Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe And Cabriolet To Be Dropped To Save Costs

The next-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class is just around the corner but it appears unlikely that the coupe and cabriolet variants will stick around.

In the midst of Daimler's massive cost-cutting plan that will see it slash no fewer than 15,000 jobs, German publication Handelsblatt reports that a decision has been made to not renew the S-Class Coupe and S-Class Cabriolet for the car's latest generation.

This comes despite the fact that the current two-door S-Class variants are based on the same architecture as the sedan, as opposed to using a bespoke platform that would make them significantly more costly to produce.

Mercedes-Benz's decision to abandon the S-Class Coupe and S-Class Cabriolet doesn't come as a huge surprise as the sedan model massively outsells both of them.

It's not just the S-Class Coupe and S-Class Cabriolet that are thought to be on the chopping block. Handelsblatt asserts that the X-Class will indeed be axed, as has been reported in recent months. In addition, the third-generation CLS and the current AMG GT Four-Door may both be killed off at the end of their respective lifecycles and replaced by a single electric model.

While it's sad to see the S-Class Coupe and S-Class Cabriolet go the way of the dodo, there will be a new S-Class-sized model to hit the market in the form of the long-awaited all-electric EQS sedan. It will sit at the top of the electric-only EQ brand from Mercedes-Benz and is expected to arrive sometime around 2021.

German report says key Mercedes models will be killed off as Daimler sheds 15,000 more jobs

A German newspaper has reported that Daimler is targeting another 15,000 jobs and will axe some low-yielding models as new-ish boss Ola Kallenius deals with the spending excesses of his predecessors.

The Handelsblatt newspaper reported that the parent company of Mercedes-Benz would cut significantly more jobs than it announced in December.

It will also slash under-performing models, like the Coupe and Convertible versions of the flagship S-Class along with the already-axed X-Class.
The versatile B-Class is also on the chopping block.

At the same time, Daimler will reportedly introduce 32 new models by 2022, starting with a facelifted E-Class and also including redesigned C-Class, S-Class and SL-Class models, and the new AMG GT Black Series,
EQA, EQE and EQS.

Daimler had targeted about €1.4 billion in annual staff savings by the end of 2022 in its November announcement, but Handlesblatt insists the cuts will go deeper than even that shock decision.

It will also slash investments in non-core businesses and on money-losing projects, the paper said.
