Mercedes-Benz A250e And B250e Plug-In Hybrids Are On Deck

Mercedes-Benz has expanded the new generation A- and B-Class lineups with the introduction of the 250e plug-in hybrids.

Available for the hatchback and sedan versions of the A-Class and the B-Class minivan, the powertrain combines a 160 PS (158 hp / 118 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque, 1.3-liter inline-four gasoline engine with a 102 PS (101 hp / 75 kW) and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) electric motor. Total system output is rated at 218 PS (215 hp / 160 kW) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque.

In a first for the brand's car, the electric motor starts the internal combustion engine. It takes its juice from a 15.6 kWh battery, mounted beneath the rear seats, that allows the A-Class hatch and saloon to travel for 60-68 km (37-42 miles) and 61-69 km (38-43 miles), respectively, on a single charge, whereas the compact MPV has a driving range of 56-67 km (35-42 miles), in the WLTP test cycle. Plugging it into a 7.4 kW wallbox will recharge it from 10 to 100 percent in 1 hour and 45 minutes, but it also supports fast charging, with 10-80 percent being achieved in around 25 minutes.

In this spec, the A250e hatchback is the quickest of the three, needing 6.6 seconds for the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint. The sedan is 0.1 seconds slower, which does it in 6.8 seconds. Top speed in the hatchback and people carrier is 235 km/h (146 mph), whereas the sedan tops out at 240 km/h (149 mph). All three can reach 140 km/h (87 mph) in the electric mode.

Additionally, the MBUX infotainment system has been enhanced with the addition of other features and can find nearby charging stations and display the battery level status.

The A250e models are already available to order in Germany, from €36,943.55 ($40,966) and €37,300.55 ($41,362) in the hatchback and saloon, respectively, tax included. The B250e will launch in a few weeks with an MSRP of €37,663.50 ($41,764).

Very interesting.  Hybrids still make the most sense for single vehicle households.

Exhaust outlet is questionable.

That exhaust outlet would not be legal in most US states. It must not exit under the passenger compartment.

The exhaust placement looks rather silly/goofy.

The salesman who I worked with to get my new A250 already drove the A250e. I expressed interest in this car should fuel costs become unaffordable here but to my surprise he said he was not impressed with the A250e. The performance is ok, but because of the extra weight of the batteries and electric motor the car in ICE-mode gets rather poor fuel economy (10-11 L/100 km (23.5/21.3 mpg). In essence I think this car will primarily be sold to businesses as company cars where the "low CO2 emissions" (on paper) offer tax benefits. Also, if its primarily used in EV mode for short city trips it should be ok.

And the last long trip I undertook with my A250 was about 120 km one way in 35-degree C heat, 30% Autobahn, 70% state roads with moderate stop-and-go traffc and the A/C on medium output (blower setting 4 out of 7) and I still got 6.3 L / 100 km, which 37.3 mpg. I don't need an A250e if its gets such bad mileage.  :tounge:

2020 Mercedes-Benz A250e Plugs Into The Heart Of The Compact Segment

By combining a small 1.3-liter four-banger, co-developed with Renault-Nissan, with an electric motor and a battery pack, Mercedes-Benz has created a plug-in hybrid version of the new-gen A-Class.

Nothing to get your heart racing so far, but the powertrain delivers a total output of 218 PS (215 hp / 160 kW) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque. That's almost hot hatch territory, with the Volkswagen Golf GTI boasting a 245 PS (242 hp / 180 kW) 2.0-liter TSI.

The A250e, which is its official name, is only 0.3 seconds slower to 100 km/h (62 mph) than the GTI  needing 6.6 seconds. Give it enough space and it will max out at 235 km/h (146 mph) using both the ICE and electric motor, or 140 km/h (87 mph) in near complete silence.

What is basically a hot hatch disguised as an environmentally friendly car has a total driving range of 68 km (42 miles), in the WLTP test cycle, with the 15.6 kWh battery fully charged.

On a good day and given you use the electric moto, Benz claims that it will burn only 1.5 l/100 km (156.8 mpg US / 188 mpg UK) and emit 34 g/km of CO2. The combined electrical consumption is 15 kWh/100 km. The equivalent Sedan and B-Class in the same spec return 1.4 and 1.6 l/100 km (168-147 mpg US / 201.8-176.6 mpg UK), respectively.

Aside from the addition of the plug port on the right C pillar and A250e badge on the tailgate, the model blends in with the rest of the family. The carmaker has also updated the MBUX infotainment system, giving it new functions, like the ability to search for nearby charging stations.

The A250e is celebrating its public premiere these days at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, and we've got some live pictures with the displayed example in our Gallery below.
