Mercedes-Benz Gives 2021 E-Class A Face And Tail Lift Along With New Straight-Six

After the coronavirus outbreak got the best of the 2020 Geneva Motor Show, automakers took to the web to present their world premieres. For Mercedes-Benz, this includes the refreshed E-Class family, which follow tradition by getting a subtle makeover and all the latest tech systems.

New Face And CLS-Inspired Taillights

In the design department, Benz played it safe, subtly tweaking an already well-received recipe.

So what's new about the latest executive model from Stuttgart? Well, it packs redesigned headlights, new front bumper and a wider grille, though you'll have to head to the back to really tell a difference as Mercedes swapped the compact triangular lights for slimmer horizontal units inspired by the CLS on the sedan, with new trim joining them together and different rear bumper. Three new paint colors and an expanded wheel range complete the styling updates.

MBUX Infotainment And 'PowerNap' Program

Inside, the 2021 E-Class gains the latest generation MBUX infotainment system and a revised digital instrument panel graphics. It's offered with two 10.25-inch screens as standard or two 12.3-inch displays as an option. Both of them can be used to access a wide variety of functions, are highly customizable and can be controlled by using the touchscreen, new touchpad on the center console, voice control or hand gestures.

Other clever features include the 'energizing seat kinetics' that change the seat posture by movements for more comfortable journeys, alongside the 'energizing comfort control' with musical and lighting moods and massage modes. There's also a 'PowerNap' program available in the PHEV models, with three phases – falling asleep, sleeping and waking, which comes in handy when users take a break from driving at a rest area or when they charge the battery en route.

The steering wheel design is also new and comes with a two-zone control area and can be had in three versions: all-leather, wood-leather or the flat-bottom 'supersport'. The seats, door cards and other touchable surfaces in the cabin can be had in different materials such as Artico, Nappa leather with diamond quilting and others.

Safety Gear

There's a wide range of driver aids available, including Active Brake Assist, Active Speed Limit Assist, Active Distance Assist Distronic, Active Steering Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Parking Assist with Parktronic and 360-degree camera, and Active Stop-and-Go Assist.

Seven Different Plug-in Hybrid Models And New Inline-Six

The facelifted E-Class takes another step into an electrified future with no less than 7 different plug-in hybrid powertrain configurations, offered in the Saloon and Estate, with rear- and all-wheel drive and petrol or diesel engines. In Europe, the gasoline range has outputs that vary between 156-367 PS (154-362 HP / 115-270 kW) and the diesel lineup from 160-330 PS (158-326 HP / 118-243 kW).

Joining the electrified lineup is the M254 four-cylinder gasoline unit with new integrated starter-generator (ISG) that makes an extra 20 PS (20 HP / 15 kW) and 180 Nm (133 lb-ft) of torque. Cars packing this propulsion system will also get a 48-volt on-board electrical system, as well as energy recovery and the ability to 'glide' with the ICE turned off.

Mercedes-Benz has launched the M256 3.0-liter inline-six gasoline engine in the E-Class for the first time, which features an ISG as well. Completing the engine lineup is the OM656 six-cylinder diesel, which gets an expanded emission control system, like the OM654 four-pot. The 9-speed transmission has been optimized for the second-gen ISG.

Following the online presentation, the 2021 E-Class will launch in the second half of the year. The first examples will arrive at dealers in Europe starting this summer, followed by the China-only long wheelbase variant of the four-door. The Coupe and Cabriolet will also launch later this year.

What about the North American version?

The U.S. will get the E350 with a 255 hp 2.0-liter turbo in both RWD and 4Matic AWD versions, the E350e PHEV with a 315 hp 2.0-liter turbo and an electric motor, and the E450 4Matic with the new 362 hp 3.0-liter straight-six turbo with EQ boost, alongside the AMG E53 with a 429 hp 3.0-liter inline-six with an electric auxiliary compressor. Sales of the sedan models will start in late 2020.

The Urban Guard System For All Benz Models

On a related note, Mercedes has announced the introduction of the Urban Guard, a comprehensive category of products and options for the entire range, which protects against vandalism and crime.

Set to launch in mid-2020, the Urban Guard Vehicle Protection and Urban Guard Vehicle Protection Plus provide all-round monitoring of the parked vehicle and comprise of the anti-theft alarm system, tow-away protection, interior monitoring and a bunch of sensors. GPS tracking is also included, thus pinpointing the location of the potentially stolen car and making the recovery, which takes place in cooperation with the police, possible.

What About The Estate?

The Estate or Wagon, as it's called in other markets, receives the same facelift, but it won't be coming to America – for now. A U.S. spokesperson told CarScoops that, "At this time, the U.S. will introduce the E-Class All-Terrain to replace the series E-Class Wagon. Stay tuned for more news on the E-Class Wagon in the coming months."

Mercedes Refreshes 2021 E-Class All Terrain Wagon And It's Bringing It To America

We could start by rounding up the changes on the 2021 E-Class All-Terrain, but the headline news with Mercedes-Benz's refreshed rugged estate is that it's going to be offered in North America for the very first time. For the time being at least, Mercedes said that the All-Terrain will replace the E-Class Wagon in North America, though we're told to wait for more news in the coming months.

Joining the facelifted E-Class sedan and AMG E53 models, it will go up against the the likes of the Audi A6 Allroad that was recently announced for America with a $65,900 price tag, and Volvo's existing V90 Cross Country.

For the new model year, it adopts the styling cues of the lower-riding E-Class Wagon, boasting identical lighting units on both ends, with incorporated LED DRLs, and power domes on the bonnet, like the Avantgarde and AMG Line trim levels. A revised radiator grille, as well as the restyled skid plate with mirror chrome look instead of the silver shadow hue of its predecessor, are part of the updates.

Elsewhere, the facelifted E-Class All-Terrain soldiers on with the same look that includes the shape of the front and rear bumpers, chrome trim, roof rails, tailgate-mounted spoiler and plastic cladding on the lower parts of the body. The jacked-up ground clearance and standard 4Matic all-wheel drive system are still on deck, allowing it to venture off the beaten path every now and then.

Inside, it gets the latest iteration of the MBUX infotainment system, new steering wheel and touchpad on the center console, in addition to a generous range of trim and upholstery options and combos.

The U.S. specification car will come with a 12.3" Digital Instrument Cluster & 12.3" Touchscreen Multimedia Display, LED lights, DYNAMIC SELECT with Offroad and Offroad+ driving modes, 19-inch wheels, and a host of other features as standard.

What about powertrains?

The U.S. market will get a sole option, the E450 4Matic All-Terrain powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with EQ Boost producing 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of peak torque. The EQ Boost 48-volt mild-hybrid system provides an additional 21 hp and up to 184 lb-ft worth of electric power in certain circumstances.

The German automaker did not provide further details about the 2021 E-Class All-Terrain, although they did say that the high-riding station wagon will be offered with more off-road modes and additional engine versions. As a result, we will have to wait until later this year, when the facelifted E-Class goes on sale, to find out more about it. In the meantime, you can check it out in our image gallery shared below.

Facelifted 2021 Mercedes-AMG E53 Finally Brings A Drift Mode

The 2021 Mercedes-AMG E53 has been unveiled in both sedan and Wagon bodystyles alongside the latest facelifted E-Class and E-Class All-Terrain. Unlike the All-Terrain, the E53 Wagon will not be coming Stateside – for now at least as Mercedes told us to stay tuned for more news later in the year .

Slotting under the E63, which has yet to be uncovered in its latest form, the E53 soldiers on with the same 48v mild-hybrid powertrain as the outgoing model, which replaced the old E43 two years ago.

Tell Me About Power And Specs

Power comes from a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six engine, which develops 435 PS (429 HP / 320 kW) and 520 Nm (384 lb-ft) of torque. The EQ Boost starter-alternator adds an extra 22 PS (21 HP / 16 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of electric power under certain circumstances, bringing the numbers temporarily up to 457 PS (451 HP / 336 kW) and 770 Nm (568 lb-ft). The powertrain comes paired to a 9-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, and 4Matic+ AWD system with rear-wheel drive capability.

The 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) is dispatched in 4.5 seconds in the Saloon and 4.6 seconds in the Estate, while top speed is electronically capped at 250 km/h (155 mph), but can be lifted to 270 km/h (168 mph) with the optional AMG Driver's Package.

In the overly optimistic NEDC test cycle, the E53 Saloon returns between 8.8 and 8.5 l/100 km (equal to 32.1-33.2 mpg UK / 26.7-27.7 mpg US) and the E53 Estate from 9 to 8.7 l/100 km (31.4-32.5 mpg UK / 26.1-27 mpg US). EPA consumption figures have not yet been released.

Drivers can choose between Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual driving modes, and have three settings for the Electronic Stability Program (ESP): Basic, Advanced and Pro.

Suspension, Brakes And Drift Mode

Stopping power is provided by 370×36 mm front cross-drilled and vented discs with four-piston calipers, and 360×26 mm vented discs with single-piston calipers. The 2021 E53 features the AMG Ride Control+ air suspension developed by AMG, with sporty spring/damper set-up and continuously adjustable damping. The latter can be preselected in the Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes, enhancing either long-distance cruising or track driving.

Previously reserved for the eight-cylinder models, the AMG Dynamic Plus Package has now been launched for the E53, too. The highlight includes the Race drive program with Drift Mode, which allows those sitting behind the wheel to keep the car sideways for as long as they want. Other features included here are the red brake calipers and Dinamica AMG Performance steering wheel that can be wrapped in Dinamica microfiber or leather and adds buttons for controlling the drive programs and additional settings for the driving dynamics.

Exterior And Interior Revisions

The 2021 E53 follows in the footsteps of the facelifted E-Class lineup with the same visual updates including revised lights on both ends and grille, while boasting a model-specific sporty body kit. The biggest change on the outside is the addition of the Panamericana grille with vertical slats.

Compared to its predecessor, the new iteration has restyled front and rear bumpers, a thin boot lid spoiler, more muscular diffuser with incorporated quad exhaust pipes and bonnet with two distinctive power domes, also found on the regular Avantgarde and AMG Line grades.

Selecting the optional AMG Night Package will get you the front splitter, mirror caps, disc frame, rear apron trim strip, tailpipe elements and others in high-loss black. The grille is available with a darkened look for an additional cost.

Three new metallic colors, the Graphite Grey, Mojave Silver and High-Tech Silver, have been added to the palette. The car rides on 19-inch alloy wheels with a 5-twin-spoke design, and can be ordered with the 20-inch set.

Like the 2021 non-AMG E-Class models, and other modern Mercedes vehicles, the E53 has the MBUX infotainment system, with customizable instrument cluster. It also gets sports seats in black Artico/Dinamica microfiber with the specific design, red contrast stitching and AMG badge. The AMG Performance Seat Packages are available as an option, alongside the red seatbelts and other trim elements. The steering wheel has a new design can comes wrapped in leather/microfiber or Dinamica microfiber.

The facelifted E53 will launch in the USA as a sedan towards the end of the year.

I really really really like the E-class. I want to own one someday. I've been thinking about trading the 1M for something more practical. But realistically I'd get a lightly used one for a 40% discount.

These really look good.  Probably the best of the German 3 luxury brands right now.

GoCougs

Best looking E-class in like forever. I can't stand the interiors though.

E class doesn't look like a E class to me without four headlights.

It's impossible to argue with Raza. He wins. Period. End of discussion.

The sedan does look good.  Not spectacular, but nothing that offends the eye.  Nice proportions, an almost cut from billet look, great looking wheels.

So nice to have an inline-six: smooth-as-silk and refined.
