hatchback, but about an inch wider. Here's a comparison of all the wheels:

This car has also gotten a similar reworking - not sure if I want it in BeamNG tho.

Since BeamNG uses fictional cars from time periods (one of my favorite cars is clearly a GM A-body from the mid 1980's) this car would be from 2005. So I've been crafting a circa 2004+ interior, complete with this (to scale!) single DIN head unit that I modeled after a Saturn SL.

It's bump-mapped - that radio is actually only one polygon. Modeling 3D geometry to look like this would be too hard, so I drew the radio out in 2D, then bump-mapped it to give an illusion of actual 3D geometry.

The radio is actually just this 2D image I made today ^^

One polygon?! Bump mapping is voodoo shit!

I think it may actually be more like 12-18, but it's irrelevant - the DIN cutout is a flat rectangle. I could get away with one singular quad polygon if I really wanted to.

Bump mapping save a LOT of rendering time. If I were to hand model that radio, it would likely be another 1000 polygons.

also I don't think I posted this here: here's all the shit that I like, to scale. Two of them I thought would be "subcompact" are actually small compacts. 164" long for a hatchback is about 3" shorter than a VW Golf. Most subcompact are 4m (157")

Trying to get this car ready for Beam NG. I went from 200K triangles, to 98k. The car has frame rails and an engine, albeit they are parts from the original game that I've altered significantly.

Also, look how weird it looks to it's original I made in 2011. The surfacing on the old car is so....wavy.
