Looks sharp, I wonder if that would be able to compete in the SV650 race class?
Kind of bummed it's a parallel twin though, the 750cc v-twin they used in their Shiver was always a great sounding engine

Damn now this is what I'm talking about

https://www.motorcycle.com/mini-features/oh-damn-rs-660-aprilia-twin-concept.html

Still not fucking with the middle weight GOAT (any Triumph with the 675 or 765) but very interesting nonetheless

I'd love to ride a race prepped SV650 one day. ~90HP + ~350 or so lbs sounds fun.

Wonder if it's a 180 or 270 twin?

If it's a 270 twin like the FZ-07 it will sound just like a V-twin. No word yet.

Still riding in UT, 50 and sunny in the SLC so I took a lunch ride. Last year I made it to Thanksgiving weekend before having to park them for the winter, we'll see if I can beat that for this year.

The mileage tally for 2018 (so far) is:

  • Triumph: 3600 miles
  • VStrom: 5900 miles
  • Kizashi: 6100 miles

Speed_Racer

Riding season ended the weekend of Thanksgiving again due to some snow. That means it's time to start ordering parts for winter maintenance and upgrades.
Triumph is close to 24k so time for a major interval service - valves, fluids, and stuff. VStrom: Going to do a throttle body sync and replace the TPS that seems to be failing, new rear tire, flush some fluids. But I've decided to sell and upgrade in the spring so mainly getting it ready to list early next year.

Same!

Need to replace the stator. Maybe I'll take it in to get the valves checked too.

Here's the current shortlist to replace the V-Strom. I have to go try them on for size w/ the GF since she rides 2-up w/ me about 30% of the time. Aiming to spend $7-8k, but not planning to buy until late spring

For real, it's a tough one. Can't wait to take them out for test rides in the spring.

Can you get either of them within your budget?

Yes, but they'll all be a few years pre-owned.

Out of curiosity, which would be the best for 2-up?  Or do you have them ranked in order for 2-up?

Speed_Racer

They aren't ranked at the moment for 2-upping, just the four whose reviews point to them being very comfortable/capable for carrying passengers while also being in my price range. But sometimes good reviews don't equal a good experience on the bike.

If it were just me riding, I'd consider the 650 versions of the Vstrom & Versys. But the bigger engines really make 2-up touring effortless (comparing long rides on my SV650 to my current Vstrom 1000)

MX793

I'm partial to the Versys (closely related to my Ninja).  My dad got a gig at a motorcycle dealership (post retirement gig for something to do) and when taking customers on test rides, the Versys ended up being one of his go-to bikes.  He's thinking of buying one to replace his Spyder and get back to proper 2-wheel sport touring.

That's the one I"m most interested in test-riding. It sounds like it has a real peach of an engine.

I wish!
Though a local dealer does have a brand new VStrom marked down from $12,999 MSRP down to $9,999. Still above what I want to pay though even with the big discount

Eye of the Tiger

I had a dream last night that Suzuki was selling both the VStrom, and another model called the VTron. The main difference was that the VTron had the engine in front of the front wheel. There was also a substantial discount, and the salesman pretty much said VTron was my only option. So I bought it.

It was a dream. They never make sense. By the end, it had somehow transformed into a bicycle with a little weed wacker motor on it. Sense is never made.

Hang the engine off the forks/triple-tree and make it FWD and it could work.  Weight distribution would be whack.

I do recall an R1 that was converted to 2WD

http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/2009/08/article/yamaha-r1-ohlins-2wd-review/

For me the issue is I think for street-useful power levels either using one's brain or a decent TC is enough. And for a 200HP+ track beast keeping the front tire on the ground is enough of an issue.

Man I miss Motorcycle-USA and Ash On Bikes.

But if the engine was out in front of the front axle and the bike is FWD, wheelies would be impossible.  Stoppies would be a lot easier, though.

An effective, high performance 2WD setup was kind of the Grail for off road guys.  Rokons have been around for ages, but they're bog slow and don't really have a suspension, so you don't really want to go all that fast on rough terrain anyway.

Trying to make sense out of my stupid dream ...

Somewhere in the back of my subconscious, yes, I want a FWD motorcycle. Also, I was being railroaded by the salesman when he told me that all I could afford was the FWD VTron, when I really wanted the RWD VStrom. But it's not that I didn't also want the VTron. However, once the deal was done and I was riding the VTron home, it turned into a bicycle with a weed wacker motor that made awful noises. This somewhat parallels my experience buying the Nissan Versa, although I initially set out to buy a cheap base model without any input from the salesman. In the end, I was very disappointed when the engine started knocking at around 1200 miles.

I appreciate it for its speed, but IMO it sure was ugly.
I'm sure the Hayabusa will return (see the reborn Katana). I don't think they'd let superbikes like the H2/S1000RR/Paningale V4R go unchallenged.
