The 1980's 911 looked like a fancy old-school Beetle. With the exception of the Slant-nose Turbo, which looked like a fancy old-school Beetle with 1980's Michael Jackson's nose job and 1980's Arnold Schwarzenegger's steroid enhancements.
The 944 was...okay. I'd put it on the same footing as the 1980's Supra and Trans Am, looks-wise.
Have to go with the T-bird.

Pontiac Fiero was a really good looking car. The looks were a generation ahead of the MR2.
Don't get me wrong, I do love the classic 911. But I wouldn't say it's one of the best looking, even in a decade full of shoeboxes on wheels.

Yes to all these but the GTI. I love the GTI but it's not the best looking of the '80s IMO.
An awful lot of the cars in this thread were actually launched in the 1970s, even though they were still on sale for some part of the 1980s - Porsche 911 Turbo, 928, r107 Merc SL, Jag XJS, E24 6 series, Aston V8 Vantage (goes back to the 60s in original DBS format).
I don't think I've ever seen anyone nominated the Mitsubishi Starion in a beauty contest before, and although I understand the nostalgic reason for selecting it, the "jelly mould" Sierra was just that. Not a pretty car, in the opinion of many people.
Where are all the genuinely good looking nominations? Think Alfa 164, Peugeot 205 and 405, the Calibra............ hmm, it's at this point that I realise that this was not exactly a decade of styling triumphs, was it?

Ah yes...... the aptly named Fuego. Apt, as many of them did live up to their name and spontaneously combust. Shame, as it was a pretty car - though the Americanisation of it looks to be nearly as grim as what was depicted of the Golf to Rabbit transformation earlier in this thread. And the BMW M635CSI, to give it is proper name (it was never called an M6) did not pass the process unscathed either, sadly.

I've never seen a Fuego in person (doesn't sound like they last very long), but they do look cool in pictures.
I know that a few of these came out in 1989 and are a stretch. But hey, that is in the 1980's by the book. And some of them like the MR-2 didn't make it to the US until 1990 but they did have them in 89 in Japan so that's in the 80's. Lot's of cars like the Diablo and Jaguar XJ220 came out in concepts in the late 80's but you couldn't buy them so I won't list those.
I'd add cars like the Lotus Esprit and Countach but they came out before the 80's and just became iconic in the 80's.

There were/are a lot in Argentina, though they were typically in pretty rough shape.

It's funny, but I think the only era's styling that, generally, appeals to me less than the 80s was the 50s. I'm just not a huge fan of the tailfin era. I like the art deco/streamline styling of the 30s and 40s, love the muscle/pony car era styling of the mid 60s - mid 70s, but just never really fell in love with the tailfin cars of the 50s - early 60s. All of that chrome and the extraneous, often outrageous, styling features (like the fins) just seems so gaudy to me. The 80s sort of swung the other way, with many cars being very conservative and boxy and looking like they were penned by someone with a straight edge and some graph paper (thank you computer aided design software).
Also not a fan of the blobby, bulbous, sea mammal styling of many mid to late 90s cars (Taurus and LH cars are prime examples).

I hate bulbous styling on cars. I don't like all the cars of the 1950s -- some are overdone -- but some of them are pretty cool.

i think people are mixing up best car of the 1980s with best looking car of the 1980s.
people look fondly back at the 80s accords because those cars were so well built, especially with all the crap gm and ford put out there. it's the reason why accords are worth so much on the used car market. and camry's, while equally reliable, have no sporting pretensions and were therefore labeled boring unlike the accord.
that model accord is cool looking no doubt, especially for a mainstreamer. those pop-up head lights were awesome. but "best" looking car. better than a saab 900 turbo for example? Even a 1986 mercury sable is a pretty good looking car. made not to last 80 thousand miles, but that's a different thread.

The Class of 1983.
All of them gorgeous. I think the Buick and Oldsmobile look the best, though. :mrcool:

Funny, the people who truly grew up with them (had to see them, drive them, ride in them, etc...) almost universally loathe them.
They might have been POS cars, but to me they look awesome.

I agree!
Not surprising given that buick and oldsmobile are/were more premium than chevrolet/pontiac. My uncle had an oldsmobile delta 98 regency. I loved that car. It was huge and had these super soft plushdark blue velour seats. I could never figure out the difference between buick and oldsmobile.
Have we had a best looking cars from the 90's yet?

No, because the '90s produced nothing but anonymous jellybean-shaped cars that all looked the same.

Saw one yesterday when I was walking around my hometown (getting my mom's car to pick them up from the restaurant we took her to for Mother's Day). It was that light brown/dark champagne color. Nice.
I'm always torn on the whale of a rear spoiler that beautiful porsche has. Do I like it, do I not. Do I like it, do I not. Does it give balance or does it look stupid. On any other car i can think of, that large a spoiler would look so dumb.

Some of the best looking sports cars of all time came out of the 90's. And most 90's family cars look better then the high belt line shit of today.

Not the early-to-mid 90s.

Definitely ducktail! Or even better, DuckTales!
Peugeot 405. You can't beat Pininfarina styling. If only modern Peugeots looked half as good.

Sterling 825/827. Only the British can make a Honda unreliable but damn it looked good!
