This weekend I saw two Jetta's on the road, the first I've seen outside the net. I will say that I was much more impressed than I was when I saw the first pics. It doesn't look as long in real life. It's not tremendous or anything but certainly not as disappointing as I thought. It will definately need some clear mask over that grill chrome though.
Yeah, I've seen a few of those, and theire good-looking, but theres something about it that should be changed, yet I cant put my finger on it... And have you noticed this?

They are very popular here in Montreal. I see several per day just commuting to/from work. I think they look great in person, though they are rather large. I think they are about the same size as my A4 now (maybe this is a good thing for Jetta buyers though).
rear over hang is ghastly...
I guess they look okay, but my real problem with them is their high price and poor performance.
I agree that they look much better in person than in pictures. When the diesel and turbo models are released, I'll take a more serious look.
I don't mind them. They're just too expensive. Unless VW is planning to slot a new model below the Jetta, they're moving too far upmarket with this car.

Approximately everyone has noticed and mentioned that. ;)
As to the car, it seems nice enough, like a Corolla but a tad more refined and sportier. But at the prices that they're asking, anyone who looks at what other vehicles can be had for the same price will probably end up in another vehicle.
Seriously, who here would chose the Jetta over the TSX, A4, or 9-3? A Mazda3 or a Corolla are similar cars for much less.

I don't know about sportier. The previous version was certainly sportier than a Corolla, but I'm not sure that's still true.

The Jetta has better steering feedback, but that's about it.

That very much sums it up. VW should have priced it a lot more competitively.
Yeah, the price is not competitive at all. :(
price is also ghastly...
I am not thrilled by the current version, but when the GLI is released I would expect that I could choose it over a TSX, 9-2X, or a few others (like the Accord, Camary, Etc...). I would take a 9-3 or A4 over a Jetta, but then they are priced higher when similarly equipped. I would probably take a loaded Jetta GLI over a totally stripped A4 Frontrak with no options for now that I think about it though.

Disgrace might be a little harsh, but I agree it takes away the point of buying an Audi. At that point you may as well get the Passat and save your money.

In the mind of someone who thinks that front-wheel-drive is inherently bad in all ways and should be phased out of all vehicles ASAP, with cost not an object, yes.

I'm starting to see a few of them around. The local dealer has about 15 on the lot. That's just a guess as seen from the freeway.
I acutally saw one on the shoulder of the freeway with a flat about the week after they first came to dealers. :P
The only thing really keeping me from liking the car is the price( ).
for the price of a 200hp GLI, you could get a saab 9-3 or acura TSX, and others, cars with much better prestige than the vw.
Quotefor the price of a 200hp GLI, you could get a saab 9-3 or acura TSX, and others, cars with much better prestige than the vw.
I haven't seen pricing on the GLI yet, but assuming its a couple k more than the GLS, I am guessing that you could indeed probably swing a TSX for the same money/feature content.
However, if you got a 9-3 it would not match the feature content of the GLI, nor would it have the high output engine.
Now the GLI vs TSX is a good comparison. Its not like the TSX is built from better materials, nor does it offer a better drivetrain. Unless you consider Acura to be a much better brand as far as prestige I think the two cars will make good competitors.

I've seen a couple in person and they do look a little better in the flesh than in photos. They also look a bit less Corolla-ish in person. I still think the outgoing car is much better looking, though.

That pretty much goes without saying. But the VW might be a more solid car. I drove a TSX, and I felt vibrations in the car, which did not feel too good.

No. The whole car felt like it was vibrating slightly, somehow akin to what you'd feel in a school bus, I guess, just not that bad.

That's not cool. So the road wasn't choppy? Where you attempting to drive a manual for the first time or something? Was this off of a lot (as in brand-new)? Because sometimes cars will be a little rough until you break them in. How was the rest of the driving experience, especially handling?

vibrations as in road feedback?
Automatic TSX with about 5K miles on it.
I didnt get to wring it out, and handling was fine, the car had a lot of oomph that suprised me coming from a 4 cylinder, and there was some torque steer. It was on a little choppy road, but not with a lot of potholes. It was a slight vibration, and dont think the whole car was vibrating. When I saw vibration I mean the car wasnt perfectly at rest...you always you could feel a little humming vibration throughout the car.
