Audi Reveals Updated 2020 A5 Family, Including Diesel-Only S5 For Europe

Audi has revealed the facelifted 2020 A5 model family, which includes the Coupe, the Cabriolet and the four-door Sportback bodystyles, together with the also refreshed S5 models.

As expected, the facelift focuses on the same areas with the 2020 A4, including a revised Singleframe front grille that now sits flatter and a bit wider and features ventilation slits to remind you of the iconic Audi Sport Quattro.

The bumper is also redesigned with larger air intakes and a new lower blade while the lights front and rear received a new signature. The rear end gets a new diffuser insert backed from a set of trapezoidal taillpipes, making the back of the car look wider.

All models will come with LED headlights as standard, with Audi offering Matrix LED headlights and LED rear lights with dynamic turn signals as an option.

The highlight in the cabin is the new 10.1-inch MMI system which is based on the company's faster, third-generation infotainment platform and features a clearer menu structure, free text input and natural-language voice control. The system also comes with a multitude of connected services while customers can add features to it even after purchasing the car; these include the MMI Navigation Plus, DAB+ digital radio and the Audi smartphone interface.

During the initial phase of its launch, the facelifted 2020 A5 will be offered with four engine options, all of them fitted with a mild hybrid 48-volt system and an automatic transmission. The entry-level 35 TDI diesel models are powered by a 2.0-liter TDI with 161 HP while the base petrol 40 TFSI make use of the 2.0-liter TFSI with 187 HP.

As with the S4, S6 and S7 models, Audi chose to ditch the petrol V6 engine in the S5 models destined for European customers. The new 2020 Audi S5 TDI is powered by a 3.0-liter TDI unit that makes 342 HP (347 PS) and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of peak torque and is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Audi claims a 0-62mph (100km/h) in less than five seconds and an electronically limited 155mph (250km/h) top speed.

Audi will continue to offer the 2020 S5 with the petrol 3.0-liter TFSI V6 engine in markets outside Europe. The figures in this instance are 348 HP (354 PS) and 368 lb-ft (500 Nm) of peak torque. The petrol S5 is capable of a 0-62mph (100km/h) in 4.7 seconds.

Audi will kick off the launch of the updated A5 lineup with a special Edition One trim, which will offer a sport suspension, an S-Line body kit with additional black detailing and special paint finishes.

Customers will be able to order the new 2020 A5 from this fall, with the first deliveries scheduled to start in early 2020. Pricing in Germany starts from 42,900 euros for the A5 Coupe 40 TFSI, which the S5 starts from 66,500 euros.

Wow, uglier in and out. It's time for the auto industry to do better at integrating screens. Mercedes has been showing the way for over a decade since the W221

Those pictures don't look good.

It may or may not look good "in the flesh." I feel like a lot of cars nowadays look a lot better in person than they do in these weird press photos.

The A5 sportback looks much better in person than any photos I've seen, so that's fair. I sincerely doubt that laptop screen erecting out of the dash looks better though.

I saw a new A6 yesterday though and was not impressed. Overall Audi has been in a design rut for quite some time.

Why the hell would they release promo pictures of a black interior?
